Morris Chestnut and his wife of three decades, Pamela turned heads at the 82nd Golden Globes, serving up a dose of Hollywood glamour with a touch of African elegance.

Pamela, a vision in black velvet, stole the show in a stunning creation by Nigerian designer Erica Moore. The sultry mermaid dress showcased Moore’s exquisite craftsmanship on the global stage.

Pamela was a paragon with flawlessly glowing skin, a sleek ponytail, and a subtle facebeat. She had three (3) ear piercings clad in gem studs matching her resplendent clutch. See below:

Morris, looking dapper as ever, opted for a custom look from GRAY. The striking orange suit with a contrasting black button was elegantly styled with a pair of black shoes. Styled by J.Bolin, Morris layered his suit with a matching shirt and tie. The vibrant hue perfectly complemented his complexion, showcasing the power of Melanin.

The handsome heartthrob once again proved that age is just a number, showcasing his timeless style and undeniable charm.

Liz Sanya, a young and visionary fashion designer, has just completed her Guinness World Record attempt for the World’s Largest Sandal!

Her creation, a striking pink clog measuring an impressive 4.8 metres (15 feet 9 inches) in length, was brought to life over the span of three days in Lagos. The remarkable feat was supported by a host of stars and well-wishers, including music artistes Mayorkun, Pheelz, P.Priime, Taves, music entrepreneur Bizzle Osikoya, filmmaker Korty, and many others who cheered her on and celebrated her ambition.

Liz’s journey began on 2nd January at 5 p.m. and concluded on the 4th, with the process taking a dedicated 72 hours to complete. Reflecting on her drive for innovation and excellence, Liz shared her passion for her craft, stating:

I’ll never be able to put into words what any of this means to me, I started designing shoes when I was 12 and by 14 I was selling them to fund a ‘habit’ I couldn’t afford. None of this has been possible without the support and compassion of the people who see me and believe in my vision. Ibadan… where I was born. Lagos where I was inspired. It was only right to come back home and prove it. 1 world record to beat, within 72hrs…

Super Eagles’ striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal of the season to help Nottingham Forest secure a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday evening. The 27-year-old forward’s goal marked a moment of redemption, coming 324 days after he had been sidelined due to a lengthy injury.

Coming on as a substitute in the 88th minute, Taiwo wasted no time making an impact. In stoppage time, he netted with a well-placed assist from Morgan GibbsWhite, sealing the win and adding to Nottingham Forest’s strong start to 2025.

The victory extended their unbeaten run to six consecutive Premier League wins, keeping them in third place on the Premier League table, level on 40 points with second-placed Arsenal and just six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

After his goal, Taiwo was visibly emotional, dropping to his knees in celebration. He covered his face with his shin pads, which bore the Bible verse James 1:17: “Every good and perfect gift is from above.”

See more photos of his emotional celebration and watch the video of his goal.

Temi Otedola usually keeps things private, but this time, she took to Instagram to reflect on her 10-year journey in the creative industry. Ten years ago, at just 17, she launched jtofashion.com, a passion project she started while juggling university classes and photoshoots.

Fast forward to today, and Temi’s journey has been nothing short of transformative. From fashion blogging to acting, singing, creative direction, and even podcasting, she’s tried it all. But as she reflected, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

There was also so much trial and error in my journey: failed projects, imposter syndrome, no’s, and many bad outfits.

Still, she pushed through. And now, she’s proud—not just of the achievements, but of the resilience and consistency it took to get here.

I wish I could hug that girl and tell her all the hard work would pay off. I find it really hard to be proud of my accomplishments because often careers in online media are seen as only glamorous. Nobody but you sees the 10,000 hours of work behind the scenes.

But I am DAMN proud of myself. I never usually give myself the credit, but this first week of 2025, I’ve been a bit nostalgic. I’ve looked back over the countless photoshoots, rehearsals, emails, meetings, pitches, auditions, 5am call times, and missed opportunities. I’m proud of myself for never giving up on my dreams and staying consistent throughout my 20s.

Thanks goes to God. I also couldn’t have done this without all of you guys—my family, partner, team, friends, mentors, teachers, brands, collaborators, and everyone who has supported my dreams so far.

From starting out in the Nigerian creative scene to representing Africa on a global stage, Temi has broken barriers, including becoming the first African digital ambassador for L’Oréal Paris.

2024 was definitely a year and a half. For Nigeria and Nigerians, it followed the overarching theme of being a country of contradictions – even though those polarisations have been further exacerbated largely by abominable leadership. On a lighter note, I know someone who said he didn’t believe in God. I was shocked to see him share his Spotify Wrapped for 2024 and Nathaniel Bassey topped the list of his most listened to music artists – e get the way the country touch am, my guy unlock Yeshua Hamashiach. Mine was no different, big shout to Jehovah El Aguero – pulling that clutch in the fourth as always. Anyway, here are some thoughts you may find useful during the year. I curated some major keys from my journal and here are selected ones I wish to expand on.

Double Down On Your Identity

One of the things you have to own is who you are, what you represent and how you move. This sounds like nothing but the more you come into the arena of your destiny, you will realise something like Russell Crowe in the original Gladiator film that your opps are not just those that physically fight you but also the voices in your head. Paul gives a powerful piece of advice to his protégé: “Do not let anyone treat you as if you are unimportant because you are young.” When I used to read this, it never dawned on me until recently that I could be part of that “anyone” – in other words, we could inadvertently self-sabotage our own dreams. Thankfully, over the years, I have developed quite a tough skin – I can shut down the noise and reinforce my convictions. You should listen to Gaisebaba on that insightful podcast with Femi Lazarus, some of you don’t fix traditional boxes and if you’re waiting for validation from a status quo that won’t acknowledge you – you will wait for a very long time. Some people love dead heroes, they only give flowers to people on the ground.

A lot of the challenges we face today can simply be traced to an identity crisis. People will cast aspersions on your name, and undermine you by suggesting you are a fraud or that the feat you achieved was a fluke. Don’t let anyone under the guise of being your mentor end up being your tormentor. To borrow Eleanor Roosevelt’s words, “Don’t let anyone make you feel inferior without your consent”. It usually doesn’t mean much when such talk comes from random folks but when it comes from those you imagine should know better, it will hurt. Don’t follow people blindly, yes, including yours truly. The best of us are still human, everyone has their own biases and agendas. For example, if someone you respect becomes a brand ambassador for sugar, don’t start consuming sugar as a diabetic simply because you want to show how loyal you are – that’s being stupid. Use your akonuche and pursue your own strategic interests.

Systems Over Goals, Discipline Over Motivation, Team Over Talent

Every New Year, most people ceremonially set new goals for the year to be achieved on the most significant scale possible – nothing is wrong with that. However, a new year comes along every 365 days – you may not have the luxury of such a period to make drastic changes to your life. What that means is that you need a system that overlaps one goal into the next or another. For example, if your goal for this year is to buy a car, that should be an outcome. One system you can set up to ensure that outcome is a sales or revenue system – not necessarily a savings or car acquisition fund. The natural consequence of a successful sales system is that you will have the required funds to buy a car and even other things that you may consider important to you.

Similar to this is motivation: motivation is great but I will be lying to you that it is sufficient to reach your objectives. There will be days when you don’t feel like doing anything; discipline is the difference between how you respond to that feeling and the person next door who chooses to indulge in inertia. If I only write when I am in a great mood, I will end up a failure because as much as I enjoy writing – I don’t always feel like opening up my laptop and scribbling my thoughts. It therefore means that I cannot depend on aspire-to-Maguire vibes to get things done because maturity means mastering how to maintain momentum. Adults are not necessarily people who have grown older but people who have developed the discipline to do things that might appear boring but are productive.

It’s great to master your skills but 2025 is not the year to brag about it because as we have seen, people who are not half as talented as you are securing the bag. Your team are your enablers, refiners, amplifiers and monetisers. It doesn’t necessarily mean you must hire a slew of staff members, it just means that after you successfully identify what your minimum viable product is and you have developed it – it’s time you learn how to deploy it. Your social media pages should be a part of your marketing team, YouTube can be part research and development team, a record label or talent management firm can be a part of your monetisation team – friends and family can be a part of your advisory team for starters. However, when you come into the big league, you hire experts and professionals. Alone you can go fast but with an effective team, you can go further – you need teamwork to make the dream work.

Bet On Yourself

A lot of people are waking up to the huge popularity of podcasts and OTT platforms over legacy media. Thankfully, I have been ahead of the curve, particularly since the pandemic. There is one guy I will gladly recommend, Patrick Bet-David, the host of the PBD Podcast. I love listening to smart people talk and he intermittently drops odd pearls. There are four points he mentioned one time that can help you take your game to the next level; these are traits the 1% of the 1% who dominate their spheres of influence deploy:

• Out-Work: It’s hard to defeat a person who is willing to outwork everybody else. It’s not a guarantee of success but the more a person is willing to take chances, the higher the probability of their winning. You must be willing to do what the 99% aren’t ready to do; put in a shift and a half. If your contemporaries are putting out content twice a week, you can decide to make yours five times a week. Let people know that you are the gold standard on what it means to be a workhorse.

• Out-Improve: It’s hard to defeat a person who is constantly evolving, innovating and developing new paradigms of doing something. The CEO of one famous phone manufacturer had this to say after it lost its dominant market share to new players and was acquired by another company, “We didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost”. They got comfortable with their products simply being durable when the market was willing to sacrifice a little bit of durability for a product that had multiple utilities and complex functions. Another word for improvement is innovation.

