On Tuesday, 7th January, John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as Ghana’s president at Black Star Square in Accra.

At the swearing-in-ceremony, he looked ready to take the oath of office in a white agbada with kente fabric detailing on the hemlines, paired with a matching kente cap. The outfit combined tradition and simplicity, reflecting the significance of the occasion. A key moment during the ceremony was when he lifted the State Sword, symbolising his authority as Commander-in-Chief.

Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who made history as Ghana’s first female vice president rocked a print A-line skirt paired with a pink jacket featuring sequinned details on the sleeves, an understated yet elegant look for the occasion.

The ceremony which was well attended by several African leaders including Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a celebration of Ghanaian culture and tradition, with both leaders embodying the dignity of the event through their attire.

Almost two weeks after most of the world celebrated Christmas, taking down their trees and packing up decorations for the next festive season, one country—Ethiopia—was just marking its own Christmas celebration yesterday.

In Ethiopia, Christmas, or Genna as it’s locally called, starts on Christmas Eve with a breathtaking candlelight service. On Monday evening, 6 January 2025, tens of thousands of worshippers gathered at the Bole Medhan Alem Church in Addis Ababa, the largest cathedral in Ethiopia and the second largest in Africa. Similar candlelight ceremonies also took place in churches across the country, as faithful worshippers flocked to their nearest place of worship.

Dressed in white traditional attire—the women in flowing, ankle-length dresses adorned with embroidery or lace, and men clad in long shirts—the worshippers joined a moving procession around the church’s circumference, holding lit candles. The air was filled with the sounds of a choir and the melodies of traditional instruments, creating an enchanting atmosphere as they followed the priest. The priest, in turn, blessed worshippers as he made his way through the congregation.

This beautiful tradition, a longstanding one in the world’s oldest independent African nation, has become one of Ethiopia’s most cherished religious expressions, drawing tourists from around the world to witness the spectacular communal celebration. It is often regarded as one of the most spectacular communal celebrations anywhere in the world.

Unlike the globally recognised 25 December, Ethiopians celebrate Christmas, or Genna/Ganna as it is locally called, on 7 January. This difference stems from their use of the Julian calendar, as practised by the Coptic Orthodox Church, instead of the Gregorian calendar adopted by much of the world. According to the Julian calendar, 7 January marks the day of Jesus Christ’s birth.

So, what does Christmas Day in Ethiopia look like?

For many, it starts with food! While Nigerians might serve smoky jollof rice with fried goat, chicken or turkey, Ethiopians serve Doro Wat as their quintessential Christmas dish. This rich, spicy stew made with chicken, vegetables, and whole boiled eggs is enjoyed with injera, a soft, sourdough flatbread that doubles as a utensil for scooping up the stew. For drinks, a special barley-based beverage is brewed, adding to the culinary festivities.

But the celebrations don’t end at the table. Ethiopians also engage in traditional games, such as Ye Genna Chewata, a hockey-like sport played with a wooden ball and curved sticks. History has it that the game originated from the joy of shepherds who, on hearing the news of Christ’s birth, began tossing objects into the air with their sticks.

Another beloved activity, though much more daring, is yeferas guks, a horseback sport where men throw ceremonial lances at each other in a test of skill and courage.

Liz Sanya, a young and visionary fashion designer, has just completed her Guinness World Record attempt for the World’s Largest Sandal!

Her creation, a striking pink clog measuring an impressive 4.8 metres (15 feet 9 inches) in length, was brought to life over the span of three days in Lagos. The remarkable feat was supported by a host of stars and well-wishers, including music artistes Mayorkun, Pheelz, P.Priime, Taves, music entrepreneur Bizzle Osikoya, filmmaker Korty, and many others who cheered her on and celebrated her ambition.

Liz’s journey began on 2nd January at 5 p.m. and concluded on the 4th, with the process taking a dedicated 72 hours to complete. Reflecting on her drive for innovation and excellence, Liz shared her passion for her craft, stating:

I’ll never be able to put into words what any of this means to me, I started designing shoes when I was 12 and by 14 I was selling them to fund a ‘habit’ I couldn’t afford. None of this has been possible without the support and compassion of the people who see me and believe in my vision. Ibadan… where I was born. Lagos where I was inspired. It was only right to come back home and prove it. 1 world record to beat, within 72hrs…

Super Eagles’ striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal of the season to help Nottingham Forest secure a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening. The 27-year-old forward’s goal marked a moment of redemption, coming 324 days after he had been sidelined due to a lengthy injury.

