On November 3rd, 2024, the Esther Williams Foundation hosted an impactful outreach program at Queens College, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos. The “Pad a Girl” initiative brought together hundreds of young girls for a day focused on empowerment, education, and inspiration centred on menstrual hygiene and personal development.

500 swag bags were said to be distributed during the event, each containing sanitary products notepads, stationery, and toothbrushes—essentials aimed at equipping the girls with tools to prioritise health, education, and self-care. The day began with insightful talks from notable speakers, including Oyindamola Oyinade, a dedicated advocate for the girl child empowerment. She encouraged the girls to embrace self-belief, good hygiene, and resilience as they pursue their dreams.

Adding to the impactful lineup, Feyisayo Onogberie conducted a live demonstration on proper sanitary pad usage, breaking down stigmas, and teaching the girls practical menstrual health management tips. This hands-on session promoted SDG 3—Good Health and Well-Being by fostering open discussions and providing expert-led knowledge.

The event also featured an engaging fireside chat with panellists, including Esther Williams (founder of the Esther Williams Foundation), Damola Ayoade, and Feyisayo Onogberie, who answered the girls’ pressing questions on menstrual hygiene and personal empowerment. The day was filled with meaningful conversations, encouragement, and the distribution of life-changing resources.

The following day, November 4th, 2024, the Foundation expanded its outreach to Oluwole Secondary School Ejigbo, Lagos State, where 500 swag bags were also distributed to students. These bags contained similar sanitary products and essential items, ensuring the foundation’s mission of empowering young girls reached even more communities.

The event began with an insightful session led by Esther Williams, the founder of the Esther Williams Foundation. She educated the girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene and addressed the need to break the stigmas surrounding it. Following her session, Odeyemi Wemimo conducted a practical demonstration on menstrual health and effective management, providing the girls with essential knowledge and skills.

Across both events, 1000 swag bags were said to have been distributed, to impact the lives of the girls who attended. The Esther Williams Foundation’s commitment to breaking barriers, fostering good hygiene practices, and inspiring confidence in the next generation of girls was evident at every step.

Ballantine‘s blended Scotch whisky proudly reflects on the electrifying success of the “Even In The Day” Festival, held on December 20th and 21st, 2024, at Muri Okunola Park in Lagos. The two-day festival brought together thousands of music aficionados for a wonderful experience celebrating a vibrant mix of Amapiano, Afro-house, EDM, and deep house music.

The venue came alive as attendees immersed themselves in the festival’s energy. Ballantine’s played a vital role with its signature handmade cocktails that perfectly complemented the lively atmosphere.

On Day 1, the Soakers Experience converted the Park into a water-themed wonderland with giant water slides, splash zones, water cannon wars, and balloon fights, adding a humorous element to the festival. The atmosphere was boosted by amazing performances, with Skyla Tylaa stealing the show by debuting a previously unreleased track from Wizkid‘s Morayo album.

Day 2 was for die-hard electronic and house music aficionados. Tobi Peter, DJ Khalifa, Six7even, and Sounds of Ace took to the decks and kept the crowd dancing late into the night. The Interactive Playoff Stage added a new level of excitement, with people partaking in rap battles, dance-offs, and bull rides. This made the festival more than just music—it was a celebration of creativity and joy. DJ Consequence and Blak Dave closed the festival with stunning sets that left fans with lasting memories.

In today’s interview, we sit down with Abisola Olutokun, a talented Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker, shaking up the world of storytelling with her unique perspective.

From her early days as a child actor to becoming a director, Abisola is carving a niche for herself in the competitive world of filmmaking. Known for her recent production The Fadugbas, she shares insights into her journey, her challenges as a diasporic filmmaker, and what keeps her going.

1. What drew you to filmmaking?
I have always regarded myself as a storyteller. I have always loved telling stories, whether it’s through blogging, writing, or speaking. Before filmmaking, I authored three amazing books that bordered on migration, family, newlyweds, and childbearing. I discovered filmmaking as another avenue to tell transformative stories, it’s a different medium, but it has the power to touch people in a unique way.

2. Tell us about The Fadugbas, what inspired it?
Having first-hand experience as an immigrant, I have been able to witness the struggles that many immigrant couples go through, especially when adjusting to life abroad. The Fadugbas was born from my desire to educate, to help maintain peace and love in relationships, but in an engaging and relatable way.