• Out-Strategise: It’s hard to defeat a person who can think ahead of the curve, knows what chess moves to make and understands how to plot a counter-offensive. It’s like a protagonist in most movies, after a while his or her opps will simply give up because the main character somehow always finds a way to manoeuvre or navigate the booby traps. Being a strategist doesn’t in any way mean that you will not get blindsided here and there but it shows to anyone and anything coming against you that you will not just lie down and let them run over you.

• Out-Last: It’s hard to defeat a person who is playing the long game. Some organisations are still in existence today after many decades simply because they weren’t thinking of only short-term wins. That’s why one of the dumbest things a start-up can do is engage in price wars with a legacy business; it is better you out-innovate them because owing to their economies of scale, they can absorb huge interim shocks to their bottom line. The same applies to personal circumstances; sometimes the storm is not yours to fix – it’s yours to survive. Bonus: history is always written by those who survived. If you want to control your narrative, just outlast everything and everyone who is out to stop you.

The Excellence Of Execution

Yes, ideas rule the world but it is also true that ideas are a dime a dozen. Think of execution in terms of photographic resolution or cinematographic definition, the same picture can either be low resolution or high resolution – the difference is a combination of the grade of the camera itself and the skill of the photographer. One of the many reasons the English Premier League is dubbed “the most exciting league in the world” is owing to the excellence of its production. The storytelling, commentary, production value and public relations when combined with the football itself make the league stand out. Bidemi Olaoba is a great recording artiste but the high-resolution nature of his live performances stands him out. The examples are endless.

It’s really a roundabout way of saying you should be the best at whatever you do because excellence is a universal language. Be so good at what you do that your name comes up in important conversations. Someone I respect so much once told me he enjoys my political commentary and asked if I ever have intentions of running for public office, I told him I am just being an active citizen – I have such desires. Another person also said she loves my commentary on faith, she was also shocked when I told her I have no intentions of starting ‘anything’ along those lines. My point is this, excellence is your way of communicating to people that you can operate at a much higher level if the opportunity presents itself. The first time I ever heard the phrase, “the excellence of execution” was from WWE Hall of Famer, Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart. He described himself as “the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.” Now that’s an idea worth sharing.

Patriot FC

I can’t end without a note about Nigeria. The handwriting is on the wall, 2025 will be a wild year – events that will fundamentally shape our existence as a collective will occur and those in power won’t see it coming. This is not smoke and mirrors, I am laying it out in plain terms. If you know anyone in the political class; from the federal, state and local governments – tell them to do right by the people. If the rubber hits the road, the old antics won’t be enough this time. To every patriot, you must take ownership of saving Nigeria – stop outsourcing your responsibility to some influencer or popular figure. Some of our faves will sell out and become confidential human sources and assets, don’t let that surprise you. Some people have become too ashamed to defend the indefensible owing to the reputational damage that comes with it, so the new strategy is to recruit by hook or crook, those that have decent social capital for psyops and social engineering. Also, Nigeria is bigger than any one person, if salvation comes from an unlikely source or alliance – brace yourselves to discern and be open to it. Remember to put country over personality even when you are emotionally invested in certain people. Nigeria is all we have, we have to fight for it. Selah.

“This is a first award I was told that I won that made me cry,” Viola shared with USA TODAY bahead of the ceremony.  “Little Viola showed up who just never could imagine that she could evolve into this life, into this career. I just feel incredibly grateful today.”

Fellow Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep presented the award, a gesture Viola said added “to the magic” of the night. On stage, she delivered a captivating 16-minute speech without a teleprompter, sharing her journey from a turbulent childhood to Hollywood stardom. She reflected on how her upbringing shaped her craft and how financial necessity influenced her choice of roles in her early career.

As anticpation builds for the 82nd Golden Globes airing live later today in the evening, Viola Davis will also take the stage as a presenter, alongside Elton JohnDwayne Johnson, and Vin Diesel and more.

Sharing photos from the night on social media, Viola’s caption was as emotional as her speech:

Being an actor has always been the cosmic carrot to a much higher, deeper journey. I’ve ALWAYS been in search of connection to people but also to…..myself. I found it through artistry. It’s a sacred, magical tool that has elevated my life in every way. It’s why I fight for elevated content for people of color. I fight for characters who otherwise wouldn’t be seen. I fight. There are no words to describe this honor. Only little Viola can…..and she is squealing! She is basking in worthiness. And she feels deeply, deeply SEEN

Pain is inevitable in life. Everybody is dealing with different kinds of pain; from losses in business to losing someone we love, even being heartbroken or betrayed by people we trust. Sometimes, it might be physical pain from an illness or accident. Whatever the kind of pain, one thing is sure: nobody wants to experience it. Pain is often overlooked when we think about growth and progress because no one wants to talk about it, let alone embrace it. But since we’ve all been through some kind of pain at some point, the real question is: how can we use that pain as leverage for growth and progress?

Pain is proof that something is wrong. It’s like a warning light in the vehicle of life telling us to stop and get it checked. At first, the problem might not be obvious, but ignoring it won’t solve anything. The first step to fixing it is reflection. Ray Dalio, one of the most successful investment minds, said it best: “Pain plus reflection equals progress.” But let’s be honest, reflection is not easy. It forces us to revisit what caused the pain, to unwrap it layer by layer. And as we all know, pain isn’t beautiful. It’s ugly, it’s tough, it hurts.

Because reflection is hard, most people prefer to jump to quick conclusions to protect themselves from the pain. If a business fails, they vow never to try that kind of business again. If it’s a bad breakup, they conclude that love is rubbish. If it’s an accident, they swear off that mode of transportation. While these quick decisions may give temporary relief, they rob us of the lessons hidden in the pain. Let’s call it what it is—wasting the pain. Pain is already bad enough, why let it waste?

Reflection, no matter how difficult it may feel, allows us to honestly examine the layers of what caused our pain. This process is not something that happens overnight; it can take days, weeks, or even months. However, it ultimately helps us understand what went wrong and what we can do differently in the future.

Take heartbreak, for example. Experiencing heartbreak doesn’t mean that love itself is bad. It might simply mean that you chose the wrong partner, or perhaps you didn’t behave well in the relationship. It could also be a matter of bad timing, or even a combination of these factors. Without honest reflection, though, you risk repeating the same mistakes and continually finding yourself in similar pain.

Consider a business owner whose employee has stolen goods worth millions. The pain they feel is very real; they might be heartbroken and tempted to avoid hiring staff altogether. However, that would be the easy way out. Reflection will reveal some real lessons which might be a lack of checks and balances. Maybe you trusted too much, or maybe your systems weren’t tight enough. The pain is a call to tighten up, not give up. Some of the best workplace systems today, like security cameras, audits, and background checks, came from the pain businesses experienced.

The same applies to friendships. Some people have been betrayed by friends and decide to cut off all friendships, thinking, “No more friends.” However, the issue isn’t with friendship itself—there are plenty of examples of loyal and genuine friends out there. Perhaps you didn’t choose your friends wisely, overlooked certain red flags, or maybe you weren’t the best friend yourself. Taking time for reflection can help you understand what went wrong and how to improve in the future.

Sometimes, even after deep reflection, you’ll realise that you did everything right and just encountered a bad apple. That’s life. But you wouldn’t recognise this without taking the time to reflect.

Indeed, Ray Dalio is right; pain plus reflection equals progress. Pain invites us to reflect honestly, rather than jumping to quick conclusions. As we move through 2025, let’s embrace our pain, reflect on it, and use it as a stepping stone for growth. Don’t let your pain go to waste.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been honoured as Harper’s Bazaar España’s “Woman of the Year” in Literature, a recognition of her remarkable contributions to storytelling and cultural advocacy.

During her acceptance speech in Madrid, Chimamanda reflected on the power of stories, saying: “Through literature, we learn what matters to people, what they love, what they respect, what threats they feel, what they regret, how egos are formed. Those things matter. Stories matter.”

This accolade is part of Harper’s Bazaar España’s annual ‘Women of the Year’ celebration, which closes out the year with a special issue spotlighting inspiring women. Alongside Chimamanda, the issue features seven stunning covers showcasing women like Jerry Hall, Diane Kruger, Elizabeth Hurley, and Teresa Perales, all recognised for excelling in their respective fields.

Editor-in-chief Inmaculada Jiménez described the honourees as “Women who never allowed their fears to roll over on the way to dreams and who kept very much in mind that the barriers they had to face were always external, never in their souls and in their hearts. Women who, in their firm commitment to achieve what they were looking to be, have managed to be what every good society needs.”

Chimamanda’s recognition comes ahead of the release of her highly anticipated new novel, “Dream Count,” set to debut in March 2025, marking her return to fiction.

Sharing the moment on Instagram, Chimamanda posted a clip of the magazine, writing: “About a cover shoot in Madrid filled with such warm, lovely energy… Thank you so much, @harpersbazaares. Harper’s Bazaar España ‘Woman of the Year.’”

In an inspiring collaboration, Nigerian actress and humanitarian Stephanie Okereke Linus has joined forces with the George Washington University’s Institute for Corporate Responsibility to launch the Maternal Health and Nutrition Initiative Africa (MaHNIA). This groundbreaking initiative aims to tackle pressing challenges in maternal health and nutrition across marginalised African communities, focusing on empowering women and improving long-term health outcomes.