Coming on as a substitute in the 88th minute, Taiwo wasted no time making an impact. In stoppage time, he netted with a well-placed assist from Morgan Gibbs–White, sealing the win and adding to Nottingham Forest’s strong start to 2025.

The victory extended their unbeaten run to six consecutive Premier League wins, keeping them in third place on the Premier League table, level on 40 points with second-placed Arsenal and just six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

After his goal, Taiwo was visibly emotional, dropping to his knees in celebration. He covered his face with his shin pads, which bore the Bible verse James 1:17: “Every good and perfect gift is from above.”

The Federal Government has announced plans to implement surveillance measures for inbound passengers from China, following reports of a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus raising global attention almost five years after the first news of COVID-19.

Dr John Oladejo of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed the government’s proactive stance, stating: “The Federal Government will activate surveillance measures, like quarantine, for passengers coming in from China.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the World Health Organisation (WHO) noted: “There has been a recent rise in acute respiratory infections, but the overall scale and intensity of respiratory diseases in China this year are lower than last year.”

While Chinese health officials have not officially linked the surge in respiratory infections to HMPV, the virus has been highlighted as a growing concern globally. In the United States, cases of HMPV have steadily risen since November 2024, with 1.94% of weekly tests returning positive as of late December, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

For most people, HMPV causes cold-like symptoms, but in rare cases, it can lead to severe respiratory conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in high-risk groups. Unlike COVID-19, there is no antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, though experts stress it is unlikely to spark a global pandemic.

Key Differences Between HMPV and COVID-19

Both HMPV and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory illnesses with similar symptoms, including coughing, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. However, HMPV is seasonal, typically appearing in winter and spring, whereas COVID-19 has shown year-round transmission due to emerging variants.

Additionally, while COVID-19 has vaccines and antiviral therapies, HMPV is managed through preventive hygiene and supportive care.

Symptoms of HMPV

HMPV symptoms are often mild but can escalate in vulnerable groups. Common symptoms include:

• Cough
• Fever
• Nasal congestion
• Shortness of breath
• Vomitting

In severe cases, HMPV can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in infants, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Who Is at Risk?

Although anyone can contract HMPV, the following groups are at higher risk of severe outcomes:

• Infants and children under five
• Adults over 65
• Individuals with weakend immune systems (e.g., due to cancer, HIV, or organ transplants)
• People with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma or COPD

How HMPV Spreads

HMPV spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. You can become exposed by:

• Touching your mouth, nose, or eyes after contact with infected surfaces
• Inhaling droplets from sneezes or coughs
• Close physical contact, such as handshakes

Temi Otedola usually keeps things private, but this time, she took to Instagram to reflect on her 10-year journey in the creative industry. Ten years ago, at just 17, she launched jtofashion.com, a passion project she started while juggling university classes and photoshoots.

Fast forward to today, and Temi’s journey has been nothing short of transformative. From fashion blogging to acting, singing, creative direction, and even podcasting, she’s tried it all. But as she reflected, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

There was also so much trial and error in my journey: failed projects, imposter syndrome, no’s, and many bad outfits.

Still, she pushed through. And now, she’s proud—not just of the achievements, but of the resilience and consistency it took to get here.

I wish I could hug that girl and tell her all the hard work would pay off. I find it really hard to be proud of my accomplishments because often careers in online media are seen as only glamorous. Nobody but you sees the 10,000 hours of work behind the scenes.

But I am DAMN proud of myself. I never usually give myself the credit, but this first week of 2025, I’ve been a bit nostalgic. I’ve looked back over the countless photoshoots, rehearsals, emails, meetings, pitches, auditions, 5am call times, and missed opportunities. I’m proud of myself for never giving up on my dreams and staying consistent throughout my 20s.

Thanks goes to God. I also couldn’t have done this without all of you guys—my family, partner, team, friends, mentors, teachers, brands, collaborators, and everyone who has supported my dreams so far.

From starting out in the Nigerian creative scene to representing Africa on a global stage, Temi has broken barriers, including becoming the first African digital ambassador for L’Oréal Paris.

Other recipients included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U2 frontman and humanitarian Bono, renowned fashion designer Ralph Lauren, “Science Guy” Bill Nye, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, humanitarian chef José Andrés, conservationist Jane Goodall, and international football star Lionel Messi, among others.