Being in Canada for over seven years, I’ve seen marriages break down due to cultural shifts and the strain of adapting to new surroundings. I wanted to explore how couples can work through those challenges and address them before they result in a breakup.

3. Before The Fadugbas, did you have a film background?
“Oh yes! I started off as a child actor at the age of 10, featuring in my first film. After that, I continued acting in church plays before moving up to lead Covenant University’s Theatre Group as their Director. I also had a similar position during Youth service at the National Christian Corpers’ Fellowship (NCCF).

Later, I honed my skills by taking acting classes at Radiance Toronto. Interestingly, the inspiration for my first book came while attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), I was part of the Filmstars project in Toronto. My first short film, Japa Wahala, came out in 2023 and that was an incredible learning experience.

4. What do you think makes a good movie?
A good movie is driven by a strong and relatable story. It all comes down to the narrative. But, it’s also about the right cast and crew that understand the vision of the story and are committed to delivering accurately.

You can have the perfect story, but without the right actors to bring it to life, it might not convey the emotions and depth that the story deserves.

5. What are some challenges you faced producing The Fadugbas?
As a new filmmaker, I faced quite a few challenges. I had to wear my hat as a project manager to navigate one of the biggest hurdles in the production which included managing the different phases of the projects, logistics and resources, cast and crew scattered across different locations while trying to maintain the authenticity of the story. Budgeting is always a challenge, especially for independent filmmakers, and getting the right team together for a project is not always easy but perseverance and passion helped me push through.

6. What sort of movies would you like to work on but haven’t had the opportunity yet?
There are many genres I would love to explore. I’m particularly interested in historical dramas and documentaries that explore African heritage, as well as films that tackle social issues like immigration, love and family.

7. What inspires you as a person?
My main source of inspiration is God. Then people I meet, the stories I hear, and the resilience of communities. I’m also inspired by the ability to make a positive impact through storytelling, whether it’s through a film, a book, or an article. I want my work to spur reflection and spark change.

8. Tell us about Abisola, what other things do you do apart from filmmaking?
Besides filmmaking, I am also a certified project manager and a social entrepreneur. I’ve published three books and have been writing & creating content for over 5 years now. My first book is Travelling Out which explores stories of immigrants, a guide for new migrants.

Afterwards, I authored 365 Days Married and also Journey to Motherhood. As a social entrepreneur, I founded The Hatching Lady in 2017, a platform created to empower youths and women from the ages of 18-35 years old. Through it, we have hosted conferences, trainings, and charity outreaches in Nigeria & Canada. I am passionate about helping others tell their stories and I enjoy mentoring young people. I’m also a bit of a foodie, so when I’m not working on a film project, I like to try out the different cuisines in my community.

9. What are some things that make you happy?
Spending time with my family, connecting with fellow creatives, and seeing my work resonate with people. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that your film has made a difference, no matter how small. Knowing I am also working in line with God’s perfect will makes me really happy. Also, I love good food and good movies!

10. What’s your style?
My style is rooted in authenticity and emotional depth. I try to create content that feels real and speaks to the human experience. I don’t like to shy away from difficult topics, but I aim to present them in a way that is engaging and relatable. I want the audience to feel something, whether it’s joy, sorrow, or reflection.

11. Any words for people reading this?
Never underestimate the power of your story. Every individual has something unique to offer. If you have a passion, don’t let anything stop you. Keep pushing forward, even when the challenges seem impossible. And remember, sometimes the hardest paths lead to the most beautiful destinations.

Written by Emil Garuba, the story follows Katangiri (Segun Arinze), a retired police inspector turned vigilante who is reluctantly summoned to Abuja to solve his cousin’s mystery murder. This leads him deep into a web of family secrets, betrayal, and suspense. Armed with his wits, faithful rifle, and a touch of quirkiness, Katangiri’s escapades are full of thrills, humour, and unexpected twists that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

Filmed against the vibrant backdrop of Abuja and the serene landscapes of Jos, “Katangari Goes To Town” features a stellar cast, including Segun Arinze, Ireti Doyle, Munachi Abii, Sani Mu’azu, Bethel ‘Senator’ Njoku, Gbubemi Ejeye, and many more.