The partnership was officially unveiled following two screenings of Stephanie’s award-winning film “Dry.” The movie, which poignantly explores the journey of a 13-year-old Nigerian child bride living with obstetric fistula, served as the backdrop for an impactful panel discussion. Hosted by GW’s Global Food Institute and Global Women’s Institute, the event delved into critical issues surrounding maternal health, women’s rights, and the importance of nutrition in building resilient healthcare systems in Africa.

Stephanie Linus, founder of the Extended Hands Foundation and a long-time advocate for women’s health, passionately shared her vision for MaHNIA. “Safe motherhood and proper nutrition are not privileges; they are fundamental rights,” she asserted. “Through this initiative, we aim to ensure that women in underserved communities not only survive childbirth but thrive afterward. MaHNIA is about combining healthcare and nutrition to deliver solutions that last.”

The significance of nutrition in maternal care was a key theme of the discussion. Tara Scully, Director of Curriculum Development at GW’s Global Food Institute, underscored this connection: “When we talk about healthcare, we must also talk about nutrition. A mother’s nutritional status impacts not just her health but her child’s as well. By integrating nutrition education into healthcare, we can improve outcomes for generations to come.”

Public-private partnerships emerged as a central strategy for tackling these issues. John J. Forrer, Director of GW’s Institute for Corporate Responsibility, highlighted their transformative potential: “The private sector, working alongside public health institutions, can significantly improve access to healthcare. By collaborating, we can ensure maternal health services reach the people who need them most.”

Other panellists brought further insights to the table. Erin Mielke, Senior Technical Adviser for Reproductive Health at USAID, called attention to the alarming rise in unsafe medical practices in low-resource settings, which are contributing to an increase in cases of obstetric fistula. “At USAID, we address these challenges through a comprehensive approach that includes gender-based violence training, nutrition assessments, and physiotherapy,” she explained.

Professor Lauri J. Romanzi from Thomas Jefferson University added urgency to the discussion by emphasising the preventable nature of fistula: “For every woman who survives a fistula, several others lose their lives. Strengthening healthcare systems is key to eliminating this tragedy entirely.”

The collaboration between GW University and Stephanie Linus aims to bridge gaps in knowledge and resources by developing a community-focused toolkit tailored to the realities of marginalised populations in Nigeria. The toolkit will be co-created with local partners, combining research and community engagement to ensure it meets actual needs and fosters meaningful change.

Linus closed the event by reflecting on her personal mission to use storytelling as a tool for social change. “My film Dry tells the story of one girl, but her experience mirrors those of millions of women who endure similar struggles in silence. Through MaHNIA, we are not only giving them a voice but also providing real, actionable solutions.”

The Maternal Health and Nutrition Initiative Africa represents a significant step forward in addressing the maternal health crisis across the continent. By combining healthcare services, nutrition support, and community-driven approaches, the initiative seeks to create a brighter and healthier future for women and children in underserved communities.

“Every experience is molding you. The uncertainties will never really leave, in fact, the stakes will only get bigger, but you will be bigger too, bigger in skill, in spirit, in heart, and you’ll be able to weather many storms.” These are the words of Jade Osiberu, the Nollywood filmmaker behind “Gangs of Lagos,” “Christmas In Lagos,” and “Sugar Rush,” as she reflects on her journey in an open letter to herself.

Jade’s letter is addressed to her 29-year-old self, the lady who took a leap by leaving her job to start her own company, not knowing much about the film industry but driven by the dream of building something of her own. Despite the doubts from friends and the fear of failure, she decided to take that step anyway.

Looking back at 39, Jade now wishes she could tell her younger self:

Not be so scared, not be so hard on yourself, to learn to celebrate your wins and not bury your head in shame when you think you’ve failed because you actually never did fail. Every experience is molding you. The uncertainties will never really leave; in fact, the stakes will only get bigger, but you will be bigger too, bigger in skill, in spirit, in heart, and you’ll be able to weather many storms.

Read Jade’s full letter below to get a glimpse into the thoughts and reflections that have shaped her journey in Nollywood.

Alex Iwobi is making Christmas more cheerful for families in need with a thoughtful gesture that captures the spirit of the season. The Super Eagles midfielder and Fulham star is spreading joy by opening a pop-up shop in Canning Town, East London—where he spent his early years—offering free food to families in need.

The shop, named ‘Alexpress’, is stocked with a variety of essentials from household items, food, drinks, and even Christmas turkeys.

For Alex, this goes beyond just spreading holiday cheer, it’s a way to give back to the community where he grew up and honour the values his parents taught him.

In a chat with the BBC, Alex shared how growing up with such examples shaped his approach to life, describing them as his role models whose generosity has always inspired him.

Welcome to Alexpress, hosted by me in Canning Town, where I was raised for my primary school years. People, families—they are going to come in. They select a drink, also stuff for the house. There’s different foods that they can take, and by the end of it, there is a turkey.

We like to do something every Christmas to try and give back. If I can help them celebrate a great Christmas, why not?

Just seeing how my parents are, I have always seen them give back. And with that as role models, it just made me feel like, when I get into a position where I am today, or if I was in less of a position, I would always try to do my best to give back and help out the less fortunate or people that are not able to eat.

Kendall Jenner is giving us all the Christmas feels with a tour of her beautifully decorated LA home. This year, she’s traded the flashy KardashianJenner holiday style for something a bit more laid-back and nostalgic, and we’re loving it.

With help from celeb florist Jeff Leatham, Kendall’s space is decked out with lush green garlands, a classic Christmas tree, and vintage ornaments that hold a special place in her heart. Among them is a collection of Christopher Radko ornaments handed down from her mum, Kris Jenner. “Growing up with [those ornaments] every year, they became so special to me,” she says. “And I can’t wait to share that with my kids one day, but I love sharing this with my friends. I love entertaining, I love hosting, and so these decorations get used really well.”

Her cosy, eclectic home—already full of earthy textures and vintage vibes—is the perfect backdrop for the classic holiday décor. It’s proof that Christmas doesn’t always have to be about over-the-top glitz to feel magical.

Toke Makinwa is in the Christmas spirit, and she’s spreading it in the most heartwarming way. The media personality and entrepreneur hosted a beautiful praise breakfast, bringing together her closest friends and colleagues to celebrate the season with gratitude and worship.

The intimate gathering was filled with love, laughter, and powerful moments of praise, led by gospel sensations Adeyinka Alaseyori and Obiora Obiwon. Among the familiar faces were Enioluwa AdeoluwaBukunmi AdeagaIlori (Kiekie), Tomike AdeoyeAdebola WilliamsEmmanuel Taymesan, Tania Omotayo, and many more who joined Toke in thanking God for His goodness.

Reflecting on the year, Toke shared:

Ending the year with immense GRATITUDE….. 🙏

I decided to throw a praise breakfast with a small group of friends.

2024, the “no Gree for anybody year”. Funny, even the devil heard us all so loud and decided not to gree for us but we serve a living GOD.

It was a GOOD year because God is good. I have chosen to only call 2024 GOOD. Everything with God is good and regardless of how life was lifing, God was Godding too and where there was a casting down, our heads were lifted high, Sooo high.

Thank you for saving us, thank you for keeping every single promise, I tore up my prayer requests at some point in this same year but ABBA you heard it all and kept every single promise to me.

Thank you for not seeing me like the world sees me, thank you for not judging me. I have brought your children together cos my own KPI is to know God and let the world he has given me experience him so this is how we go into 2025.

In a historic moment for Nigeria, three exceptional Nigerians—Adebayo Ogunlesi, Wemimo Abbey, and Tope Awotona—have been recognised on Forbes’ inaugural ForbesBLK50 list.

This debut ForbesBLK50 list celebrates the wealthiest, most influential, and impactful Black Americans, marking an important step in addressing the gaps in representation seen in the magazine’s 2009 ranking of the most influential Black Americans. ForbesBLK50 highlights the financial achievements of these honourees and also shines a light on entrepreneurs, innovators, and activists who are changing the world across various industries.

Adebayo Ogunlesi, a seasoned business leader and chairman of Global Infrastructure Partners, brings decades of experience in investment banking and private equity. Wemimo Abbey, cofounder and co-CEO of the fintech startup Esusu, is revolutionising the way renters build credit. Tope Awotona, founder and CEO of the scheduling software company Calendly, has turned a simple idea into a billion-dollar business.

This year’s list also includes powerful figures who have made major strides in business and society, such as Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson.

As Forbes shared, “In 2023, when Forbes launched the ForbesBLK platform, creating a new list of the wealthiest Black Americans was one of its main objectives—but net worth isn’t the only way to keep score of impact and influence in the community and world at large.”

Here are the three Nigerian trailblazers who made this prestigious list, along with how Forbes describes their impact:

Adebayo Ogunlesi – Chairman, co-Founder Global Infrastructure Partners

Age: 70 | Location: New York, NY

A native of Nigeria and now a U.S. citizen, Ogunlesi is a cofounder of New York-based private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). In October, GIP was acquired by BlackRock for $12.5 billion in cash and shares, with Ogunlesi remaining chairman and CEO of GIP. Today, Forbes estimates Ogunlesi—who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oxford, a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School—has a net worth of $1.7 billion. After clerking for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in the early 1980s, Ogunlesi worked as an attorney at the New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Prior to cofounding GIP in 2006, Ogunlesi spent more than 20 years as an investment banker at Credit Suisse.

