Yesterday, Meta’s Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, made an announcement that could redefine how we use Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. If you’ve ever felt like social media policies were too restrictive or overly complicated, this might be good news for you.

Meta is rolling out major policy changes aimed at restoring free expression and making your experience on these platforms simpler and more open.

Wondering what this means for you? Let’s break it down.

Saying Goodbye to Fact-Checkers

Meta has decided to get rid of the third-party fact-checkers that have been tagging posts they believe are false or misleading. The idea was to help users avoid misinformation, but there were complaints of bias. To solve that, Meta is embracing the Community Notes model.

With Community Notes, users can leave notes on posts to provide more context or challenge claims instead of having external fact-checkers decide what’s true. It will require agreement between people with a range of perspectives to help prevent biased ratings. This is a community-driven approach that lets everyone get involved in ensuring the accuracy of the information we consume.

Simplifying Content Rules

You’ve probably noticed that the rules around what you can or can’t post have been pretty strict—especially on sensitive topics like gender and politics. Well, that’s changing.

Meta’s new approach is all about simplifying those rules and giving you more room to express your thoughts and experiences. The goal is to encourage open discussions without stifling people with overly complicated rules.

Fewer Mistakes in Content Moderation

There have been concerns about Meta’s automated system taking down posts that shouldn’t have been flagged or did not violate Meta’s rules, and according to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta has been “over-enforcing rules, limiting legitimate political debate and censoring too much trivial content and subjecting too many people to frustrating enforcement actions.”

Now, Meta is adjusting how they moderate content. Instead of using filters to flag everything that could possibly violate a policy, Meta will now focus on illegal and high-severity violations. For anything less serious, it’ll be up to users to report issues. This change aims to reduce mistakes, meaning fewer posts will get wrongly flagged.

Bringing Back Political and Civic Content

A while ago, Meta decided to cut back on recommending political content because people found it stressful. But now, many users are asking for more political and civic discussions. So, Meta is bringing back civic content to Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, while working to keep things respectful and friendly.

If you missed the opportunity to engage in political debates or discuss important social issues, or wish to see more political content in your feeds, now you can.

Moving Content Moderation Teams

Meta is also moving its content moderation teams from California to Texas. Why? This move is aimed at reducing concerns about any political bias that might come from having teams based in California. The idea is to help make the moderation process feel more neutral and trustworthy for users everywhere.

Fighting Against Global Censorship

Another important part of this shift is Meta’s stance on global censorship. Many governments around the world are pushing for more censorship of online content. Some countries are even passing laws that make it harder for platforms to allow free speech.

Meta is working with the U.S. government to push back against these laws and defend free speech around the world. The goal is to ensure that social media remains a place where people can share their thoughts without worrying about government censorship.

What Does This Mean for You?

It means more freedom to express yourself online.

  • You’ll see less content being removed: Meta’s new approach means fewer harmless posts will be taken down.
  • You’ll be able to help check the facts: With Community Notes, users can play a bigger role in making sure the information shared is accurate.
  • You’ll see more political and civic discussions: Meta is bringing back these discussions, so you’ll be able to engage in these topics without restrictions.

Confidence in Mahama’s Leadership for Positive Change

Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed optimism about John Dramani Mahama’s leadership and its potential to bring positive change for Ghana.

“I am confident that the new government, under your leadership, will work with Nigeria to strengthen this powerful bond, leading to greater shared prosperity for our people. I have no doubt that your administration will bring about positive change and progress.”

Unity is the Foundation for Progress

John Dramani Mahama made a heartfelt appeal for national unity, urging Ghanaians to come together for the greater good.

“The time has come for us to heal the wounds of division. It is time to rebuild the trust that binds us together as one people. We are stronger together, and it is only through unity that we can overcome the challenges ahead.”

Reviving Ghana’s Economy is a Top Priority

Acknowledging the economic difficulties faced by the nation, John Dramani Mahama reassured citizens of his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the economy.

“Our economy has faced significant challenges, but I stand here today with a promise to every Ghanaian: we will build a resilient economy, one that works for all. We will implement policies that leave no one behind, creating an environment where businesses thrive and opportunities abound.”

Empowering the Youth Through Education and Jobs

The president placed a strong focus on the youth, recognising their importance in shaping Ghana’s future.

“Our young people are the backbone of this nation. Their energy, creativity, and passion inspire hope for a brighter tomorrow. My administration will prioritise investments in education and skills training, and we will create jobs that match the aspirations of our young population. We cannot afford to fail them.”

A Focus on Sustainability for Future Generations

The president also emphasised the importance of environmental sustainability, committing to policies that protect natural resources for generations to come.

“As stewards of this beautiful land, we have a duty to care for our natural resources. Our rivers, forests, and air are gifts that we must preserve for future generations. My administration will make sustainability a guiding principle in every decision we take because our future depends on it.”

Promoting Accountability Through Transparency

John Dramani Mahama highlighted the importance of accountability, promising a transparent government that prioritises the people.

“Accountability will be the hallmark of my administration. The resources of this nation belong to the people, and we will ensure that they are used for their benefit. Every cedi will be accounted for, and we will leave no room for corruption to thrive.”

FG Activates Surveillance Amid Rising HMPV Cases in China—What You Need to Know https://www.bellanaija.com/2025/01/human-metapneumovirus-explained/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 09:39:34 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1690396 Dr John Oladejo of the NCDC has confirmed the Federal Government’s proactive measures against the respiratory virus Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) including quarantine for travellers from China.

The Federal Government has announced plans to implement surveillance measures for inbound passengers from China, following reports of a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus raising global attention almost five years after the first news of COVID-19.

Dr John Oladejo of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed the government’s proactive stance, stating: “The Federal Government will activate surveillance measures, like quarantine, for passengers coming in from China.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the World Health Organisation (WHO) noted: “There has been a recent rise in acute respiratory infections, but the overall scale and intensity of respiratory diseases in China this year are lower than last year.”

While Chinese health officials have not officially linked the surge in respiratory infections to HMPV, the virus has been highlighted as a growing concern globally. In the United States, cases of HMPV have steadily risen since November 2024, with 1.94% of weekly tests returning positive as of late December, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

For most people, HMPV causes cold-like symptoms, but in rare cases, it can lead to severe respiratory conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in high-risk groups. Unlike COVID-19, there is no antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, though experts stress it is unlikely to spark a global pandemic.