Launched in 2021, the First Features Project has empowered 12 young filmmakers, providing them with the training and resources to direct seven compelling homegrown narratives for theatrical and streaming platforms.

Previous works from the project include “Cake” (Prosper Edesiri), “Love and Life” (Reuben Reng), “It Blooms in June” (Korede Azeez), “A Father’s Love” (Sebastian Ukwa), “Kill Boro” (Courage Obayuwana), “At Ease” (Seun Richards), and “A Danfo Christmas” (Sebastian Ukwa). “Katangari Goes To Town” by Reuben Reng ushers in the 2025 slate of First Feature films.

Beyond the screen, the “First Features Project” has created a ripple effect across the Nigerian film industry. By nurturing young talent and providing them with resources, mentorship, and a platform, the project solidifies the future of the next generation of Nollywood filmmakers.

Led by Nollywood veterans Steve Gukas and Dotun Olakunri, the First Features Project provides emerging directors with hands-on training and mentorship to bring their feature-length films to life. “Katangari Goes To Town is the eighth film from this initiative, and four more productions are slated for 2025.

The festive season is here, and a big part of it is reflecting on the year, those we love, the moments we shared, and the people in our lives we are most grateful for. For Indomie Noodles, we believe this Christmas culture is at the heart of Nigerians and set out to make it even bigger and special for various individuals and communities!

This year, for Christmas, Indomie Noodles launched her Season to Show Some Love campaign with one goal in mind—to spread warmth and gratitude and create unforgettable moments with our beloved customers and their loved ones.

To kick off the festive campaign, launching a heartwarming TV commercial and celebrating the spirit of the season and capturing the essence of our Christmas campaign. In this TVC, we introduced the Indomie Santa, who quickly became a central figure across all our branding this festive season.

To extend the excitement, Indomie Santa launched a digital engagement, asking our amazing Indomie family on social media:

“Who has shown you love this year?” He asked fans to celebrate their loved ones by sharing heartfelt photos and messages of gratitude, appreciating the one person who had shown them love in 2024.

The reward? A surprise visit from Indomie Santa and his cheerful team of elves. The goal was clear, for Indomie Noodles to help them show love to the person who has shown them love this year!

After going through over 300 touching stories, 4 winners stood out—two from Lagos and two from Ibadan. Our first winner was Tochi Ibe, who shared a heartfelt story about her uncle, Julius Chibueze. When life got difficult after the loss of her father, Julius stepped in assuming the role of her father, seeing her through school, paying all her bills, and being present to support, love, and care for her.

Our next winner, Busayo Enilari wrote about Olapeju Arisoyin, a kind stranger, and one-time neighbour, who ended up being the “god-sent angel”, taking care of her younger sister, feeding her and housing her, after she ( Busayo) gained admission into school, and was burdened with the responsibility of raising funds for school.

In Ibadan, Olalade celebrated her mother, whose strength and wisdom have been a guiding light through every stage of life. Our final winner, Temidayo Ifeolu, chose to celebrate his parents, expressing gratitude for their endless love and sacrifices.

The Indomie Santa Claus team didn’t waste any time! On December 21st, we kicked off the celebrations in Lagos. With trumpets blaring, drums beating, and joyful melodies as our Santa and his elves danced their way into the homes of Julius and Olapeju. The look of surprise and joy on their faces was priceless!

Olapeju couldn’t hold back her emotions, saying, “Sincerely, I was not expecting this at all. I am so happy, from the depth of my heart, I am just so happy.”

The magic continued on December 22nd in Ibadan. Indomie Santa Claus and his lively elves brought the same energy, lighting up the homes of Olalade and Temidayo’s mother. With music, dance, and heartfelt laughter, the moments were nothing short of magical. Ifeolu joyously announced,

I am so grateful and happy that my son nominated me for this Indomie celebration. Thank you, Indomie, for showing me this massive love during this Christmas celebration.

Turning to her son, she added, D1, thank you so much for this, I love you massively.

But the love didn’t stop there. The entire community came out to join the celebration! They danced, took pictures, and enjoyed steaming bowls of delicious Indomie Noodles.

Because the impact of great individuals in every community has a ripple effect on the community at large. We at Indomie celebrated the individual and extended the celebrations to the entire community.