Then came Christmas Day, where you were up and about, making sure everyone had a great time, tidying up after guests, and doing a lot of “peopling.” By the time you finally hit the bed, exhaustion had taken its toll, leaving you too tired for proper rest.

Now, Christmas has come and gone until next year. You may not have had a completely stress-free holiday, but there are things you can do to manage post-holiday fatigue and prepare for the New Year celebrations. Admitting you need a break—and finding time to unwind—is easier said than done. But Christmas is all about joy and love, and you can still bask in that joy while taking care of yourself.

Here are our best tips to help you recharge:

Listen to Your Body

Isn’t it amazing how the body works? When it’s hungry, it signals for food; when it’s tired, it asks for rest. If you’re experiencing aching muscles, headaches, sluggishness, or feeling “off,” that’s your body speaking to you. Listen to it—and don’t ignore it.

Your body is a genius. It wants to take care of you, so let it.

What can you do? Aching muscles? Soak in a warm bath. Persistent tiredness? Get an early night. Overwhelmed by people? Set aside some time for guilt-free relaxation—whatever that means to you. It could be snuggling under a blanket, plugging into your favourite playlist, and drifting into dreamland. Whatever you do, make time for yourself.

Recognise You Need Help

If you’ve listened to your body and tried the above but still feel off, the next step is recognising that you might need help. Don’t hesitate to ask family or friends for support. It doesn’t have to be a big ask—it could be as simple as requesting some quiet time to recharge, delegating tasks like tidying up, or asking them to help with errands.

Sharing the load creates space for you to focus on yourself, which is essential for your well-being.

Re-establish Healthy Routines

The festive period often comes with indulgent eating and drinking—why not? But now that Christmas is over and the New Year is approaching, it’s a great time to reset.

Start by drinking more water and swapping fizzy drinks for nourishing options. Incorporate healthier food choices like salads and fruits into your meals.

Healthy routines go beyond food. Prioritise going to bed early and getting at least eight hours of sleep. Introduce light exercise into your day—a 30-minute walk or even a 10-minute jump rope session can leave you feeling rejuvenated and energised.

Say No

This can feel tricky, especially during the festive season when everyone seems to need your attention—especially if you’re hosting. But remember: you can’t please everyone.

If you’re not up for attending an event or activity, feel free to decline. What’s the worst that could happen? Prioritise your well-being and let go of the pressure to make everyone happy. Saying no can also save you from unnecessary spending and stress.

Ending the year with immense GRATITUDE…..

I decided to throw a praise breakfast with a small group of friends.

2024, the “no Gree for anybody year”. Funny, even the devil heard us all so loud and decided not to gree for us but we serve a living GOD.

It was a GOOD year because God is good. I have chosen to only call 2024 GOOD. Everything with God is good and regardless of how life was lifing, God was Godding too and where there was a casting down, our heads were lifted high, Sooo high.

Thank you for saving us, thank you for keeping every single promise, I tore up my prayer requests at some point in this same year but ABBA you heard it all and kept every single promise to me.

Thank you for not seeing me like the world sees me, thank you for not judging me. I have brought your children together cos my own KPI is to know God and let the world he has given me experience him so this is how we go into 2025.

It’s been an enlightening experience that has reshaped my understanding of my capabilities.”

On Staying Focused During Hard Times 

“Honestly, I just stay focused and hopeful. I believe that positivity can be a powerful tool, and those who know me can attest to my optimistic outlook, even in challenging situations. I make a conscious effort to keep my faith high and remind myself that setbacks are often just stepping stones to success.

I’m naturally a bit of a risk-taker, which means I’m comfortable navigating uncertainty. This mindset helps me embrace challenges rather than shy away from them, allowing me to stay motivated and resilient no matter what I encounter.”

On Her Journey and Growth 

“When I reflect on my journey from where I started to where I am now, I feel an immense sense of pride in my bravery and the risks I’ve taken along the way to get here.. Growing up in South London, I often dreamed of the life I now lead. Infact, I’ve probably suppressed my very own dreams and ambitions.

Being able to work in the capacity I do with my partner, who happens to be one of the most talented musicians while being able to raise a family is one of the biggest blessings. As I turned 40, I experienced extreme anxiety, prompting me to ask myself a pivotal question: If you could ask your younger self where you would be at 40, what would you say?