Key Differences Between HMPV and COVID-19

Both HMPV and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory illnesses with similar symptoms, including coughing, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. However, HMPV is seasonal, typically appearing in winter and spring, whereas COVID-19 has shown year-round transmission due to emerging variants.

Additionally, while COVID-19 has vaccines and antiviral therapies, HMPV is managed through preventive hygiene and supportive care.

Symptoms of HMPV

HMPV symptoms are often mild but can escalate in vulnerable groups. Common symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomitting

In severe cases, HMPV can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in infants, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Who Is at Risk?

Although anyone can contract HMPV, the following groups are at higher risk of severe outcomes:

  • Infants and children under five
  • Adults over 65
  • Individuals with weakend immune systems (e.g., due to cancer, HIV, or organ transplants)
  • People with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma or COPD
How HMPV Spreads

HMPV spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. You can become exposed by:

  • Touching your mouth, nose, or eyes after contact with infected surfaces
  • Inhaling droplets from sneezes or coughs
  • Close physical contact, such as handshakes

In today’s interview, we sit down with Abisola Olutokun, a talented Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker, shaking up the world of storytelling with her unique perspective.

From her early days as a child actor to becoming a director, Abisola is carving a niche for herself in the competitive world of filmmaking. Known for her recent production The Fadugbas, she shares insights into her journey, her challenges as a diasporic filmmaker, and what keeps her going.

1. What drew you to filmmaking?
I have always regarded myself as a storyteller. I have always loved telling stories, whether it’s through blogging, writing, or speaking. Before filmmaking, I authored three amazing books that bordered on migration, family, newlyweds, and childbearing. I discovered filmmaking as another avenue to tell transformative stories, it’s a different medium, but it has the power to touch people in a unique way.

2. Tell us about The Fadugbas, what inspired it?
Having first-hand experience as an immigrant, I have been able to witness the struggles that many immigrant couples go through, especially when adjusting to life abroad. The Fadugbas was born from my desire to educate, to help maintain peace and love in relationships, but in an engaging and relatable way.

Being in Canada for over seven years, I’ve seen marriages break down due to cultural shifts and the strain of adapting to new surroundings. I wanted to explore how couples can work through those challenges and address them before they result in a breakup.

3. Before The Fadugbas, did you have a film background?
“Oh yes! I started off as a child actor at the age of 10, featuring in my first film. After that, I continued acting in church plays before moving up to lead Covenant University’s Theatre Group as their Director. I also had a similar position during Youth service at the National Christian Corpers’ Fellowship (NCCF).

Later, I honed my skills by taking acting classes at Radiance Toronto. Interestingly, the inspiration for my first book came while attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), I was part of the Filmstars project in Toronto. My first short film, Japa Wahala, came out in 2023 and that was an incredible learning experience.

4. What do you think makes a good movie?
A good movie is driven by a strong and relatable story. It all comes down to the narrative. But, it’s also about the right cast and crew that understand the vision of the story and are committed to delivering accurately.

You can have the perfect story, but without the right actors to bring it to life, it might not convey the emotions and depth that the story deserves.

5. What are some challenges you faced producing The Fadugbas?
As a new filmmaker, I faced quite a few challenges. I had to wear my hat as a project manager to navigate one of the biggest hurdles in the production which included managing the different phases of the projects, logistics and resources, cast and crew scattered across different locations while trying to maintain the authenticity of the story. Budgeting is always a challenge, especially for independent filmmakers, and getting the right team together for a project is not always easy but perseverance and passion helped me push through.

6. What sort of movies would you like to work on but haven’t had the opportunity yet?
There are many genres I would love to explore. I’m particularly interested in historical dramas and documentaries that explore African heritage, as well as films that tackle social issues like immigration, love and family.

7. What inspires you as a person?
My main source of inspiration is God. Then people I meet, the stories I hear, and the resilience of communities. I’m also inspired by the ability to make a positive impact through storytelling, whether it’s through a film, a book, or an article. I want my work to spur reflection and spark change.

8. Tell us about Abisola, what other things do you do apart from filmmaking?
Besides filmmaking, I am also a certified project manager and a social entrepreneur. I’ve published three books and have been writing & creating content for over 5 years now. My first book is Travelling Out which explores stories of immigrants, a guide for new migrants.

Afterwards, I authored 365 Days Married and also Journey to Motherhood. As a social entrepreneur, I founded The Hatching Lady in 2017, a platform created to empower youths and women from the ages of 18-35 years old. Through it, we have hosted conferences, trainings, and charity outreaches in Nigeria & Canada. I am passionate about helping others tell their stories and I enjoy mentoring young people. I’m also a bit of a foodie, so when I’m not working on a film project, I like to try out the different cuisines in my community.

9. What are some things that make you happy?
Spending time with my family, connecting with fellow creatives, and seeing my work resonate with people. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that your film has made a difference, no matter how small. Knowing I am also working in line with God’s perfect will makes me really happy. Also, I love good food and good movies!

10. What’s your style?
My style is rooted in authenticity and emotional depth. I try to create content that feels real and speaks to the human experience. I don’t like to shy away from difficult topics, but I aim to present them in a way that is engaging and relatable. I want the audience to feel something, whether it’s joy, sorrow, or reflection.

11. Any words for people reading this?
Never underestimate the power of your story. Every individual has something unique to offer. If you have a passion, don’t let anything stop you. Keep pushing forward, even when the challenges seem impossible. And remember, sometimes the hardest paths lead to the most beautiful destinations.

12. Would you like to give a shout-out to some people who contributed to the success of The Fadugbas?
Absolutely! To the best cast and crew that made this production happen in Canada, thank you so much for trusting me with your time and skills. Major shout out to Olutokun Emmanuel – our super fantastic DOP, Olowofela Johnson, the incredibly talented actor who played – Fadugba, Semilloore Atewelogun our super amazing Therapist, Tolu Adekunle and Fadekemi E.O.J our awesome camera crew members, Bolaji Opakunbi our editor.

Finally, I would like to appreciate my beautiful family, my mum, dad, sisters, brothers, my amazing husband and my son. The miracle of his birth is like air to my wings that keeps me dreaming and wanting me to live fully and do the things God has written about me.