Reflecting on the campaign, Rahmotallahi Adeniyi, our Digital Marketing Manager, shared her excitement:

Our Digital approach was the heartbeat of the Indomie Santa Surprise campaign, leading the launch with a captivating TVC across Indomie Nigeria’s platforms and bringing Santa to life on Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and TikTok.

Indomie Santa not only took over every digital space, starting from display pictures to heartfelt DM responses but also sparked meaningful engagement by asking fans to celebrate those who had shown them love. This digital strategy helped to keep our audience informed, engaged, and connected, making the festive season truly unforgettable.

Jamui Shobajo, the National BTL Manager, added,

The goal of this campaign, for the BTL team, is that we want to strengthen the bond between Indomie and its communities by creating memorable personal moments with them, by engaging them on a personal basis such as this, they will truly feel the love and will be excited to show it to other people.

This year’s theme, “Fueling Resilience: Empowering Diversity for Economic Success,” emphasized the critical role of resilience and diversity in driving sustainable progress. Speaking at the conference, Lagos State Governor; Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Hon. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment.

Amina Oyagbola, Founder of WISCAR, articulated the organization’s enduring impact.

For 16 years, WISCAR has tirelessly elevated women into leadership roles through mentorship, career development, and advocacy. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, it’s vital to intensify efforts to close the gender equality gap, she said, emphasizing that WISCAR has mentored over 500 women across diverse sectors.

The conference celebrated several milestones, including the unveiling of The WISCAR Mentoring Book and the presentation of the Professor Grace Alele-Williams Alumni Impact Award to Dolapo Agbede, a renowned diversity and inclusion expert.

Agbede was lauded for her resilience and pioneering contributions to advancing inclusion in Africa.
Keynote speaker and 2024 Distinguished WISCAR Awardee, Funke Opeke, Founder of MainOne, shared her journey of resilience in revolutionizing Nigeria’s tech infrastructure.

The improbable is not always impossible, she remarked, quoting Nelson Mandela. “With determination, we can overcome barriers and achieve remarkable feats.

The event featured a variety of engaging activities, including a glamorous red carpet session, an inspiring founder’s speech, and thought-provoking panel discussions. Attendees also had the opportunity to network with industry leaders and peers, creating lasting connections in a supportive environment.

WISCAR’s annual conference has a reputation for hosting notable figures, and this year was no exception. On December 16th, 2024, The Jewel Aeida was filled with laughter, warmth, and community as Olive Emodi hosted the third edition of Olive’s Singles PJ Party. The event aimed to spread the true spirit of Christmas by offering a warm, welcoming space for single women—whether unmarried, divorced, or widowed. It brought together 24 incredible women to share in a day of connection, support, and festive joy while combating the loneliness that often accompanies this time of year.

From the moment they arrived, guests were treated to a day of pampering, with complimentary makeup and hairstyling, cozy pyjamas, exclusive goodie bags, karaoke, and great music. Delicious food and drinks kept everyone refreshed, while the real highlight of the day—an unforgettable performance by Johnny Drille—had the ladies singing, swaying, and embracing the magic of the moment. His soulful tunes created an atmosphere of pure joy that no one would forget.

Special surprise guests added extra sparkle to the day. Lolo 1 (Adaku from Jenifa’s Diary), Nollywood actor Anee Ichia, and social media star The Real Femi were on hand to share their energy and warmth. The CEO of The Jewel Aeida, Oluwatoyin Olusanya-Onadele, along with her mother, sprinkled some magic into the atmosphere and shared a dance with the ladies.

Also present was award-winning travel blogger Queen Bethia, who shared her inspiring journey to 79 countries so far, to travel the world. She encouraged the ladies to explore the world and live life boldly while sharing tips on how to travel affordably.

A particularly touching moment came when Olive brought her mother—who is a widow—and her aunty as special guests. Her mother closed the event by offering a heartfelt prayer over the ladies, creating a deeply emotional and spiritual moment. As the day came to an end, the atmosphere was charged with raw emotion: tears, hugs, and heartfelt conversations as the women connected, shared their stories, and unburdened their hearts.

Olive’s Singles PJ Party was a true celebration of sisterhood, empowerment, and the joy of togetherness. The event reminded everyone that Christmas isn’t just about family—it’s about creating meaningful connections and celebrating life with those who uplift and inspire us.