Wemimo Abbey – Cofounder and Co-CEO, Esusu

Age: 32 | Location: New York, NY

Abbey is cofounder and co-CEO of Esusu, a New York fintech startup that helps renters build their credit histories and scores by reporting rent payments to credit bureaus. More than 20,000 properties currently offer Esusu’s service and some 1.8 million Americans have used Esusu to record a rent payment. The startup also recently launched a direct-to-consumer product, MyEsusu, through which consumers can build credit and monitor their credit scores. In early 2022, Esusu raised $130 million in funding at a $1 billion valuation. Before founding Esusu, Abbey, who grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, worked as a mergers and acquisitions consultant at PWC and cofounded a non-profit and a data analytics startup.

Tope Awotona – Founder and CEO, Calendly

Age: 43 | Location: Atlanta, GA

Awotona is the founder and CEO of the scheduling software startup Calendly, which private investors valued at $3 billion in 2021. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Awotona moved to Atlanta when he was 15, and studied computer science at the University of Georgia before switching majors to business and management information. After working as a salesman for several tech firms and launching a few failed startups, Awotona cashed in his 401(k) in 2013 to found Calendly because he was frustrated with the number of emails it required to schedule meetings. After bootstrapping the company for several years, in 2021 Awotona raised $350 million to further scale Calendly. Today, he is worth an estimated $1.4 billion.

Ten years ago today, Adekunle Gold made a move that would change his life forever. He recorded the song Sade, which would later become a defining moment in his career.

It all started one evening when he was cruising in his green baby boy (his car), listening to the radio on his way home from work. As “Story of My Life” by One Direction played, he couldn’t help but be struck by its beauty.

“I thought it was beautiful,” Adekunle recalls. “I thought it was a good melody and idea. So, I pulled out my phone, recorded the melody, and left it there.”

Little did he know, that simple moment would mark the beginning of something monumental. The recording sat forgotten on his phone for a while. But years later, when Adekunle began working on an EP to reflect the stories of his life, that long-forgotten melody came rushing back to him. It was time to revisit it, and that’s when he realised just how significant it could be.

For Adekunle Gold, “Sade” became more than just a cover. It became a piece of his life, his heart, and his story.

His music has always been about sincerity: “I just make music about myself or about a story that somebody told me,” he says. “I think it’s the sincerity that works for me.”

The story of “Sade” is also one of collaboration and community. Adekunle recalls how Olaitan Dada, who produced the song, helped make it happen—producing it for free and even getting it played on the radio.

Today, as he reflects on a decade of success, with hit singles like “Rodo,” “The Life I Chose,” and albums like “Gold,” “Tequila Ever After,” he takes pride in how far he’s come—and how far his music has taken him.

Ten years later, he says, “I can finally play my own song. Thank you for all the years you have and will keep supporting me.”

A Celebration of Friendship

Oprah, the mastermind behind the surprise, took to the stage to deliver a heartfelt speech. Highlighting their 50-year friendship, she spoke of their unwavering support for each other, their shared successes, and the enduring bond they share.

Next year marks a half a century that we’ve been friends. In 50 years, we have been in sync, in each other’s corner, supportive of one another, looking forward to the best that could happen for each other.

Gayle said on social media the next day:

@oprah is theeeeeeee best of the best! There will be no words to properly thank her for my 70th extravaganza. I feel like she gave me the party I wanted HER to have back in January.

It was a good ole fashion dance party with dancing and food and good friends. I rarely feel like the belle of the ball but I sure did that night….. still floating 🥳🥳🥳 ps special thanx to @djsussone who kept errrrebody on the dance floor

A Night to Remember

The evening was filled with laughter, dancing, and countless well wishes for the birthday girl. Social media buzzed with photos and messages, celebrating the remarkable woman and her journey. Oprah wrote on social media:

@gayleking’s birthday is on December 28, right in the middle of Christmas and New Year’s. She doesn’t like to inconvenience anyone so we bake her favorite yellow cake and her favorite food (Dover sole and hot crescent rolls).

But this year we threw her a birthday blowout with all the people that love her. It was a Gayle love fest—and she deserves every bit of it 💛💛💛

Colin Cowie Lifestyle, the production & design mastermind also wrote:

We pulled off the ultimate surprise with Oprah to celebrate our dear friend Gayle King’s 70th birthday! Gayle was genuinely shocked when she walked into her favorite restaurant Ci Siamo in New York City and saw so many of her friends and family gathered for this special milestone celebration.

We created a vintage motif in gold, yellow, and orange which threaded its way through the décor, dancefloor, cushions, and even the cake. Plus, custom cutout caricatures of Gayle graced all the food stations.

It was an evening of love, fashion, gourmet food, and endless cocktails hosted by the ultimate BFF, Oprah! And, of course, we danced all night to the fabulous music of DJ Suss. Happy Birthday, Gayle!

Throughout her expansive career in media—spanning filmmaking, visual storytelling, and TV leadership—Busola Komolafe has consistently championed one mission: projecting authentic African stories to a global audience.

Not just any African stories, though. Busola is deeply committed to showcasing the rich, positive, and multifaceted narratives that highlight the continent’s beauty and complexity. She believes African stories are compelling because they blend cultural richness with unique perspectives. “African stories offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before—whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions,” she explains. “At the same time, these stories touch on universal themes like love, family, and ambition, which resonate across cultures. It’s this combination of specificity and universality that makes African storytelling so powerful.”

For decades, African storytelling in films has often been told by outsiders, perpetuating stereotypes and negative narratives. Studies reveal that many of these portrayals have used Africa and its people merely as resources to create distorted images that are far removed from the continent’s realities. But the tide is changing. With more Africans stepping forward to tell their own stories, a new era is emerging—one that dismantles stereotypes and amplifies the diversity and beauty of the African experience.

Busola is a key player in this movement. Beyond her work as a storyteller, she now holds a prestigious position as an Active Member of the Emmy Awards Television Academy. For Busola, this achievement is not just personal—it’s a win for every creative working tirelessly to amplify African voices. “This is validation of years of dedication to storytelling and creative work,” she says.

Despite her busy schedule, Busola graciously took the time to share her journey with us. She reflected on the moments that shaped her passion for storytelling and outlined her plans as a member of the Academy. These include highlighting the vibrancy and depth of Nollywood and advocating for the recognition of African storytelling within the global television landscape.

***

Hi Busola, it’s great to have you speak with us. How are you doing?

I’m doing great, thank you! It’s a busy but rewarding time, and I’m excited to be sharing this moment with you and your readers.

Congratulations on your selection as an Active Member of the Emmy Awards Television Academy. What was the first thought that crossed your mind when you got the news?

Thank you so much! The first thought that crossed my mind was sheer gratitude. It felt surreal, like a validation of the years of dedication to storytelling and creative work. I remember thinking, “Wow, this is a recognition not just for me but for the entire African creative community.”

This achievement is not only a personal milestone but a big moment for Nigerian and African creatives breaking into global spaces. How does it feel to represent such a vibrant creative community?

It’s an incredible honour and responsibility. Nigerian and African creatives bring such unique perspectives and energy to storytelling, and being in a position to advocate for that on a global stage feels like a privilege. It’s a testament to the richness of our cultures and the power of our narratives. This is not just my win it’s a win for every creative out there working tirelessly to tell our stories.

Your journey spans filmmaking and TV production, leading to this incredible opportunity with the Television Academy. Was there a defining moment that shaped your passion for storytelling?

Growing up without so many siblings, TV became my closest companion. In a quiet household where not so many kids running around, the presence of a TV set transformed my world. I remember the anticipation of waiting for the local TV station to come on at 4 p.m. The moment the screen lit up, the entire house came alive. It was magical, and even as a child, I could see how captivated my parents were by my fascination with TV content.

My mum nurtured this passion by buying me Bollywood/Hollywood films, and I would immerse myself completely in those stories. It sparked something profound in me, even as a little girl. I realised that I wanted to be part of the magic that TV brings, the kind of magic that fills a quiet living room with life and offers an escape for anyone watching. From that young age, I knew I wanted to create those moments, to be part of the world that gave others the joy and companionship TV gave me as a little girl.

As a TV executive, you’ve worked on impactful projects. Which one has challenged you creatively or stayed with you the most?

The project that challenged me the most and has stayed with me is my short film “Phantom.” It was my first foray into filmmaking after years of working primarily on reality shows. The story came to me, and I felt a deep need to tell it, even though it was a significant departure from the kinds of projects I had worked on before. It was also my first time directing a film, and I deliberately chose to tackle a complex, impactful narrative, a psychological thriller that delved into deep, thought-provoking themes. It wasn’t a “safe” or easy story for a debut.

I vividly remember how nervous I was the morning of the shoot. I prayed and committed the entire production to God, asking for guidance and for the Holy Spirit to take control. That day marked a creative leap for me, and though it was a challenge, it was a beautiful and rewarding one.

The effort paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined. “Phantom” went on to earn selections at seven international film festivals, received two prestigious nominations in New York and Los Angeles, and won multiple awards, including Best Short Film Nigeria at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival and Best African Film at the International World Film Awards. For a first attempt at filmmaking, it was both a personal and professional milestone.

“Phantom” didn’t just challenge me creatively; it shaped me into the award-winning filmmaker I am today. Looking back, I’m proud of the risks I took and grateful for the journey.

African stories are gaining global recognition like never before. What do you think makes our storytelling so compelling, and how can this momentum be sustained?

African stories are deeply compelling because they are rich in culture and unique in their perspectives. They offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions. At the same time, these stories touch on universal themes like love, family, and ambition, which resonate across cultures. It’s this combination of specificity and universality that makes African storytelling so powerful.