The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the reintroduction of Nigerian History as a subject in basic education.

History was removed from Nigeria’s education curriculum during the 2009/2010 academic session under the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Speaking on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Special Review Show, the Minister emphasised the importance of this directive. He said:

What has been missing in the past is Nigerian history. We now have people who are 30 years old, totally disconnected from our history. It doesn’t happen in any part of the world.

Liquides Imaginaries, in collaboration with Scentified by Cascades Luxury, unveiled its latest fragrance masterpiece, Lunatique, in an immersive scent experience that captivated Lagos’ luxury enthusiasts. Held at the Windsor Gallery on December 14, 2024, the event celebrated the artistry of perfumery, self-discovery, and transformation, drawing inspiration from the phases of the moon.

The atmosphere was nothing short of mesmerizing, with a black, white, and silver theme echoing the elegance and mystery of Lunatique. From the moment guests arrived, the evening embodied refinement, curiosity, and the thrill of sensory exploration. Guests were treated to an intimate journey through the story of Lunatique, a fragrance designed to reveal the hidden depths of one’s personality.

“Lunatique isn’t just a fragrance. It’s a bold statement; a journey of contrasts that invites you to embrace the hidden facets of yourself,” said Tanya Arupani, a Luxury Brand Consultant and the evening’s keynote speaker. She described the fragrance as a blend of dualities, much like the moon itself with an interplay of light and shadow that mirrors the complexities within us.

With every spritz, Lunatique takes the wearer on a sensory adventure. The fragrance begins with bright, refreshing top notes of juniper, pear, and Sichuan pepper. As it evolves, it reveals a surprising heart of iris, neroli, and carrot, an intriguing mix of floral and earthy warmth. The base lingers with sultry, magnetic notes of leather, oud, ambergris, sandalwood, and vetiver, creating a luxurious yet enigmatic profile.

Beyond its star debut, the event offered guests the chance to experience some other iconic creations from Liquides Imaginaries, including Liquide, Desert Suave, Dom Rosa, Fortis, Sancti, and Bloody Wood. Each perfume display was meticulously crafted to immerse attendees in the brand’s world of high artistry and storytelling, making the launch as much about the brand’s ethos as it was about the product.

Speaking on the brand’s vision for Lunatique, Tate Torongo, Regional Director for Liquides Imaginaries, shared, “Liquides Imaginaries perfume is about the moon and how the beauty of the moon influences our life, our moods, and the things we do. It is a real encouragement to look into our deepest selves to discover the hidden side of our personalities.”

The night was not just a launch, it was an invitation. Guests engaged with sensory installations explored the art of fragrance-making and reflected on their inner worlds through the transformative storytelling of Lunatique.

“Every fragrance here feels like it has a soul,” shared one attendee.

“Lunatique, in particular, captures something magnetic and almost otherworldly.”

Now available exclusively through Scentified by Cascades Luxury, this launch has reaffirmed Cascades’ position as a leader in luxury fragrance curation in Nigeria. Speaking on the launch, Derrick Chike Memeh, Director of Cascades Luxury, which operates 30 branches across Nigeria said,

“With Lunatique, Liquides Imaginaries has truly set a new benchmark in the world of niche fragrances. We are thrilled to bring this masterpiece to our discerning clientele.”

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has passed away at the age of 100. The Carter Center, which Jimmy Carter founded after leaving office, confirmed the news in a statement shared on social media. “Our founder, former US President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the organisation said.

The oldest living former president was surrounded by his family at his home in Plains, Georgia.

Jimmy Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, during which time he championed human rights and international diplomacy. Although his tenure lasted only one term, his influence extended far beyond his time in the White House. After leaving office, he dedicated himself to humanitarian causes.

In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, recognising his efforts through The Carter Center in combating Guinea worm disease in Africa, monitoring elections worldwide, and promoting global peace. His commitment to housing initiatives and eradicating disease exemplified his lifelong dedication to improving the lives of the underserved.

President Joe Biden, paying tribute to Jimmy Carter’s extraordinary legacy, said in a statement that “America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian.” He described him as “a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism.” He added, “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.” Joe Biden also announced January 9 as a National Day of Mourning to honour Carter’s life and legacy.

As preparations are underway for a state funeral, many continue to reflect on his legacy of compassion, courage, and hope in their tributes:

Ghana is set to become the fifth African country to allow visa-free travel for all Africans, joining Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin. This new policy, approved by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to take effect by early 2025.

This decision is part of Ghana’s broader plan to simplify travel across Africa and strengthen connections between African countries. By introducing visa-free entry for all African nationals, Ghana aims to enhance regional integration and encourage greater collaboration across the continent.

President Akufo-Addo first committed to this policy during his keynote address at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) in January 2024. Speaking under the theme, “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” he emphasised the need for policies that simplify movement and strengthen ties among African nations. He said:

Many of you had to acquire a visa to come to this event. We made a special arrangement for this conference, reducing the visa acquisition fee by 50%, and we were thus able to receive your visa on arrival. The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free for all Africans, for all Africans travelling into our country, and the process has begun to get the policy implemented this year.

This new visa-free policy aligns with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which has its headquarters in Ghana’s capital, Accra. AfCFTA’s vision is to create a unified African market by promoting the free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent. Albert Muchanga, Ghana’s Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, and Minerals at AfCFTA, commended this decision, calling it a significant step toward achieving this vision of a single African market.

On December 18, 2024, President Akufo-Addo granted executive approval for the policy, and communicated to key ministries the following day, as reported by Asaase News.

Yesterday, December 23rd, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held his first Presidential Media Chat in Lagos, addressing pressing issues in the country. The interview, which aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), covered topics ranging from security and tax reforms to the removal of fuel subsidies and recent stampede incidents.

In the session, the president also responded to critiques of his cabinet size, shared his thoughts on the nation’s economic direction, and urged Nigerians to trust his administration. Below are five key takeaways from the president’s remarks:

On Budget Deficit and Infrastructure

Acknowledging the country’s infrastructure challenges, he stated,
“Yes, we have headed the wrong road in the past. I don’t want to look at that. I want to think about prosperity for our country. I want to think about tomorrow, today.

“We have a serious infrastructure deficit. If you don’t put money on a long-term matching project, a long-term business, you don’t have the short-term to manage a long-term business. It’s not smart. That’s wrong.”