As the event grows, Olive’s vision is expanding. With plans to take the experience nationwide and even globally, she hopes to introduce mentorship and training sessions throughout the year.

The Christmas season, often associated with joy and togetherness, can also evoke feelings of loneliness for those without close family or a significant other. The growing popularity of family-themed holiday photoshoots can intensify these emotions, leaving many singles, divorcees, or widows feeling isolated. However, for those navigating the season alone, a growing movement aims to redefine the holiday spirit.

Inspired by her own experience of loneliness during Christmas a few years ago, Olive Emodi, the founder of Olive’s Singles Network, TV personality, event compère, and lawyer, decided to take action. On December 18, 2023, she hosted the second edition of the *Olives Singles PJ Party* at The Jewel Aieda in Lagos, offering a heartwarming alternative to the typical holiday blues.

The event brought together 22 single (unmarried, divorced, and widowed) women, who were invited to embrace the season with a sense of community and renewal, through a fun-filled, pyjama-themed photoshoot.

The day was packed with pampering and empowerment. The ladies were treated to professional makeup sessions, photoshoots, complimentary pyjamas, and gift bags. The atmosphere was filled with joy, laughter, music, and plenty of food and drinks.

But the excitement didn’t end there—attendees were pleasantly surprised when a few familiar faces from the entertainment world showed up to add even more colour to the day. Global superstar Tems, YouTube sensation Korty EO, and online personality The Real Femi joined the festivities, injecting even more energy and excitement into the already lively event.

Beyond the fun, the event also offered valuable insights for personal growth and healing. Guest speakers included Oluwatoyin Olusanya-Onadele, who shared wisdom on *managing finances*, Ayo Mario-Ese of Arise TV, and Steph Busari of CNN, both of whom shared personal stories about making the best of their single seasons. Evelle wrapped up the event beautifully with a heartfelt musical performance.

The day ended with a powerful prayer session and gift-giving that elicited hugs and tears. The event wasn’t just about the festive experience; it was a reminder that life’s most fulfilling moments can come when we embrace our journeys—whether alone or with others.

As the event came to a close, the attendees expressed deep gratitude for the warmth and connection they experienced. Many of the women forged new friendships and shared how the event reignited their own “Christmas spirit,” reminding them that this season is not just about family, but about community, healing, and growth.

The second chapter of the “Be the Standout Swift” campaign celebrates the global rise and acceptance of Afrobeats and highlights the parallels with Davido in his quest to inspire others to succeed on their own terms.

Martell, one of the oldest of the great cognac houses, kicks off the second chapter of its 2021 award-winning ‘Be the Standout Swift’ campaign with singer, songwriter, and Grammy-nominated superstar, Davido. Celebrating the rise of Afrobeats, this new chapter looks to honour and inspire those who have stayed authentic to their craft, resilient on their journey, and are taking others along with them.

To launch this chapter of the campaign, Martell has unveiled a new film starring Davido as the lead character and brought to life by award-winning director, Meji Alabi, who also shot the first campaign film. The plot is inspired by Davido’s decade-long contribution to Afrobeats, its critical acclaim, and its success.

The film celebrates the journey of Afrobeats and its global acceptance, spotlighting those who have paved the way, or contributed to its continued success today. Its global success is “no accident”. With courage, resilience, and audacity, it has evolved beyond just a music genre, but a cultural beacon the world celebrates today.

Music legend and Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, is paid homage in the film for the pivotal role he played in birthing and inspiring what is Afrobeats today. Fela, whose determination to do things on his own terms, continues to inspire those like Davido who are embracing this spirit of audacity by being resilient enough to break down barriers, believe in themselves, and pave the way for the next generation.