To sustain this momentum, we need to focus on developing a strong industry structure. We have incredible talent, but for the industry to thrive long-term, we must build a system that supports consistent, high-quality output. This includes investing in training, funding, and infrastructure, as well as fostering partnerships that help us access global markets.

Now that you’re an Emmy voter, how do you plan to use your platform to champion diverse voices in television?

As an Emmy voter, my primary responsibility is to ensure that excellence and representation are recognised and celebrated. With my vote, I have the power to advocate for stories and creators that reflect the diversity of voices and perspectives in the television industry, including those from Africa and other underrepresented regions. My focus will be on honouring content that embodies exceptional storytelling and innovation, while also contributing to the broader recognition of diverse narratives in global television.

Beyond voting, how do you see your role in the Television Academy helping to amplify Nigerian and African stories to a global audience?

Being part of the Television Academy allows me to serve as a bridge, connecting global audiences to the richness of Nigerian and African stories. Through enlightenment and advocacy I can help highlight the vibrancy and depth of Nollywood, showcasing its cultural significance and creative impact. My role is to advocate for the recognition of African storytelling within the global television landscape, opening minds to the beauty and diversity of our narratives.

When you’re not working, which shows or creators do you enjoy watching? Do their stories influence your creative vision in any way?

Even though their stories have not influenced my creative vision, I admire the work of Biyi Bandele (may he rest in peace). His exceptional directing in the film, “Half of a Yellow Sun” left a good mark on Nigerian cinema. I also like the work of BB Sasore. I think he’s one of Nigeria’s brilliant storytellers, bringing depth and creativity to his projects. Abby Ajayi is also one great writer even though most of her works is in Hollywood.

Shonda Rhimes for her exceptional story world-building and how intricately she crafts her characters in her TV series. She creates layered, multifaceted characters that feel real.

What’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?

There’s so much more to come, and I’m truly excited about the journey ahead. This is such a pivotal time for African creatives. While I can’t reveal too much just yet, I’ll say this: watch this space. The future is bright, and I’m honoured to be part of this wave of African excellence.

There are young filmmakers reading this interview and thinking, “I’d like to be in a global space like this too.” What advice would you give to them as they work towards that dream?

The first thing I’d like to say is, there’s no such thing as an overnight success. What may appear as an overnight breakthrough often takes years of challenges, growth, being knocked down, rising up again, staying consistent, and staying true to your journey. It’s hard work, dedication, and perseverance over time that bring success.

So, my advice is to stay the course. Know exactly what your goals and purpose are. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” That “why” is what will drive you, keep you motivated during tough times, and remind you why you started.

Believe in your voice and the uniqueness of your perspective. Excellence should be your standard in everything you do. Don’t look for shortcuts or the easiest way to achieve your dreams. Instead, focus on the path that prioritises quality and authenticity. That’s what will make you stand out.

Finally, surround yourself with mentors and people who inspire and challenge you. Learn from their journeys, take advice, and build relationships that will help you grow. Remember, success is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, stay determined, and keep striving for greatness.

The evening overflowed with accolades, heartfelt testimonials, and stirring endorsements from a chorus of eminent voices. They hailed Busari not only as a trailblazer in media but also as a mentor, inspiration, and catalyst for positive change. Her expertise, integrity, and unyielding commitment to telling the world’s most important—and often untold—stories were placed front and centre.

Some of the dignitaries and prominent Nigerians in attendance included Honourable Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate, Her Excellency First Lady of Kwara, Amb. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, Honourable Abike Dabiri, Pastor Paul and Ifeanyi Adefarasin, Mo Abudu, Chairman Arise News Channel Nduka Obaigbena, John Momoh, Channels TV, Tonye Patrick Cole min, Honourable Commissioner Folashade Ambrose, Pastor Bolaji Idowu, Betty and Soni Irabor, Kate Isa, Kemi Adetiba, Colette Otusheso, Adebola Williams, Reality TV star Chioma Ikokwu and Mary Ojulari.

Global Tributes and Testimonies
A remarkable highlight of the night was a video tribute from Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the first female President of Mauritius, who acknowledged Busari’s courage, vision, and the significance of her accomplishments, recalling her first encounter with Stephanie in 2017 at the TED Global conference.

“I saw then a very articulate, determined, and ambitious young lady. Stephanie has become the face of Africa at CNN. People like Stephanie provide the voice that our continent needs,” said Gurib-Fakim.

From within the CNN family, renowned anchor Richard Quest said it was “an honour and a pleasure to … celebrate your achievements in broadcast and journalism,” he said.

“Over the years, we’ve done many stories trying to bring the excitement, vibrancy, imagination, and enthusiasm of Africa to the global audience. You are unique in your ability to do this,” he added.

Other CNN colleagues underscored her role as a mentor and leader, praising the standards of storytelling she championed and her lasting impact on the industry.

Celebrated Nigerian leaders and influencers also weighed in. Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria’s Minister of Trade and Investment, described Busari’s career as a testament to the power of narrative in shaping economic and cultural landscapes, saying

“I’m so proud of you. Sixteen years at CNN is no joke, on the global stage representing your country. This isn’t just journalism; it’s impact. Your life has made a difference in this career, and my prayer is that you continue to shine. Your best is yet to come.”

His Majesty and I have been very blessed to know you.

We celebrate with you from the Iwere Kingdom and join the rest of the world in acknowledging the wonderful, excellent, and amazing gift that you are to the media world and to the world at large.”

A Platform for the Future: Stephanie Busari Storytelling Academy
While the evening was a tribute to her illustrious past, Busari also used the platform to unveil her vision for the future. The newly launched Stephanie Busari Storytelling Academy aims to nurture 100,000 African storytellers over the next decade, while mobilizing a $100 million fund to support thousands of emerging narratives.

Guided by Chairman Tonye Cole, the Academy will provide training, mentorship, and resources to aspiring journalists, filmmakers, and creators determined to present Africa’s stories with authenticity and nuance.

“Tonight is a celebration of the journey so far, but it is also a moment to look ahead,” Busari stated. “For 25 years, I’ve told stories that matter. Now, I want to help others do the same. The Academy will equip a new generation of storytellers with the tools to share their truth—unfiltered, undiluted, and unafraid. If we are to shift global perceptions and unlock Africa’s full potential, we must invest in the people who will shape how the world sees us.”

Expanding Her Reach: SBB Media and StephanieBusari.com
The night also marked the debut of Busari’s new website, StephanieBusari.com, and the official introduction of SBB Media, her innovative consultancy poised to take African narratives global.

SBB Media will offer a suite of services—from documentary filmmaking and media training to public speaking coaching and strategic communications consultancy—tailored for individuals, brands, and organizations looking to engage authentically with African audiences and issues.

“SBB Media is my personal pledge to keep forging ahead,” Busari explained. “After decades of reporting at the frontline of some of the world’s biggest stories, I’ve learned one thing: who tells the story matters. Through SBB Media, we will partner with visionaries, activists, and entrepreneurs to ensure their messages resonate far beyond their borders. We will use our media acumen to elevate African voices in global dialogues, shifting mindsets and policies.”

Prominent Voices and Supporters
High-profile guests, including Pastor Paul Adefarasin, John Momoh, Mo Abudu, Debola Williams, and Toyin Saraki, delivered impassioned speeches, each reflecting on Busari’s influence. They spoke of her unwavering moral compass, her eye for detail and human connection, and the profound ripple effects of her work.

“Stephanie has been a light in the media world,” said Mo Abudu. “With this Academy, website, and media company, she is sharing the burden of the torch, giving countless others the opportunity to discover their voices, refine their craft, and find global audiences.”

Corporate partnerships also shone through. Chivas Regal and major media outlets like 54 News and Channels TV affirmed their support for Busari’s initiatives, recognizing the transformative power of inclusive and representative storytelling. Their involvement ensures that budding storytellers trained by the Academy will have platforms to reach audiences and the backing of a robust international network.

A New Chapter, A Renewed Promise
As the evening drew to a close, Busari’s words captured the essence of the celebration. “I stand here grateful for the 25 years behind me and excited for the decades ahead,” she said.

“We have much work to do—rewriting outdated narratives, highlighting talent and innovation, and investing in the next wave of creators. Tonight, we honour the past, but starting tomorrow, we build a future of limitless storytelling, where Africa’s many stories are told with pride, accuracy, and enduring impact.”

At just 13 years old, sitting in an unfinished building, Nancy Isime made a promise to herself: “I’m going to own a good home!” It was a simple yet powerful declaration that marked the beginning of a journey for the Nollywod star.

Fast forward to today, Nancy is celebrating her 33rd birthday in the most incredible way — owning a beautiful, fully furnished home. The dream of a good home is now a reality, and she’s over the moon about it!

Sharing the good news on Instagram this morning, Nancy posted photos of herself at the entrance of her new home in a chic white dress, balloons in hand, and joy written all over her face as she signed the papers. Her caption was just as inspiring, filled with gratitude and a beautiful reminder of how far she’s come.

This is 33!

Which of the Lord’s blessings can I deny? None!

I remember so clearly, I was about 13, sitting in what was going to be our new home – an uncompleted building, the only windows and doors were those protecting the rooms we would sleep in. Everywhere else was pure carcass!
No flooring, No ceilings, No doors, No windows, No running water- just our beloved well which provided us water to do everything including drink.

I remember sitting there and one day I said… I’m going to own a Good home! But before I buy even a tiny piece of land, I’m going to help Daddy achieve his lifelong dream of owning a fully completed furnished house.