On Fuel Subsidy Removal

Bola Ahmed Tinubu stood firm on his decision to remove fuel subsidies, a move that has sparked debates nationwide. He noted:
“I don’t have any regrets removing fuel subsidy. We can’t be subsidising the entire West Africa sub-region. Either we slice it in half or in bits, we still have to completely remove it.”

On Tax Reforms

Despite opposition to his administration’s tax reform policies, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was clear about their necessity:
“Tax reform is here to stay. We cannot continue to do what we were doing yesterday in today’s economy. The essence of the tax reform bills is to eliminate the influence of colonial rule on Nigeria’s economy.”

On Recent Stampede Incidents

Addressing the tragic stampede incidents tied to charitable giveaways, the president expressed condolences to affected families. He said:
“Condolences to those who lost a family member, but it is good to give. I have been giving out foodstuff, commodities, etc., in Bourdillon. If you know you don’t have enough to give, don’t attempt or publicise it.”

On Reforms and the Future of Nigeria

The president reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing reforms, urging Nigerians to see the bigger picture of long-term growth and prosperity:
“We want this country to grow; there is no other way out of it unless we invest in today’s prosperity and opportunity.”

The president also addressed criticisms of his administration’s “bloated” cabinet, defending the decision to maintain its current size. “I am not ready to shrink the size of my cabinet,” he stated, adding that efficiency has guided his ministerial appointments.

In a historic moment for Nigeria, three exceptional Nigerians—Adebayo Ogunlesi, Wemimo Abbey, and Tope Awotona—have been recognised on Forbes’ inaugural ForbesBLK50 list.

This debut ForbesBLK50 list celebrates the wealthiest, most influential, and impactful Black Americans, marking an important step in addressing the gaps in representation seen in the magazine’s 2009 ranking of the most influential Black Americans. ForbesBLK50 highlights the financial achievements of these honourees and also shines a light on entrepreneurs, innovators, and activists who are changing the world across various industries.

Adebayo Ogunlesi, a seasoned business leader and chairman of Global Infrastructure Partners, brings decades of experience in investment banking and private equity. Wemimo Abbey, cofounder and co-CEO of the fintech startup Esusu, is revolutionising the way renters build credit. Tope Awotona, founder and CEO of the scheduling software company Calendly, has turned a simple idea into a billion-dollar business.

This year’s list also includes powerful figures who have made major strides in business and society, such as Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson.

As Forbes shared, “In 2023, when Forbes launched the ForbesBLK platform, creating a new list of the wealthiest Black Americans was one of its main objectives—but net worth isn’t the only way to keep score of impact and influence in the community and world at large.”

Here are the three Nigerian trailblazers who made this prestigious list, along with how Forbes describes their impact:

Adebayo Ogunlesi – Chairman, co-Founder Global Infrastructure Partners

Age: 70 | Location: New York, NY

A native of Nigeria and now a U.S. citizen, Ogunlesi is a cofounder of New York-based private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). In October, GIP was acquired by BlackRock for $12.5 billion in cash and shares, with Ogunlesi remaining chairman and CEO of GIP. Today, Forbes estimates Ogunlesi—who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oxford, a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School—has a net worth of $1.7 billion. After clerking for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in the early 1980s, Ogunlesi worked as an attorney at the New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Prior to cofounding GIP in 2006, Ogunlesi spent more than 20 years as an investment banker at Credit Suisse.

Wemimo Abbey – Cofounder and Co-CEO, Esusu

Age: 32 | Location: New York, NY

Abbey is cofounder and co-CEO of Esusu, a New York fintech startup that helps renters build their credit histories and scores by reporting rent payments to credit bureaus. More than 20,000 properties currently offer Esusu’s service and some 1.8 million Americans have used Esusu to record a rent payment. The startup also recently launched a direct-to-consumer product, MyEsusu, through which consumers can build credit and monitor their credit scores. In early 2022, Esusu raised $130 million in funding at a $1 billion valuation. Before founding Esusu, Abbey, who grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, worked as a mergers and acquisitions consultant at PWC and cofounded a non-profit and a data analytics startup.

Tope Awotona – Founder and CEO, Calendly

Age: 43 | Location: Atlanta, GA

Awotona is the founder and CEO of the scheduling software startup Calendly, which private investors valued at $3 billion in 2021. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Awotona moved to Atlanta when he was 15, and studied computer science at the University of Georgia before switching majors to business and management information. After working as a salesman for several tech firms and launching a few failed startups, Awotona cashed in his 401(k) in 2013 to found Calendly because he was frustrated with the number of emails it required to schedule meetings. After bootstrapping the company for several years, in 2021 Awotona raised $350 million to further scale Calendly. Today, he is worth an estimated $1.4 billion.

2024 has been a landmark year for MAC Cosmetics, marked by collaborations that brought beauty and fashion together in unparalleled ways. As a driving force behind innovative and sustainable practices, MAC partnered with leading designers and iconic events, cementing its role as a pioneer in artistry and inclusivity.

The series of partnerships began with the Lagos Canvas event on September 3. Pioneered by Mo Abudu, the event celebrated Lagos’s dynamic culture through art, music, food, and fashion. MAC provided luminous, skin-focused makeup looks, complementing the models’ natural features and adding a refined touch to the vibrant runway presentation.

Later in the month, MAC joined forces with Banke Kuku to unveil her highly anticipated SS25 Oceans Collection. The collaboration began with a two-day shoot on September 30 at La Campagne Tropicana, captured by renowned photographer Kelechi Amadiobi.

It was followed by a virtual press conference with leading publications on October 11 during which Banke Kuku shared her vision for the collection. The pinnacle of this partnership was the Oceans Front Row event on October 18 at the Royal Box in Victoria Island. MAC’s artistry brought the ocean-inspired designs to life, captivating an exclusive audience that included influential figures like Mo Abudu, Toke Makinwa, and Her Excellency Ambassador Professor Olufolake Abdulrazaq.

On October 27, MAC took center stage at two prominent SS25 collections, Emmy Kasbit’s and Imad Eduso, showcasing versatility in bringing distinct creative visions to life. At Emmy Kasbit’s runway, MAC’s daring yet refined makeup looks elevated the collection’s narrative of modern tailoring, enhancing the powerful impact of each design. Simultaneously, MAC partnered with Imad Eduso, where the butterfly-inspired collection symbolizing faith, resilience, and renewal was elevated.