The ASTRA Fellowship, a prestigious leadership and mentorship program founded by Bode Pedro, CEO of Casava, celebrated the graduation of 50 fellows from its 2024 Productivity Accelerator Program. Held in partnership with United Way Greater Nigeria, the 2024 cohort equipped selected startups and small businesses with the skills and resources needed to drive innovation and accelerate growth

After weeks of intensive workshops and seminars, the graduation ceremony was held in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event drew a diverse crowd of students, faculty, tech enthusiasts, business leaders, and industry experts. Distinguished guests included Joseph Olofinsola (Board Chairman of United Way Greater Nigeria and Partner at Deloitte), Sheila Ojei (Country Manager at African Management Institute and United Way Greater Nigeria Board member), Deola Durodola (Executive Director of United Way Greater Nigeria), Kenneth Ikenwa (Lecturer at the University of Lagos and Founder of KIGibbor Consulting); Sanmi Olukanmi (Co-founder and CEO of Shekel Mobility); and General Manager of Vibranium Valley, Moyosore Asubiojo; amongst other prominent academics and business leaders. 

“We are committed to providing comprehensive training, mentorship, and resources to entrepreneurs, offering substantial economic opportunities for their businesses,” said Bode Pedro, the visionary founder of ASTRA Fellowship. “This approach not only fuels sustainability but also enables SMEs to create wealth.”

“I implore you to step only into the world, embarking on your journey, one task, one project, one outcome at a time,” he added, encouraging the fellows. 

Keynote speaker Kayode Ariyo, CEO of Global Accelerex Limited, highlighted the critical role of innovation in driving economic growth. He observed that despite Nigeria’s struggling economy, the start-up ecosystem remains a hub for innovation. He charged the fellows to push boundaries, embrace challenges, and remain unwavering in their pursuit of innovation. He noted that though

“the journey ahead may be tough, with determination, anything is possible.” 

Bamidele Wale-Oshinowo, Senior Lecturer at the University of Lagos and lead professor at ASTRA Fellowship, congratulated the 2024 cohort for their dedication.

“Don’t keep thinking about perfection. Think about the vision and move with it because success is really about creating value,” he advised. 

The event also featured a startup pitch competition, with Ifunanya Igweze of Preggify securing the top prize of N1 million. Other winners included Yvonne Femi Adewumi of Giftelleo Limited and Verse Hough of Gnergy Technologies, who won N750,000 and N500,000, respectively. Notably, Ikeokpara Chinelo, founder of Chikalis Logistics, secured a mouthwatering N50 million investment from Sanmi Olukanmi, CEO of Shekel Mobility.

The ASTRA Fellowship Leadership Program is accredited to equip tech innovators and young startup founders with essential leadership, management, tech, and business strategy skills for career and personal development.

In a collaborative effort to spread holiday cheer, Yeloto, led by Executive Director Dr. Yemi Olawaiye, partnered with Symphony of Praise (SOP) to bring joy to numerous families in Amuwo Odofin as Christmas approaches.

The event tagged “Food Box Project” is a charity initiative of Symphony of Praise and powered by Yeloto. Over five hundred families, from different communities across Amuwo Odofin local government area were gifted Food Boxes that would serve them for the yuletide. Each Food Box is packed with Food and Groceries.

At different times, Dr Yemi Olawaiye, (ably represented by Sunkanmi Idowu) of Yeloto and Seun Ayeni of SOP took time to highlight the values of both organizations and the benefits of the partnership, as one that serves humanity’s greatest good.

Against the backdrop of stampedes that characterised recent charity events in the country, Seyi Adeyemo, a community leader in Amuwo Odofin, commended the quality of decorum and order that defined the Food Box Project while appreciating the charity gestures of Yeloto and Symphony of Praise (SOP).

Adding to the festive atmosphere, renowned actor Daniel Etim Effiong graced the event. He commended Yeloto Incorporated for their initiative and entertained the beneficiaries with dance games, while also showing his appreciation for his fans by distributing cash gifts.

The event was attended by community leaders and stakeholders, who expressed appreciation for the continued organization of the annual event despite the challenging economic climate.

Several beneficiaries also shared their positive experiences from previous years, highlighting the ongoing impact of the initiative.

The Food Box Project 2024 concluded with a festive atmosphere, featuring raffle draws, music, and entertainment. This initiative was undertaken by the Yeloto African Children Foundation, an organization founded by Dr. Yemi Olawaiye, which is dedicated to improving the overall well-being of children across Africa.

Art has always been a way for me to process life’s complexities, he says. This exhibition is a reflection of who I am, where I’ve been, and where I’m headed.