My answer would be a resounding affirmation that I am exactly where I envisioned myself. This realisation empowered me to embrace my journey fully, and since then, I’ve never looked back. I take pride in not only achieving my dreams but also in the courage it took to pursue them relentlessly.”

It’s Tems’ final shows of the year in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, and as always, the superstar showed up looking stunning.

Rocking two gliterring outfits for both shows, the first look is a chic jumpsuit with gloves, featuring a bralette with a halter neckline. The second is a black long-sleeve gown, also shimmering in glitter. Each outfit perfectly accentuates and flatters her figure beautifully.

Of course, her look isn’t complete without her signature makeup, featruing high slanted eyebrows and sultry eyes.  Her cornrow braids added the perfect finishing touch, and the accessories she chose made just as much of a statement as the outfits themselves.

Tems also recently dropped her music video for “Get It Right” featuring Asake, adding to her wrap-up for the year.

Throughout her expansive career in media—spanning filmmaking, visual storytelling, and TV leadership—Busola Komolafe has consistently championed one mission: projecting authentic African stories to a global audience.

Not just any African stories, though. Busola is deeply committed to showcasing the rich, positive, and multifaceted narratives that highlight the continent’s beauty and complexity. She believes African stories are compelling because they blend cultural richness with unique perspectives. “African stories offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before—whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions,” she explains. “At the same time, these stories touch on universal themes like love, family, and ambition, which resonate across cultures. It’s this combination of specificity and universality that makes African storytelling so powerful.”

For decades, African storytelling in films has often been told by outsiders, perpetuating stereotypes and negative narratives. Studies reveal that many of these portrayals have used Africa and its people merely as resources to create distorted images that are far removed from the continent’s realities. But the tide is changing. With more Africans stepping forward to tell their own stories, a new era is emerging—one that dismantles stereotypes and amplifies the diversity and beauty of the African experience.

Busola is a key player in this movement. Beyond her work as a storyteller, she now holds a prestigious position as an Active Member of the Emmy Awards Television Academy. For Busola, this achievement is not just personal—it’s a win for every creative working tirelessly to amplify African voices. “This is validation of years of dedication to storytelling and creative work,” she says.

Despite her busy schedule, Busola graciously took the time to share her journey with us. She reflected on the moments that shaped her passion for storytelling and outlined her plans as a member of the Academy. These include highlighting the vibrancy and depth of Nollywood and advocating for the recognition of African storytelling within the global television landscape.

Hi Busola, it’s great to have you speak with us. How are you doing?

I’m doing great, thank you! It’s a busy but rewarding time, and I’m excited to be sharing this moment with you and your readers.

Congratulations on your selection as an Active Member of the Emmy Awards Television Academy. What was the first thought that crossed your mind when you got the news?

Thank you so much! The first thought that crossed my mind was sheer gratitude. It felt surreal, like a validation of the years of dedication to storytelling and creative work. I remember thinking, “Wow, this is a recognition not just for me but for the entire African creative community.”

This achievement is not only a personal milestone but a big moment for Nigerian and African creatives breaking into global spaces. How does it feel to represent such a vibrant creative community?

It’s an incredible honour and responsibility. Nigerian and African creatives bring such unique perspectives and energy to storytelling, and being in a position to advocate for that on a global stage feels like a privilege. It’s a testament to the richness of our cultures and the power of our narratives. This is not just my win it’s a win for every creative out there working tirelessly to tell our stories.

Your journey spans filmmaking and TV production, leading to this incredible opportunity with the Television Academy. Was there a defining moment that shaped your passion for storytelling?

Growing up without so many siblings, TV became my closest companion. In a quiet household where not so many kids running around, the presence of a TV set transformed my world. I remember the anticipation of waiting for the local TV station to come on at 4 p.m. The moment the screen lit up, the entire house came alive. It was magical, and even as a child, I could see how captivated my parents were by my fascination with TV content.

My mum nurtured this passion by buying me Bollywood/Hollywood films, and I would immerse myself completely in those stories. It sparked something profound in me, even as a little girl. I realised that I wanted to be part of the magic that TV brings, the kind of magic that fills a quiet living room with life and offers an escape for anyone watching. From that young age, I knew I wanted to create those moments, to be part of the world that gave others the joy and companionship TV gave me as a little girl.

As a TV executive, you’ve worked on impactful projects. Which one has challenged you creatively or stayed with you the most?