The celebration of artistry continued into November with partnerships that spotlighted iconic designers Tiffany Amber on November 2 and Jewel by Lisa on November 9. For both events, the MAC Cosmetics team tailored makeup looks to enhance the distinct styles and creative expressions of these celebrated designers.

MAC’s partnership with Lanre Da Silva also showcased its expertise during the SS25 Eternal Glamour women’s collection on November 17. The collection, a true celebration of bold designs and the brilliance of Nigeria’s creative industry, was enhanced by MAC’s artistry, which infused each look with glamour and elegance.

As MAC’s final contribution to the series of collaborations, their partnership with Future Face Africa by Elizabeth Isiorho, exemplified the brand’s commitment to nurturing young African models and propeling them onto global stages. MAC Cosmetics was pivotal during this year’s showcase, with looks that emphasized individuality and the expressive aspirations of the next generation.

Throughout 2024, MAC Cosmetics demonstrated a thoughtful approach to collaboration, celebrating artistry while fostering meaningful connections between beauty, fashion, and sustainability. These partnerships created opportunities to explore diverse creative perspectives, spotlighting the power of makeup as a form of expression that enhances storytelling.

By working alongside visionary designers and cultural events, MAC continues to inspire innovation, cultivate inclusivity, and contribute to conversations shaping the future of beauty and fashion.

The 6th edition of the highly anticipated Art of Technology (AOT) Lagos conference organized by the Eko Innovation Centre and powered by the Lagos State Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, held recently at the prestigious Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Themed “The AI Revolution: Transforming Lagos into Africa’s Digital Powerhouse,” the event brought together leading voices in technology, policy, and enterprise to explore the immense potential of artificial intelligence and its applications in reshaping the future of Lagos and Africa at large.

In his address at the occasion, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the Lagos State government has created an enabling environment for technology innovation to thrive in the state, through its deliberate policies and investments. The enabling environment, according to him, spurred the Lagos-based startups to raise over $1.2 billion, which is 75 per cent of all startup investments in Nigeria in 2023.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said:

“Through deliberate policies and investments, we have created an enabling environment that fosters innovation and positioned Lagos as a global player in the technology value chain. The achievements reflect the ingenuity of our people and our unwavering commitment to innovation. But we must continue to build on this foundation to secure our position as a leader in the global tech ecosystem.”

Delivering a keynote paper at the event, Managing Director, Enterprise Business Group at Huawei Technologies, Terrens Wu, said from the first growth curve of the informatization age, human society has achieved ubiquitous interconnection, connecting a large number of users and causing a traffic explosion.

“This has accelerated the demand for digital transformation in human society and spawned a second growth curve with 5G and cloud as the main engines. At present, the third growth curve leading the intelligent world is ready to take place, and human society is entering a new era of comprehensive intelligence,” Wu said.

According to him, the demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing power is increasing rapidly. “By the end of this year, we expect that the demand for AI computing power may exceed the demand for general computing power, he said, adding that building an elastic and efficient multi-calculation infrastructure with optimal AI computing power, which is about building an AI native cloud infrastructure, is the key to AI development.”

Earlier in his welcome address, Tubosun Alake, Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology for Lagos State emphasized Lagos’ commitment to becoming a global leader in digital transformation and technological innovation, describing the state as the bridge between Africa and the opportunities of a digital economy.

Additionally, Victor Afolabi, Curator and Convener of the Art of Technology and Founder of the Eko Innovation Centre say events like AoT continue to reinforce Lagos’ position as the gateway to Africa’s digital transformation.

“The focus on AI is in tune with the global changing dynamics and how AI is playing a key role in this.”

The first plenary session for the event, aptly titled “The AI Revolution: Transforming Lagos into Africa’s Digital Powerhouse,” was moderated by Seyi Akindeinde, Founder of Hyperspace Technologies, the panel brought together thought leaders such as Dr. Obadare Peter Adewale, Chief Visionary Officer at Digital Encode; Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hamzat; Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Co-founder and Founding CEO of Accelerate Africa; Dr. Vincent O. Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission; and Gbemisola Aruwayo-Obe, Country General Manager and Technology Leader for West Africa at IBM.

The second plenary session, titled “Beyond the Hype: Preparing Africa’s Infrastructure and Workforce for the Rise of AI,” continued the momentum. Moderated by; Feyisayo Alayande, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, the panel featured influential speakers including,

  • Olugbolahan Olusanya, Africa Sales and Growth Director at TeKnowledge;
  • Femi Osinubi, Partner and Consulting & Risk Services Leader for West Africa at PwC;
  • Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta;
  • Folashade Ambrose Medebem, Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment for Lagos State;
  • and Bunmi Akinyemiju, Cofounder of Venture Garden Group.

This session addressed Africa’s readiness to adopt AI on a large scale and the need for strategic investments in infrastructure, education, and cross-sector collaborations. Panelists also highlighted the role of policy frameworks in fostering innovation while ensuring equitable access to AI-driven opportunities.

The third plenary session, “Stay Woke: Balancing Data, Privacy, and Ethics in Nigeria’s Digital Hustle,” brought to the fore the ethical implications of AI adoption. Moderated by Omoruyi Edoigiawerie, Founder and Chief Servant at EandCLegal.

The panel featured such speakers as;

  • Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, Founder and CEO of Rise Networks;
  • Dr. Bayo Adekanmbi, Founder of Data Science Nigeria;
  • Jimoh Adetunji Wasiu, Head of Applications Department at the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology;
  • and Abimbola Owoeye, Country Lead for Dell Technologies Nigeria.

The conversation revolved around the critical need for ethical guardrails in AI deployment, with panelists agreeing that a data-driven future must prioritize transparency and accountability to safeguard public trust.

There were also breakout sessions that created more intimate environments for participants to explore deeper into specific topics. These sessions tackled themes such as “AI in Nigeria’s Workforce: Job Creator or Job Disruptor?” and “AI for Social Good: Using Data to Solve Lagos’ Most Pressing Social Issues.”