The 2024 Abuja Guards Polo Club Tournament came to a close after nearly two weeks of exhilarating action. Held from December 4th to 15th at the Nigerian Army Polo Resort, Mambila Barracks, Asokoro, Abuja, the tournament delivered outstanding performances, fierce competition, and moments of true sportsmanship.

The event’s grand finale featured MAX Air claiming the Legislative Shield Trophy, defeating STL with a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Throughout the tournament, the players demonstrated exceptional skill, captivating the audience with their impressive performances and unrelenting determination on the field.

In another tightly contested electrifying showdown for the Minister’s Cup, FK3 grazed past Musaco with a narrow 6-5 victory. The match carried an extra layer of excitement, as brothers Abubakar Aminu (FK3) and Ahmed Aminu (Musaco) competed on opposite sides in a game that truly embodied sibling rivalry at its finest. Abubakar Aminu applauded his brother after the game, noting,

2024 has been a landmark year for MAC Cosmetics, marked by collaborations that brought beauty and fashion together in unparalleled ways. As a driving force behind innovative and sustainable practices, MAC partnered with leading designers and iconic events, cementing its role as a pioneer in artistry and inclusivity.

The series of partnerships began with the Lagos Canvas event on September 3. Pioneered by Mo Abudu, the event celebrated Lagos’s dynamic culture through art, music, food, and fashion. MAC provided luminous, skin-focused makeup looks, complementing the models’ natural features and adding a refined touch to the vibrant runway presentation.

Later in the month, MAC joined forces with Banke Kuku to unveil her highly anticipated SS25 Oceans Collection. The collaboration began with a two-day shoot on September 30 at La Campagne Tropicana, captured by renowned photographer Kelechi Amadiobi.

It was followed by a virtual press conference with leading publications on October 11 during which Banke Kuku shared her vision for the collection. The pinnacle of this partnership was the Oceans Front Row event on October 18 at the Royal Box in Victoria Island. MAC’s artistry brought the ocean-inspired designs to life, captivating an exclusive audience that included influential figures like Mo Abudu, Toke Makinwa, and Her Excellency Ambassador Professor Olufolake Abdulrazaq.

On October 27, MAC took center stage at two prominent SS25 collections, Emmy Kasbit’s and Imad Eduso, showcasing versatility in bringing distinct creative visions to life. At Emmy Kasbit’s runway, MAC’s daring yet refined makeup looks elevated the collection’s narrative of modern tailoring, enhancing the powerful impact of each design. Simultaneously, MAC partnered with Imad Eduso, where the butterfly-inspired collection symbolizing faith, resilience, and renewal was elevated.

The celebration of artistry continued into November with partnerships that spotlighted iconic designers Tiffany Amber on November 2 and Jewel by Lisa on November 9. For both events, the MAC Cosmetics team tailored makeup looks to enhance the distinct styles and creative expressions of these celebrated designers.

MAC’s partnership with Lanre Da Silva also showcased its expertise during the SS25 Eternal Glamour women’s collection on November 17. The collection, a true celebration of bold designs and the brilliance of Nigeria’s creative industry, was enhanced by MAC’s artistry, which infused each look with glamour and elegance.

As MAC’s final contribution to the series of collaborations, their partnership with Future Face Africa by Elizabeth Isiorho, exemplified the brand’s commitment to nurturing young African models and propeling them onto global stages. MAC Cosmetics was pivotal during this year’s showcase, with looks that emphasized individuality and the expressive aspirations of the next generation.

The 6th edition of the highly anticipated Art of Technology (AOT) Lagos conference organized by the Eko Innovation Centre and powered by the Lagos State Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, held recently at the prestigious Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Themed “The AI Revolution: Transforming Lagos into Africa’s Digital Powerhouse,” the event brought together leading voices in technology, policy, and enterprise to explore the immense potential of artificial intelligence and its applications in reshaping the future of Lagos and Africa at large.

In his address at the occasion, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the Lagos State government has created an enabling environment for technology innovation to thrive in the state, through its deliberate policies and investments. The enabling environment, according to him, spurred the Lagos-based startups to raise over $1.2 billion, which is 75 per cent of all startup investments in Nigeria in 2023.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said:

“Through deliberate policies and investments, we have created an enabling environment that fosters innovation and positioned Lagos as a global player in the technology value chain. The achievements reflect the ingenuity of our people and our unwavering commitment to innovation. But we must continue to build on this foundation to secure our position as a leader in the global tech ecosystem.”