At 17, I started working, starting strongly as a booked and busy Event Usher.
After every earning, I’ll set aside some money towards “Vision Daddy’s house”, this continued through out all of my career transitions and finally on the 18th of December 2022, I gave my Daddy the keys to his fully completed and furnished dream home.

Quietly while everyone was celebrating this new feat, in passing, I said “God, I don do wetin you say make I do oh, abeg help me run my own, but no rush, at your own time”.

December 15 2023, I received the keys and papers to my dream home, after making my first initial payment just a few days prior (Slide 4&5)
3months prior to this day, I didn’t even think that was going to ever be a possibility in my life, na husband house I be dey use style eye

Sigh! God is Good!

At 34 years old, Angélique Angarni-Filopon has made history as the first ever contestant over the age of 30 to win the Miss France crown. Her win comes after the pageant’s rules were changed in 2022 to allow women over 24, as well as married women and mothers, to compete.

At the Miss France pageant, which took place on Saturday, December 14, the flight attendant from Martinique shattered sterotypes and proved that age is no barrier to dreams

Angélique’s journey to this moment is as compelling as her historic win. Back in 2011, she was a 20-year-old first runner-up in the Miss Martinique competition. Thirteen years later, she returned to the Miss France stage with a renewed determination ready to defy societal expectations and claim the title.

Speaking on her win, Angélique shared,

In 2011, I was a 20-year-old first runner-up in the Miss Martinique competition. Today, at 34, I stand before you representing Martinique, its diaspora, and all the women who’ve ever been told it’s too late.

This year’s Miss France pageant was more than just about beauty; it was a celebration of inclusivity and diversity like never before. Over 30 contestants from various fields, including doctors and dentists, competed in rounds that showcased swimsuits, regional costumes, and elegant ballgowns.

Her win also aligns with a broader trend in global pageantry. Just over the weekend, Nwajagu Samuel Chinemerem became the first Nigerian and African to win the Mister International title. Together, these milestones highlight a growing movement toward greater representation and inclusivity.

Namibia has now joined the ranks of countries like Liberia, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, where women have held the highest office in the land. Since gaining independence in 1990, Namibia has been led exclusively by male presidents from one dominant political party—until now. Enter Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the newly elected president and a trailblazer who just made history as the country’s first female leader. Winning the election with 57% of the vote, she ushers in a new era of leadership.

Netumbo’s victory is not just a milestone for gender representation but also a significant moment in Namibia’s political story. Her party, SWAPO (South West Africa People’s Organisation), has been at the centre of the country’s independence and governance. Defeating her closest opponent, Panduleni Itula, leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who secured 25.5% of the vote, Netumbo’s win reflects the country’s trust in her vision and leadership.

But who is Netumbo, the woman rewriting the rules of leadership in Namibia?

Born in Onamutai, a small village in northern Namibia, Netumbo grew up as the ninth of thirteen children. Her political journey began early, with her active involvement in SWAPO during Namibia’s struggle for independence. Alongside her passion for politics, she also built a solid academic foundation, studying at the Lenin Higher Komsomol School in the Soviet Union, earning a management degree from Glasgow College of Technology, and completing a master’s in diplomatic studies at Keele University in the UK.

Her political career has been nothing short of groundbreaking. In 2015, she became Namibia’s Deputy Prime Minister while also serving as Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. Within SWAPO, she emerged as a pivotal voice, driving the party’s vision and strategy. Following the unexpected passing of President Hage Geingob earlier this year, Netumbo assumed the role of vice-president, a position that set the stage for her historic presidential run.

Beyond her political achievements, Netumbo leads a rich personal life. She’s married to Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah, a former chief of Namibia’s Defence Force, and they have three sons. While she’s kept her family life private, her commitment to social development is evident in her advocacy for children’s welfare and education.

In her victory speech, she shared her vision for Namibia, emphasising the need to tackle the country’s biggest challenges, including unemployment, economic reform, and social inequality. She also highlighted the importance of peace and stability, stating, “The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability.”

As she prepares to take office, all eyes are on Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Her leadership marks a new chapter for Namibia, and the world is eager to see how she steers the nation into its next phase of growth and progress.

Social media can sometimes feel like an overwhelming mix of noise, but once in a while, it gives us something truly beautiful. Amid all the trending topics and viral challenges, real people share real experiences that can touch our hearts. Recently, a simple question on X (formerly Twitter) sparked an outpouring of kindness that was nothing short of moving.

It all began when @MarinatedTurks asked, “Has someone been so kind to you that you just sit weeping uncontrollably?” What started as a straightforward question quickly turned into a flood of heartfelt responses. People opened up about moments when kindness made them feel seen, supported, and even moved to tears.

One response that caught attention came from @MeetJMB, who shared an emotional story about a classmate, Chisom Ogbummuo, and the life-changing kindness she showed him.

Yes!

Her name is Chisom Ogbummuo, my class mate who spoke to her dad on my behalf to house me for close to 2 years until I found my feet after school.

When we were done with school (UNILAG), I didn’t have where to live in Lagos. And I swore never to go back home (Kaduna).

I was the Faculty president of my set so I had my office to live in for some days until it was pertinent for me to give keys to the new administration. And that day it actually dawned on me that I didn’t have where to go.

Yemi, another classmate asked that I followed him to his in-law’s 3 bedroom apartment as they (his sister and husband were in the US for holidays). I had just stayed 3 days when one early morning Yemi woke me up that I had to leave as his brother was coming back that day. I was confused with my phone.

So, I called Chisom who was my best friend at the time, and she said, bring your things to Ago Palace Way (my first time there). I went, saw the dad, explained my ordeal and he allowed me in, the rest they say is history.

My first night in their house, I CRIED and CROED!

If I write a book, Chisom and her family will take 15% of the chapters. I will never forget!”

It’s moments like these that remind us that kindness doesn’t always need to be loud or grand. Sometimes, it’s the simple, life-changing acts from those who genuinely care that make all the difference.

Check out the other incredible stories below to see how powerful a small act of kindness can be.

If you’ve ever heard Asisat Oshoala called “Agba Baller,” you’ll know it’s not just a nickname – it’s a title that perfectly captures her command of the game. From Mushin, Lagos, to the world’s biggest stadiums, Asisat’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Her skill and determination have made her one of the greatest players in the history of football, and we can’t help but talk about it.

The title “Agba Baller” is more than a compliment; it’s a recognition of her dominance on the pitch. With every record shattered, every goal scored, and every trophy lifted, Asisat continues to show the world why she’s truly deserving of that moniker.

Her list of achievements is extraordinary. She’s the first African striker to score in a UEFA Women’s Champions League final and has won the CAF African Women’s Player of the Year award six times – a record that speaks volumes about her consistency and excellence.

But before the global spotlight, Asisat’s football dreams began on the streets of Mushin, where she played for FC Robo. Back then, the goal was simple: play football and make something of herself. But even at that stage, her talent was undeniable. Her skill and determination soon led her to Rivers Angels, where she began collecting trophies and making waves in Nigerian football.

Her skills caught the attention of international scouts, leading her to England in 2015, where she became the first African woman to play in the Women’s Super League. After England, she moved to China, dominating the league and adding more silverware to her growing collection.

Then came Barcelona, the turning point in her career. Asisat became a vital player for the club, helping them achieve treble-winning campaigns and becoming one of their all-time leading scorers. Her contributions to Barcelona earned her back-to-back nominations for the Ballon d’Or – the first in 2022, making her the first African woman nominated for the prestigious award, and the second in 2023 after a stellar season where she scored 21 league goals.

Asisat’s impact goes beyond club football. She’s been instrumental for the Nigerian national team, particularly during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where her performances inspired a continent and showcased her ability to thrive on the world stage.

Her journey now includes the National Women’s Soccer League with Bay FC, where she recently scored the team’s first-ever playoff goal in their debut season. It was a historic moment for Bay FC and a testament to Asisat’s ability to make a difference wherever she plays.

What truly sets Asisat apart is how she carries Africa with her in everything she does. She’s not just representing Nigeria; she’s inspiring young girls across the continent to dream big and aim higher. CAF captured it perfectly when they tweeted: “Stars come and go, but Asisat Oshoala remains.”

From Lagos to Barcelona and now the NWSL, Asisat has shown the world what it means to dream big, work hard, and break barriers. Her legacy isn’t just in her achievements – it’s in the hope and possibilities she inspires.

Now, Chidimma is giving us a front-row seat to her incredible journey on her brand-new YouTube channel. In her first vlog, she spills all the details about her path to becoming the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant and earning the Miss Universe Africa & Oceania title. From the highs to the hurdles, she’s not holding anything back—and it’s as real as it gets.

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Early on, Chidimma found out about a petition to disqualify her because of her diplomatic passport. But instead of breaking down, she turned to prayer. “I prayed and told God, ‘If I ever needed you, it’s now,’” she said. And her faith came through for her in the most amazing way.

Then came the nerve-wracking interview rounds. While some contestants were deep in practice, Chidimma was battling the clock—her outfit arrived just 20 minutes before her interview. But she stayed cool and confident. Her advice in similar situations is: “Don’t overthink it. Just have a conversation. When you overthink, you sound rehearsed. Be yourself.”

In her vlog, Chidimma takes us through every unforgettable moment—from the warm welcome in Mexico to her entrance on the Miss Universe stage.

Watch her vlog below and get ready to be inspired.

At just 16, Gout Gout has already made a name for himself in the world of athletics. This young Australian sprinter, of South Sudanese descent, recently ran the 200m in an incredible 20.04 seconds at the Australian Schools Championships in Brisbane, becoming the fastest 16-year-old ever to cover that distance.