The discussions were led by a diverse mix of industry leaders, startup founders, and academic experts, offering actionable insights and case studies. The breakout sessions were highly interactive, with participants exchanging ideas and forging connections that could shape the future of AI implementation in Nigeria.

The day’s programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Engr. Ibilola Kasunmu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology for Lagos State. Her heartfelt gratitude extended to all stakeholders, sponsors, and participants who contributed to the success of AOT Lagos 6.0.

Every great brand starts with a story, and Gosh Wardrobe is no exception. It all began when Abimbola Opayemi faced a challenge many women know too well—imagining bold, unique styles only to see them fall flat.

Speaking about how pain birthed her innate talent, she shared:

“I once had a tailor whom I would sketch designs for. Despite this, I would experience the pain of disappointment and delay just when I needed my clothes, as he would more often than not never meet up. But anytime he did, and I wore the designs, they were showstoppers. One night, I felt restless in my spirit and had this inspiration from God to go to fashion school to hone my skills. I told my husband, and his response was, ‘Go for it. This must be God.’ The rest, as they say, is history.”.

Fast forward to today, and Gosh Wardrobe isn’t just a store—it’s a destination; an idea coming to life. Located in the heart of Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos, Gosh Wardrobe offers women the freedom to make a statement through meticulously crafted outfits. From the moment you walk in, you feel it: a space designed for boldness, confidence, and elegance.

On December 1, 2024, Gosh Wardrobe opened its doors to existing and prospective customers with an event that was more than just a grand opening—it was a celebration of style. Guests were treated to an unforgettable experience, exploring stunning collections that perfectly capture the spirit of the modern, upwardly mobile woman.

The day was filled with energy, creativity, and an undeniable vibe that Gosh Wardrobe isn’t just about fashion—it’s a lifestyle. For over ten years, Gosh Wardrobe thrived through direct customer engagement and word of mouth, building a loyal network across Nigeria and internationally without any media advertising.

According to Opayemi: “Our customers wanted a space where they could drive in, pick a ready-to-wear piece, and meet up with multiple social engagements. Opening this showroom is a response to that demand.”

What makes Gosh Wardrobe stand out is not just about clothing; it’s about empowering women to embrace their individuality with elegance and confidence. Every piece blends vibrant African fabrics with modern design, giving women the freedom to express themselves, whether through a show-stopping dress or a sleek power suit.

This flagship store marks a new chapter for the brand, which has grown from a small studio apartment into a brand without borders, serving clients in the UK, US, Canada, and beyond, over the past decade. Gosh Wardrobe has become a go-to for women who demand quality, style, and craftsmanship—whether they’re looking for a standout piece for a special event or everyday elegance that turns heads.

But the heart of Gosh Wardrobe lies in its mission: empowering women to feel confident in their own skin. Opayemi’s journey reflects the struggles many women face in finding clothes that truly reflect their individuality.

Gosh Wardrobe gives women a space where their voices are heard, and their visions are brought to life. As the brand continues to grow and expand globally, its mission is clear: to redefine bespoke fashion and help women embrace their unique style. The Lagos flagship store is just the beginning.

For the woman who wants her style to make an impact, Gosh Wardrobe is where that journey starts. Whether you’re stepping into the Lagos store or connecting from anywhere in the world, your style dreams are about to come to life.

In a glittering celebration that drew together international media heavyweights, thought leaders, royalty, and policymakers, Stephanie Busari was honoured for her 25 years of groundbreaking work in journalism and 16 years of distinguished service at CNN.

The event, held in Lagos at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture & History and attended by a constellation of influential figures, paid tribute to Busari’s extraordinary legacy—an Emmy, Peabody, and Gracie award-winning journalist whose reporting has reshaped global perspectives on Africa.

The evening overflowed with accolades, heartfelt testimonials, and stirring endorsements from a chorus of eminent voices. They hailed Busari not only as a trailblazer in media but also as a mentor, inspiration, and catalyst for positive change. Her expertise, integrity, and unyielding commitment to telling the world’s most important—and often untold—stories were placed front and centre.

Some of the dignitaries and prominent Nigerians in attendance included Honourable Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate, Her Excellency First Lady of Kwara, Amb. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, Honourable Abike Dabiri, Pastor Paul and Ifeanyi Adefarasin, Mo Abudu, Chairman Arise News Channel Nduka Obaigbena, John Momoh, Channels TV, Tonye Patrick Cole min, Honourable Commissioner Folashade Ambrose, Pastor Bolaji Idowu, Betty and Soni Irabor, Kate Isa, Kemi Adetiba, Colette Otusheso, Adebola Williams, Reality TV star Chioma Ikokwu and Mary Ojulari.

Global Tributes and Testimonies
A remarkable highlight of the night was a video tribute from Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the first female President of Mauritius, who acknowledged Busari’s courage, vision, and the significance of her accomplishments, recalling her first encounter with Stephanie in 2017 at the TED Global conference.

“I saw then a very articulate, determined, and ambitious young lady. Stephanie has become the face of Africa at CNN. People like Stephanie provide the voice that our continent needs,” said Gurib-Fakim.

From within the CNN family, renowned anchor Richard Quest said it was “an honour and a pleasure to … celebrate your achievements in broadcast and journalism,” he said.

“Over the years, we’ve done many stories trying to bring the excitement, vibrancy, imagination, and enthusiasm of Africa to the global audience. You are unique in your ability to do this,” he added.

Other CNN colleagues underscored her role as a mentor and leader, praising the standards of storytelling she championed and her lasting impact on the industry.

Celebrated Nigerian leaders and influencers also weighed in. Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria’s Minister of Trade and Investment, described Busari’s career as a testament to the power of narrative in shaping economic and cultural landscapes, saying

“I’m so proud of you. Sixteen years at CNN is no joke, on the global stage representing your country. This isn’t just journalism; it’s impact. Your life has made a difference in this career, and my prayer is that you continue to shine. Your best is yet to come.”

Royal support came from Olori Atuwatse III, who underscored the cultural significance of Busari’s work, saying: “We recently met, but I felt immediately connected to you because of your excellence, your commitment, your passion, and the professionalism with which you approach your work. His Majesty and I have been very blessed to know you.

We celebrate with you from the Iwere Kingdom and join the rest of the world in acknowledging the wonderful, excellent, and amazing gift that you are to the media world and to the world at large.”