Delivering a keynote paper at the event, Managing Director, Enterprise Business Group at Huawei Technologies, Terrens Wu, said from the first growth curve of the informatization age, human society has achieved ubiquitous interconnection, connecting a large number of users and causing a traffic explosion.

“This has accelerated the demand for digital transformation in human society and spawned a second growth curve with 5G and cloud as the main engines. At present, the third growth curve leading the intelligent world is ready to take place, and human society is entering a new era of comprehensive intelligence,” Wu said.

According to him, the demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing power is increasing rapidly. “By the end of this year, we expect that the demand for AI computing power may exceed the demand for general computing power, he said, adding that building an elastic and efficient multi-calculation infrastructure with optimal AI computing power, which is about building an AI native cloud infrastructure, is the key to AI development.”

Earlier in his welcome address, Tubosun Alake, Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology for Lagos State emphasized Lagos’ commitment to becoming a global leader in digital transformation and technological innovation, describing the state as the bridge between Africa and the opportunities of a digital economy.

Additionally, Victor Afolabi, Curator and Convener of the Art of Technology and Founder of the Eko Innovation Centre say events like AoT continue to reinforce Lagos’ position as the gateway to Africa’s digital transformation.

“The focus on AI is in tune with the global changing dynamics and how AI is playing a key role in this.”

The first plenary session for the event, aptly titled “The AI Revolution: Transforming Lagos into Africa’s Digital Powerhouse,” was moderated by Seyi Akindeinde, Founder of Hyperspace Technologies, the panel brought together thought leaders such as Dr. Obadare Peter Adewale, Chief Visionary Officer at Digital Encode; Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hamzat; Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Co-founder and Founding CEO of Accelerate Africa; Dr. Vincent O. Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission; and Gbemisola Aruwayo-Obe, Country General Manager and Technology Leader for West Africa at IBM.

The second plenary session, titled “Beyond the Hype: Preparing Africa’s Infrastructure and Workforce for the Rise of AI,” continued the momentum. Moderated by; Feyisayo Alayande, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, the panel featured influential speakers including,

  • Olugbolahan Olusanya, Africa Sales and Growth Director at TeKnowledge;
  • Femi Osinubi, Partner and Consulting & Risk Services Leader for West Africa at PwC;
  • Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta;
  • Folashade Ambrose Medebem, Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment for Lagos State;
  • and Bunmi Akinyemiju, Cofounder of Venture Garden Group.

This session addressed Africa’s readiness to adopt AI on a large scale and the need for strategic investments in infrastructure, education, and cross-sector collaborations. Panelists also highlighted the role of policy frameworks in fostering innovation while ensuring equitable access to AI-driven opportunities.

The third plenary session, “Stay Woke: Balancing Data, Privacy, and Ethics in Nigeria’s Digital Hustle,” brought to the fore the ethical implications of AI adoption. Moderated by Omoruyi Edoigiawerie, Founder and Chief Servant at EandCLegal.

The panel featured such speakers as;

  • Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, Founder and CEO of Rise Networks;
  • Dr. Bayo Adekanmbi, Founder of Data Science Nigeria;
  • Jimoh Adetunji Wasiu, Head of Applications Department at the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology;
  • and Abimbola Owoeye, Country Lead for Dell Technologies Nigeria.

The conversation revolved around the critical need for ethical guardrails in AI deployment, with panelists agreeing that a data-driven future must prioritize transparency and accountability to safeguard public trust.

There were also breakout sessions that created more intimate environments for participants to explore deeper into specific topics. These sessions tackled themes such as “AI in Nigeria’s Workforce: Job Creator or Job Disruptor?” and “AI for Social Good: Using Data to Solve Lagos’ Most Pressing Social Issues.”

The discussions were led by a diverse mix of industry leaders, startup founders, and academic experts, offering actionable insights and case studies. The breakout sessions were highly interactive, with participants exchanging ideas and forging connections that could shape the future of AI implementation in Nigeria.

The day’s programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Engr. Ibilola Kasunmu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology for Lagos State. Her heartfelt gratitude extended to all stakeholders, sponsors, and participants who contributed to the success of AOT Lagos 6.0.