The project that challenged me the most and has stayed with me is my short film “Phantom.” It was my first foray into filmmaking after years of working primarily on reality shows. The story came to me, and I felt a deep need to tell it, even though it was a significant departure from the kinds of projects I had worked on before. It was also my first time directing a film, and I deliberately chose to tackle a complex, impactful narrative, a psychological thriller that delved into deep, thought-provoking themes. It wasn’t a “safe” or easy story for a debut.

I vividly remember how nervous I was the morning of the shoot. I prayed and committed the entire production to God, asking for guidance and for the Holy Spirit to take control. That day marked a creative leap for me, and though it was a challenge, it was a beautiful and rewarding one.

The effort paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined. “Phantom” went on to earn selections at seven international film festivals, received two prestigious nominations in New York and Los Angeles, and won multiple awards, including Best Short Film Nigeria at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival and Best African Film at the International World Film Awards. For a first attempt at filmmaking, it was both a personal and professional milestone.

“Phantom” didn’t just challenge me creatively; it shaped me into the award-winning filmmaker I am today. Looking back, I’m proud of the risks I took and grateful for the journey.

African stories are gaining global recognition like never before. What do you think makes our storytelling so compelling, and how can this momentum be sustained?

African stories are deeply compelling because they are rich in culture and unique in their perspectives. They offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions. At the same time, these stories touch on universal themes like love, family, and ambition, which resonate across cultures. It’s this combination of specificity and universality that makes African storytelling so powerful.

To sustain this momentum, we need to focus on developing a strong industry structure. We have incredible talent, but for the industry to thrive long-term, we must build a system that supports consistent, high-quality output. This includes investing in training, funding, and infrastructure, as well as fostering partnerships that help us access global markets.

Now that you’re an Emmy voter, how do you plan to use your platform to champion diverse voices in television?

As an Emmy voter, my primary responsibility is to ensure that excellence and representation are recognised and celebrated. With my vote, I have the power to advocate for stories and creators that reflect the diversity of voices and perspectives in the television industry, including those from Africa and other underrepresented regions. My focus will be on honouring content that embodies exceptional storytelling and innovation, while also contributing to the broader recognition of diverse narratives in global television.

Beyond voting, how do you see your role in the Television Academy helping to amplify Nigerian and African stories to a global audience?

Being part of the Television Academy allows me to serve as a bridge, connecting global audiences to the richness of Nigerian and African stories. Through enlightenment and advocacy I can help highlight the vibrancy and depth of Nollywood, showcasing its cultural significance and creative impact. My role is to advocate for the recognition of African storytelling within the global television landscape, opening minds to the beauty and diversity of our narratives.

When you’re not working, which shows or creators do you enjoy watching? Do their stories influence your creative vision in any way?

Even though their stories have not influenced my creative vision, I admire the work of Biyi Bandele (may he rest in peace). His exceptional directing in the film, “Half of a Yellow Sun” left a good mark on Nigerian cinema. I also like the work of BB Sasore. I think he’s one of Nigeria’s brilliant storytellers, bringing depth and creativity to his projects. Abby Ajayi is also one great writer even though most of her works is in Hollywood.

Shonda Rhimes for her exceptional story world-building and how intricately she crafts her characters in her TV series. She creates layered, multifaceted characters that feel real.

What’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?

There’s so much more to come, and I’m truly excited about the journey ahead. This is such a pivotal time for African creatives. While I can’t reveal too much just yet, I’ll say this: watch this space. The future is bright, and I’m honoured to be part of this wave of African excellence.

There are young filmmakers reading this interview and thinking, “I’d like to be in a global space like this too.” What advice would you give to them as they work towards that dream?

The first thing I’d like to say is, there’s no such thing as an overnight success. What may appear as an overnight breakthrough often takes years of challenges, growth, being knocked down, rising up again, staying consistent, and staying true to your journey. It’s hard work, dedication, and perseverance over time that bring success.

So, my advice is to stay the course. Know exactly what your goals and purpose are. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” That “why” is what will drive you, keep you motivated during tough times, and remind you why you started.

Believe in your voice and the uniqueness of your perspective. Excellence should be your standard in everything you do. Don’t look for shortcuts or the easiest way to achieve your dreams. Instead, focus on the path that prioritises quality and authenticity. That’s what will make you stand out.

Finally, surround yourself with mentors and people who inspire and challenge you. Learn from their journeys, take advice, and build relationships that will help you grow. Remember, success is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, stay determined, and keep striving for greatness.