A Platform for the Future: Stephanie Busari Storytelling Academy
While the evening was a tribute to her illustrious past, Busari also used the platform to unveil her vision for the future. The newly launched Stephanie Busari Storytelling Academy aims to nurture 100,000 African storytellers over the next decade, while mobilizing a $100 million fund to support thousands of emerging narratives.

Guided by Chairman Tonye Cole, the Academy will provide training, mentorship, and resources to aspiring journalists, filmmakers, and creators determined to present Africa’s stories with authenticity and nuance.

“Tonight is a celebration of the journey so far, but it is also a moment to look ahead,” Busari stated. “For 25 years, I’ve told stories that matter. Now, I want to help others do the same. The Academy will equip a new generation of storytellers with the tools to share their truth—unfiltered, undiluted, and unafraid. If we are to shift global perceptions and unlock Africa’s full potential, we must invest in the people who will shape how the world sees us.”

Expanding Her Reach: SBB Media and StephanieBusari.com
The night also marked the debut of Busari’s new website, StephanieBusari.com, and the official introduction of SBB Media, her innovative consultancy poised to take African narratives global.

SBB Media will offer a suite of services—from documentary filmmaking and media training to public speaking coaching and strategic communications consultancy—tailored for individuals, brands, and organizations looking to engage authentically with African audiences and issues.

“SBB Media is my personal pledge to keep forging ahead,” Busari explained. “After decades of reporting at the frontline of some of the world’s biggest stories, I’ve learned one thing: who tells the story matters. Through SBB Media, we will partner with visionaries, activists, and entrepreneurs to ensure their messages resonate far beyond their borders. We will use our media acumen to elevate African voices in global dialogues, shifting mindsets and policies.”

Prominent Voices and Supporters
High-profile guests, including Pastor Paul Adefarasin, John Momoh, Mo Abudu, Debola Williams, and Toyin Saraki, delivered impassioned speeches, each reflecting on Busari’s influence. They spoke of her unwavering moral compass, her eye for detail and human connection, and the profound ripple effects of her work.

“Stephanie has been a light in the media world,” said Mo Abudu. “With this Academy, website, and media company, she is sharing the burden of the torch, giving countless others the opportunity to discover their voices, refine their craft, and find global audiences.”

Corporate partnerships also shone through. Chivas Regal and major media outlets like 54 News and Channels TV affirmed their support for Busari’s initiatives, recognizing the transformative power of inclusive and representative storytelling. Their involvement ensures that budding storytellers trained by the Academy will have platforms to reach audiences and the backing of a robust international network.

A New Chapter, A Renewed Promise
As the evening drew to a close, Busari’s words captured the essence of the celebration. “I stand here grateful for the 25 years behind me and excited for the decades ahead,” she said.

“We have much work to do—rewriting outdated narratives, highlighting talent and innovation, and investing in the next wave of creators. Tonight, we honour the past, but starting tomorrow, we build a future of limitless storytelling, where Africa’s many stories are told with pride, accuracy, and enduring impact.”

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja in honour of former military leader and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon, according to reports.

The announcement was made today by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a briefing with State House correspondents following the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The institution will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, reports suggest.

Mohammed explained that the renaming is a tribute to Yakubu Gowon’s pivotal role in fostering national unity and stability during his time as Head of State.

The Council has also resolved to notify the National Assembly about the decision and seek its formal approval for the name change, according to reports.

Established in 1988, the University of Abuja, often referred to as UNIABUJA, operates as a dual-mode institution, offering both conventional and distance learning programmes. The university began academic activities in 1990, matriculating its first set of students that same year.

In related developments, members of the Federal Executive Council will reportedly go on recess from December 18, 2024, and are expected to resume duties on January 6, 2025.

In Nigeria, gender-based violence continues to cast a shadow over countless lives, leaving women and girls vulnerable and marginalized.

However, during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a collective cry for change echoes across the nation, reminding us of the possibility of a violence-free future.

From November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10th, Human Rights Day, communities worldwide come together to spotlight the urgent need to end gender-based violence.

For six consecutive years, the Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) has led the charge in Nigeria through its impactful No Tolerance March. This initiative unites individuals, communities, and organizations under a shared vision of a nation where women and girls can live free from fear and harm.

The 2024 No Tolerance March reached even greater heights, making its presence felt across Nigerian cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan, in Nigeria, London and Manchester in the United Kingdom, and Frankfurt, Germany as well as across the Midwest, Southern, and Eastern coast of America in Houston, Minnesota, New York and Washington DC.

Ibadan, Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria

New York, United States of America

Manchester, United Kingdom

Washington DC, United States of America

The march showcased the strength of unity, drawing advocates, survivors, students, and community leaders to take a firm stand against all forms of gender-based violence.

What sets the No Tolerance March apart is its deep connection to the realities in Nigeria. Against the backdrop of systemic challenges and cultural norms that often perpetuate violence, WARIF’s campaign has become a symbol of hope and empowerment.

It is not just a call to action, it is a movement fostering accountability, dialogue, and tangible change in Nigerian communities. Supported by local and international partners, the march serves as both an educational platform and a rallying cry. It creates space for conversations about prevention, the importance of safe spaces, and the systemic barriers that must be dismantled to protect women and girls. Through these efforts, WARIF is shaping a brighter future for future generations.

London, United Kingdom

Minnesota, United States of America

Houston, United States of America

Frankfurt, Germany

With its holistic approach, WARIF combines prevention, intervention, and advocacy to support survivors and address the root causes of gender-based violence. From medical and counselling services to community outreach and education programs, WARIF continues to transform lives and create lasting change.

As the 16 Days of Activism continues, the No Tolerance March stands as a powerful testament to the impact of collective action. It reminds us that when communities unite, change is possible, and a violence-free world is within reach. Together, we can ensure that every woman and girl lives with dignity, safety, and the freedom to thrive.

ABOUT WARIF
The Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) is a non-profit organization committed to addressing the high prevalence of sexual violence, trafficking, and gender-based violence in Nigeria.

Through impactful and sustainable initiatives, WARIF provides prevention and intervention strategies to support survivors and foster systemic change. By empowering communities and advocating for justice, WARIF continues to lead the fight against gender-based violence.