The record-breaking run didn’t just put him in the history books as the fastest teenager to run the 200m—it also broke the 1968 Olympic record set by Peter Norman. Gout’s time is now the second fastest ever by someone under 18, with only Erriyon Knighton’s 19.84-second run at 17 in 2021 ahead of him.

Reacting to this remarkable achievement, Gout shared,

It’s pretty crazy. Right now I can’t process it, but I guess tonight when I go to bed, I’ll think about it. These are adults. And me, I’m just a kid, and I’m running them (down).

I’ve been chasing that record, but I didn’t think it would come this year. I thought it would come maybe next year, the year after that.

Gout, who turns 17 later this month, also ran the fourth-fastest 100m by an Australian, clocking 10.04 seconds on Friday.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Gout’s speed and running style have already earned him comparisons to Jamaican legend Usain Bolt. Looking ahead, he’s set his sights on the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, where, at 24, he hopes to compete at his best.

For over 20 years, Titi Oyinsan has been one of Nigeria’s most popular voices in broadcasting. She began her journey at just 17 and is now the lead anchor of “Wake Up Nigeria” on TVC—a career path that’s nothing short of inspiring.

Titi’s story began in 2003 with little idea of where her love for the media would take her. Fast forward two decades, and she’s not only a TV host but also a radio presenter, producer, and author. But her rise hasn’t been without its challenges.

On #WithChude, Titi shared a pivotal moment that shaped her career. Early on, she auditioned for “New Dawn,” the talk show hosted by Funmi Iyanda, but didn’t get the role. That rejection could have crushed her, but instead, it became her driving force. “I became determined,” she said. “I promised myself I would have my own talk show. I would host my own breakfast show, and one day, I would be on my own magazine cover.”

It was a turning point that fuelled her ambition and helped her carve out the remarkable 20-year career she’s known for today.

Titi also let us in on a sweet story about how she met her husband, Gbemileke Oscar Oyinsan. At the time, she was at Soundcity, and he was with Showtime Africa. They first crossed paths on a red carpet, where he happened to be the last person she interviewed. After the event, a torrential rainstorm left the area flooded. Gbemileke stepped in to help, carrying her to her crew’s bus. From that moment, they became inseparable, and today, they share a beautiful life with their two children.

Titi Oyinsan’s journey is proof that perseverance, hard work, and a dream can take you far.

Care beyond Skin: NIVEA is giving over 16 Million Naira Back-to-School Donations to Children Cancer Survivors https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/12/nivea-gives-back-to-children-cancer-survivors/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 15:27:28 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1685175 Written by Ifeoluwa Ayewumi

Every child deserves a chance to dream, learn, and grow—but for children who have battled cancer, that chance is often taken away.

Beiersdorf Nigeria, the makers of NIVEA, is stepping in to change that. In a heartwarming show of care and compassion, the company has donated over ₦16.4 million to The Dorcas Cancer Foundation to help kid cancer survivors get back to school.

This initiative tagged the Back-to-School Fund, will cover tuition, books, uniforms, and other essentials for 15 children for an entire school year. But this is not just about money—it’s about giving hope, rebuilding dreams, and making a real difference.

“Beiersdorf’s campaign is more than a corporate social responsibility; it’s a mission to genuinely care for the community.”

Oladele Adeyole, Country Manager for Beiersdorf Nigeria, summed it up beautifully;

Beiersdorf believes in fostering a more inclusive society and creating a positive impact. This is why our ‘Care Beyond Skin’ agenda exists—to promote both social and environmental change.

Our partnership with The Dorcas Cancer Foundation is one of the ways we’re making a real difference. We know that due to treatment and financial strains, most kids miss school during their treatment and sometimes find it difficult to go back to school once they have defeated cancer due to the heavy financial strains that their cost of treatment has on their parent’s finances, Adeyole said.

During a three-month campaign from September to November 2024, Beiersdorf pledged ₦300 from every NIVEA product sold at leading retailers like Shoprite, Justrite, Market Square, Next Cash & Carry, and Hyper City. The result? A staggering ₦16,456,500 million was raised to help the kids get back to school.

Dr Adedayo Joseph, Founder of The Dorcas Cancer Foundation, couldn’t hide her excitement and gratitude at the gesture;

Thank you, Beiersdorf, for seeing our vision and choosing to invest in it. I can’t even explain how much of a gift this is to the families who will benefit. Thank you to everyone who played a part in this, she said.

For the children receiving support, this is more than a financial gift—it’s a second chance. This campaign is a reminder that change is possible when businesses and communities come together. It is proof that every small action—every NIVEA product bought during the campaign—added up to something incredible.
You don’t have to wait for the next campaign to make a difference. Support brands and organizations that care, and remember that even the smallest actions can create hope.

Together, help can be rendered for more kids to beat cancer, rebuild their lives, and chase their dreams. Thank you, NIVEA, for proving that care goes far beyond skin care.

It was a night of celebration and historic wins at the World Athletics Awards in Monaco as Olympic champions Letsile Tebogo and Sifan Hassan were named Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Both athletes achieved extraordinary feats at the Paris Olympics, redefining excellence in their respective disciplines and inspiring countless fans around the world.

Letsile, who was also named “Male Track Athlete” of the Year, made history by becoming Botswana’s first Olympic champion at the Paris Games. He won gold in the 200m, setting a new African record of 19.46 seconds. The 21-year-old didn’t stop there—he also helped Botswana’s men’s 4x400m relay team secure a silver medal, finishing second to the United States.

Throughout the season, Letsile was incredibly consistent, running the 200m under 20 seconds a total of nine times.

In his acceptance speech, Tebogo expressed gratitude for the support he’s received:

It feels amazing to know that the fans are always there for us athlete. It was a great year and this means a lot.

It’s not just about the team that is around you, there are a lot of fans out there that really want us to win something great for the continent. It was a real surprise to hear my name because I didn’t expect this.

Meanwhile, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands etched her name in the history books by becoming the first female athlete to win medals in the 5000m, 10,000m, and marathon at the same Olympics. The 31-year-old, who described being named World Athlete of the Year as an honour that “means the world to me,” took bronze in the 5000m and 10,000m before storming to victory in the marathon, becoming as one of the greatest long-distance runners of all time.

Since I was young, I watched marathon runners with admiration. They made me wonder if I could run like them, or if I could even finish a marathon. I used to wonder if I could even race a 10km.

This year, my curiosity pushed me to take a risk and compete in three distances at the Paris Olympics. It was terrifying, and that made each finish line more meaningful. It wasn’t perfect, but sometimes happiness comes from embracing imperfections. I’m so grateful to see the journey being valued and recognized so highly.

This award isn’t just for me, my team, and my family. It’s for every young girl out there, watching, dreaming, and believing that she can achieve greatness through sport. To all of you, I want to say: keep exercising, keep training, keep pushing, keep believing, and always remember that no dream is too big.

Hollywood’s very own Kerry Washington just had a moment that dreams are made of. Yesterday, the “Scandal” actress was honoured with a star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the event was filled with love, pride, and celebration.

Held in Los Angeles, the ceremony was as heartwarming as they come. Kerry’s proud parents, Earl and Valerie Washington, were front and centre, cheering her on, while her close friends and mentors Tyler Perry and Shonda Rhimes brought the sweetest energy with their touching speeches.

“She is incredibly kind, giving, and powerful, and her heart speaks first,” Tyler said, leaving everyone feeling the love. Shonda also celebrated Kerry’s authenticity and strength, saying:

“You’re strong. You’re determined. You’re never compromising in your values. You’re always holding onto who you are, despite all of this crazy attention. She’s a born leader. She’s always taking care of everybody, always the hardest worker. She’s passionate about the roles she plays, about her philanthropy, about her activism, about the world. And she is passionate about her family.”

We couldn’t agree more—Kerry is the definition of a trailblazer. From her Emmy-winning turn as Olivia Pope in “Scandal” to unforgettable roles in “Save the Last Dance” and “American Son,” she’s been serving excellence for three decades.

But the most touching part of the day was when Kerry shared that this wasn’t just her dream—it was her dad’s too.

“My mum and dad also taught me to dream. They taught me to believe and pursue, and here we are. Mum, Dad, can you believe it? An actual star” she said, smiling. “You made a wish and it came true… And now I’m swirling in a galaxy of stars, all encouraging each other to shine brightly and light the way for someone else’s dreams.”

Of course, Kerry had to bring us along for the ride, sharing the magical moment on Instagram:

Feeling like the luckiest girl in the galaxy 💫 deeply grateful for this immense honor ❤ thank you to every actor, writer, producer, director, casting director, agent, manager, crew member and most especially to every single viewer and fan! THANK YOU 🙏🏾 When you visit Hollywood, come find this ⭐ and know that it’s not my ⭐ it’s OUR star because you helped make this dream come true. #HollywoodWalkOfFame

A filmmaker, storyteller, author, and pastor—Laju Iren wears many hats. Add motherhood and raising four children to the mix, and you’re left wondering: how does she do it all? She tells Chude Jideonwo on this episode of #WithChude.

Known for her impactful storytelling and groundbreaking work in Nigerian gospel content, Laju opens up about faith, family, creativity, and navigating life as a modern Christian powerhouse. Married to a pastor, Emmanuel Iren, with whom she recently celebrated 10 years of marriage, but Laju has firmly established a unique identity–not just within ministry, but far beyond it.

“One thing I’ve learned is to first define myself based on who I am in Him” she shares.

Her love for storytelling was deeply influenced by her father, a doctor with a passion for reading and writing. Laju’s creative journey began with poetry and grew into something much bigger. She reminisced about producing her first film, “Love is a Star,” on a budget of just ₦600,000. Today, her films are on global platforms like Amazon Prime, and she’s spearheading a tech-driven independent distribution platform that’s transforming how gospel stories are shared.

In this conversation, Laju also addresses misconceptions about pastors, her approach to handling social media criticism, and her perspective on navigating the “darkness in the world” today.

Among the esteemed shortlist are three Nigerians—Ademola Lookman, William TroostEkong, and Asisat Oshoala—whose remarkable achievements continue to place African excellence on the global stage.

Ademola, who finished 14th in this year’s Ballon d’Or rankings, is in the Best Attacker category. The forward finds himself competing with an elite group of global football icons, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, and Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal.

Defensive powerhouse William has been nominated for Best Defender. His formidable skill on the field places him among football’s finest, alongside Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Antonio Rüdiger, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.

In the women’s category, Asisat Oshoala continues her legacy. She’s been nominated for the newly introduced FIFA Marta Award, which celebrates the best goal in women’s football worldwide.

This recognition comes on the heels of another milestone for these Nigerian stars. Earlier this year, Ademola and William were shortlisted for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, further solidifying their influence both in Africa and on the global stage.

Fiorentina fullback Michael Kayode has been named the Best Italian Talent at the 2024 Golden Boy Awards, a recognition of his stellar season with the Serie A club.

The 20-year-old, born in Bergamo to Nigerian parents, has had a remarkable journey in football. Starting his youth career at Juventus, Kayode spent seven years at the academy before moving on in 2018.

In 2021, he joined Fiorentina after a stint in Serie D and quickly made his mark in their youth setup. His contributions helped the team win the Coppa Italia Primavera and the Supercoppa Italiana Primavera.

Kayode’s big break came in August 2023 when he made his Serie A debut in Fiorentina’s 4–1 victory over Genoa. By the season’s end, he had established himself as a vital part of the first team, featuring prominently in Serie A and during Fiorentina’s run to the UEFA Conference League final.

Internationally, Kayode has been equally impressive. A key figure in Italy’s youth squads, he played a vital role in the UEFA European U-19 Championship final in July 2023, leading Italy to victory over Portugal. He further solidified his rising profile with his U-21 debut on 17 October 2023, helping Italy secure a 2–0 win against Norway in Bolzano.

American artist Ja Rule has shared an update on the school he is building in Ghana. He posted photos of the ongoing construction on Instagram, describing the progress as “looking beautiful” and expressing his excitement for when it’s finished. He also thanked Pencils of Promise for giving him the opportunity to contribute to a project that will help change lives.

In his post, Ja Rule wrote:

My school in Ghana is looking beautiful. Can’t wait until it’s finished… sending my love and a big thank you to Pencils of Promise for giving me the opportunity to help change lives.

The project began earlier this year in April when Ja Rule and his wife, Aisha Atkins, traveled to Ghana to begin construction on a classroom block at Nuaso Anglican Primary School. In partnership with the U.S.-based charity Pencils of Promise, the project involves the development of a six-unit classroom block.

This initiative is part of Ja Rule’s long-standing commitment to education. In 2002, he co-founded L.I.F.E. (Love Ignites Freedom & Education), a nonprofit focused on providing educational opportunities for young people. His dedication to education is also reflected in his completion of Harvard Business School’s online certification programme in Entrepreneurship Essentials.

One of the reasons society generally struggles with having certain difficult conversations is that we want to minimise the pain of survivors or perhaps, recluse ourselves from the responsibility of addressing a menace that appears to question our very humanity. Joy Anusim-Emeghara is one of the most courageous women ever walking on God’s green earth; she is more than a survivor – she is defiance-personified. In a world where evil elements lurk in the dark, Joy refused to allow the actions of some sons of perdition to take her perspective. She uses this book, “The Gift of Joy,” not just as a vehicle to control her narrative and take back her power but also as a soapbox to speak for those whose human agencies have been violated by brute beings.

The very first words in the book summarised her story: “I was born to be a warrior woman.” From her mother’s womb, she had started fighting – as a baby, she was born weak and tiny. The doctors had diagnosed her with amoebic dysentery but even in infancy, she braved the odds – she was here to stay. Joy grew up in a middle-class family and like every young lady at the time, life was jaunty, jolly and joyful. Surrounded by her loving family, she experienced the kaleidoscope of life in Nigeria. She grew up in a country with hardly any fences around houses and at a time when children could play and hang out in one another’s apartments without getting hurt and parents were comfortable with their neighbours to a large extent. Joy wasn’t just blossoming into a beautiful young lady, she had the smarts too – so it came as no surprise when she was made the Head Girl in her primary school.

As revealed in the book, at seventeen years of age, she was bubbling with life and eagerly looking forward to experiencing campus life. She immersed herself in a community of faith not just as a commitment to deepening her spirituality but also as a guardrail against the counterculture she expected to confront in such an institution of learning.

One evening, after endlessly waiting for her friend to join her home from campus, she opted to walk home alone as it was already getting dark. In no time, she was crossed by mean-looking young men in a car. From profiling them, the bottles of drinks in their cars and machetes on the car floor – it was easy to determine that they were members of a notorious fraternity in school. In split seconds she was bundled into the car and driven to a relatively isolated location. At this point, her entire life flashed right before her very eyes – the thought of death didn’t seem far-fetched. What followed was unimaginable horror; the three young men had their way with her.

The sequence of events is particularly instructive; how society typically responds to such abominable experiences. The support she got from her family, the fear of being impregnated by a pervert, the nonchalance with which the school management handled her case – she was told she should be lucky to still be alive because only a week prior, another young lady who experienced similar fate was macheted to death. Joy shares how a painful compromise was made between pursuing justice and putting herself through the mental and emotional torture of public scrutiny – reliving the ordeal was just too much of a price to pay at the time.

Her turning point came when she summoned the courage to forgive the perpetrators of such an egregious act. It wasn’t so much that she was allowing them to win or concede her quest for justice, but in the words of Lewis B. Suede, “To forgive is to set free the prisoner and discover the prisoner is you.” That marked the beginning of her healing journey. She would go on to graduate, and serve her primary place of assignment during her NYSC year so well that she became the exception – the one youth corps member who was retained at the multinational company she was assigned to serve.

As God would have it, events conspired for Joy to meet Obinna Emeghara who would later become her husband. After their wedding, Joy further shares the challenges of navigating in-laws, responding to womb-watchers, health challenges, being a woman in the workplace and ultimately raising a family. It’s hard to read the book without observing the central role that Joy’s faith in God plays in her life. Coupled with the support of family members and a community of faith, her story would be incomplete without this awesome cast of Destiny supporters.

“The Gift of Joy” is all about surmounting chaos through the power of inner strength, she gracefully documents her story for those who have experienced such dark days. I have heard her story many times over, so when she handed me a copy of her new book – I instinctively knew what to do.

Joy Anusim-Emeghara is many things but she will not be a statistic. Even as the world marks the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we are reminded by this book that certain conversations must be had – we cannot surrender to the evil cowardice that seeks to silence women or survivors of abuse. “The Gift of Joy” is more than just an eponymous book, it’s a tool that should find its way into the hands of every survivor.

“It feels like a miracle has happened in my life, and it’s a good time to be alive,” Yemi Alade said, reflecting on her first Grammy nomination for the song “Tomorrow.” She shared these thoughts during a conversation with Larry Madowo at the 15th-anniversary event of CNN’s African Voices in Lagos, a series that highlights changemakers across the African continent.

When Larry asked how it felt to reach this milestone after more than a decade of making music, Yemi’s response was deeply emotional and inspiring. “I almost thought this moment might never come,” she admitted.

“I felt seen because it also gave me reassurance that anybody out there can become anything. You just have to believe and not stop—even if the world wants you to stop, don’t stop.”

Yemi’s words were matched by her striking appearance at the event. She wore a vibrant yellow gown, paired with an African-inspired hairstyle that beautifully echoed her passion for African culture.

Keke Palmer never fails to light up the room, and her recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” was no exception. The multi-talented star charmed the audience with stories about her son Leo, her new book, and a heartwarming encounter with Nicki Minaj.

First up, Keke couldn’t stop gushing about her baby boy, Leo, in the most endearing way. “Leo is the best, he’s the best kid,” she said, her face glowing with pride. But she admitted that his growing independence is bittersweet: “One minute he’s like, ‘Mama, Mama,’ and the next, it’s ‘All done, bye-bye.’ And it’s like, well, I just wanted to love you!”

She also revealed that her little one has started singing back to her, a moment that clearly melted her heart.

From Leo, the conversation shifted to her newest project: her book, “Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative,” dedicated to her son. Reflecting on how motherhood has reshaped her perspective, Keke shared:

“I think a lot of changes happened after I had my baby. It really just changes the way you see the world and the way you think. My first book I did when I was 21, I’m 31 now, 10-year span. So much also changes just in your experiences. So yeah I just felt maybe now I could say something again that could be of service.”

The book, which combines her personal insights and wisdom from people she’s met, became even more exciting when Jimmy asked about one piece of advice from Nicki Minaj. Laughing, Keke recounted meeting Nicki at the Met Gala and shared the powerful advice she received:

“Nobody knows what it’s like when we turn off the lights and get to be with ourselves. So you do whatever you need to do to be good with you.”

So powerful, right? Watch the full conversation below