Namibia has now joined the ranks of countries like Liberia, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, where women have held the highest office in the land. Since gaining independence in 1990, Namibia has been led exclusively by male presidents from one dominant political party—until now. Enter Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the newly elected president and a trailblazer who just made history as the country’s first female leader. Winning the election with 57% of the vote, she ushers in a new era of leadership.

Netumbo’s victory is not just a milestone for gender representation but also a significant moment in Namibia’s political story. Her party, SWAPO (South West Africa People’s Organisation), has been at the centre of the country’s independence and governance. Defeating her closest opponent, Panduleni Itula, leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who secured 25.5% of the vote, Netumbo’s win reflects the country’s trust in her vision and leadership.

But who is Netumbo, the woman rewriting the rules of leadership in Namibia?

Born in Onamutai, a small village in northern Namibia, Netumbo grew up as the ninth of thirteen children. Her political journey began early, with her active involvement in SWAPO during Namibia’s struggle for independence. Alongside her passion for politics, she also built a solid academic foundation, studying at the Lenin Higher Komsomol School in the Soviet Union, earning a management degree from Glasgow College of Technology, and completing a master’s in diplomatic studies at Keele University in the UK.

Her political career has been nothing short of groundbreaking. In 2015, she became Namibia’s Deputy Prime Minister while also serving as Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. Within SWAPO, she emerged as a pivotal voice, driving the party’s vision and strategy. Following the unexpected passing of President Hage Geingob earlier this year, Netumbo assumed the role of vice-president, a position that set the stage for her historic presidential run.

Beyond her political achievements, Netumbo leads a rich personal life. She’s married to Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah, a former chief of Namibia’s Defence Force, and they have three sons. While she’s kept her family life private, her commitment to social development is evident in her advocacy for children’s welfare and education.

In her victory speech, she shared her vision for Namibia, emphasising the need to tackle the country’s biggest challenges, including unemployment, economic reform, and social inequality. She also highlighted the importance of peace and stability, stating, “The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability.”

As she prepares to take office, all eyes are on Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Her leadership marks a new chapter for Namibia, and the world is eager to see how she steers the nation into its next phase of growth and progress.

Dr Adaora Offor, supported by her husband, Sir Dr Emeka Offor, fulfilled a heartfelt promise by providing ten widows with new homes as part of the Touch-A-Life Housing Initiative on November 24th 2024. The third phase of the project, which took place in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, offers these women a fresh start and renewed hope for the future.

The Touch-A-Life Housing Initiative was born out of Dr Adaora Offor’s understanding of the struggles widows face, particularly those who are left vulnerable after the loss of their husbands. Many widows experience financial instability and social neglect. Dr Adaora Offor aims to empower these women by providing more than just housing; she is giving them the tools to rebuild their lives.

The newly built two-bedroom homes each widow received were fully furnished, with living rooms, dining areas, and kitchens stocked with essentials to help them and their families begin a new chapter. These homes are not just physical structures; they are symbols of dignity, safety, and a brighter future for the widows.

The selection process for the widows was carefully managed, with collaboration from local community leaders and organisations. The initiative prioritises women with children, poor living conditions, and those who have limited support networks.

One widow expressed her gratitude, saying, “This is not just a house; this is my children’s future.”

The event was also attended by the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo CFR, who commended Dr Adaora Offor for her commitment to supporting widows. He called on lawmakers to pass laws that protect widows and end harmful cultural practices that harm them.

Looking to the future, Dr Offor announced that a new phase of the initiative will begin in early 2025, with plans to provide ten more widows with homes. She reaffirmed her dedication to the cause, saying, “We will continue to touch lives, and I will carry on with this mission for as long as I live.”

In a significant turn of events, Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election. This marks a triumphant return to power for John, who previously led the nation from 2012 to 2017. His victory comes after Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia publicly conceded and accepted the results.

This election represents a pivotal moment in Ghana’s democratic journey, as it ends two consecutive terms of governance by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), under the outgoing President, Nana AkufoAddo. John John Dramani Mahama’s win also highlights his resilience, comin g after two failed bids in 2016 and 2020 to reclaim the presidency.

“The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility,” John said during a news conference today.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he also confirmed he received a congratulatory call from Mahamudu, who acknowledged his “emphatic victory.”

Speaking during his concession, Mahamudu, the NPP’s presidential candidate, revealed that his party’s internal collation of results showed the NDC had won both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Let me say that the data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the Presidential election decisively.

The NDC has also won the parliamentary election. Even though we await final collation of a number of seats, I believe ultimately these will not change the outcome.

Before his concession speech, tensions had flared in several local constituency centres, with reports of scuffles as results continued to arrive from polling stations.

Mahamudu further explained his decision to concede before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration, stating,

I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country.

It is important that the world investor community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana. The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.

While the Electoral Commission’s formal announcement is still pending, Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession has effectively confirmed the outcome of the election.

Adding to the historic nature of this moment, Ghana is set to welcome its first female vice-president. Professor Jane OpokuAgyemang, a 73-year-old former Minister of Education, will make history as she assumes the role alongside John Mahama.

This milestone, while significant, highlights the slow progress of gender representation in African democracy. Just recently, Namibia elected its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, since gaining independence in  1990.

At just 16, Gout Gout has already made a name for himself in the world of athletics. This young Australian sprinter, of South Sudanese descent, recently ran the 200m in an incredible 20.04 seconds at the Australian Schools Championships in Brisbane, becoming the fastest 16-year-old ever to cover that distance.

The record-breaking run didn’t just put him in the history books as the fastest teenager to run the 200m—it also broke the 1968 Olympic record set by Peter Norman. Gout’s time is now the second fastest ever by someone under 18, with only Erriyon Knighton’s 19.84-second run at 17 in 2021 ahead of him.

Reacting to this remarkable achievement, Gout shared,

It’s pretty crazy. Right now I can’t process it, but I guess tonight when I go to bed, I’ll think about it. These are adults. And me, I’m just a kid, and I’m running them (down).

I’ve been chasing that record, but I didn’t think it would come this year. I thought it would come maybe next year, the year after that.

Gout, who turns 17 later this month, also ran the fourth-fastest 100m by an Australian, clocking 10.04 seconds on Friday.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Gout’s speed and running style have already earned him comparisons to Jamaican legend Usain Bolt. Looking ahead, he’s set his sights on the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, where, at 24, he hopes to compete at his best.
