With over 1,000 coworking spaces now operating across the continent, these dynamic environments are redefining the future of work by offering flexible solutions and a supportive community that traditional office settings often lack.

Empowering Entrepreneurs and Startups

Coworking spaces in Africa are not just about desk space—they are centres of productivity and innovation. For example, spaces like iHub and Nairobi Garage in Kenya have become critical for tech startups, providing access to high-speed internet, mentorship, and a collaborative community. As the year comes to a close, I find it valuable to pause and reflect on the lessons 2024 has offered. Each year brings its share of challenges and triumphs, and this year has been no exception. From significant transitions to moments of personal growth, here are some key takeaways from my career journey that I hope will inspire and guide you as you step into 2025:

You Are One Try Away from Your Next Level

This year reaffirmed the power of persistence. Often, the breakthrough we seek is just one attempt beyond where we want to stop. Whether it was preparing for a new opportunity or navigating complex projects, I’ve learned to keep trying despite initial setbacks. Success is often closer than it seems—remember, you miss 100% of the chances you don’t take.

Exits Are Necessary – Know When to Leave

One of the most significant lessons I learned this year was the importance of knowing when to exit. Leaving my previous employer for a new role was a defining moment. Mastering the art of a timely and graceful exit is a critical skill. Leaving when the ovation is still loud ensures a smoother transition and preserves your professional legacy. Staying too long, even with good intentions, can have lasting consequences that are hard to recover from. Someone once said to me, that the day you start a role, you should start planning how and when you want to leave.

Prepare Before the Exit

Exiting isn’t just about leaving—it’s about preparing for what comes next. This year, I realised how crucial it is to plan transitions well in advance. Preparation means upskilling, building connections in your desired field, and mentally bracing for uncertainty. The process often involves hard questions: What do I truly want? Is this path still serving me? Where do I see myself in 2–5 years? It’s not just about financial readiness; it’s about achieving mental clarity and focus. The more intentional your preparation, the smoother your transition will be.

Every Experience Adds Value

No experience is ever wasted. This year, stretching beyond my job description in previous roles proved invaluable. These efforts equipped me with skills that transcend titles and positions. Even when circumstances take away a job or role, your experience remains a powerful asset. These moments taught me the value of adaptability and using past lessons to create future opportunities. As Ibukun Awosika says, every part of your journey has value.

Reading the Room is a Superpower

As you grow in your career, emotional intelligence and situational awareness become indispensable. This year, I leaned heavily on the ability to “read the room”—whether in meetings, negotiations, or stakeholder interactions. It’s a skill that has set me apart. To master it, you must become an attentive listener—not just to what is said, but also to what is left unsaid.

Invest in Your Personal Brand Early

Your personal brand is one of your most valuable career assets. Start building it long before you need it. Consistently showcasing your expertise and values creates opportunities and establishes credibility. This year, I benefited significantly from the social capital tied to my brand—not just what I do, but the value I bring as Wunmi. Personal branding is about presenting your authentic self to the world, and the value you add. Opportunities have come my way simply because of my presence and engagement on platforms like LinkedIn.

Do It Afraid

Courage has been a recurring theme in my journey this year. Transitioning into the development finance space and organising a women-centred event, Forge Forward, were both exhilarating and intimidating. I’ve learned that fear often signals growth. Taking bold steps, even when you’re unsure of the outcome, can unlock new possibilities. The path becomes clearer as you move forward.

Find the Growth in Waiting

Periods of waiting can feel stagnant, but they hold immense growth potential. During times when I felt stuck professionally, I chose to focus on development—enrolling in courses, building relationships, and refining my skills. Waiting can be an opportunity to prepare for the next big step. Professional development is always a good idea—it gives me options and a sense of progress, even in uncertain times.

2024 has been a year of stretching, learning, and stepping out of comfort zones. As I look to the future, these lessons will serve as a compass, guiding my decisions and inspiring the next chapter of my career. For anyone navigating transitions, remember that every challenge holds a lesson, and every lesson is a step towards your next level.

What lessons has 2024 taught you? I’d love to hear your reflections.

In a glittering celebration that drew together international media heavyweights, thought leaders, royalty, and policymakers, Stephanie Busari was honoured for her 25 years of groundbreaking work in journalism and 16 years of distinguished service at CNN.

The event, held in Lagos at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture & History and attended by a constellation of influential figures, paid tribute to Busari’s extraordinary legacy—an Emmy, Peabody, and Gracie award-winning journalist whose reporting has reshaped global perspectives on Africa.

The evening overflowed with accolades, heartfelt testimonials, and stirring endorsements from a chorus of eminent voices. They hailed Busari not only as a trailblazer in media but also as a mentor, inspiration, and catalyst for positive change. Her expertise, integrity, and unyielding commitment to telling the world’s most important—and often untold—stories were placed front and centre.

Some of the dignitaries and prominent Nigerians in attendance included Honourable Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate, Her Excellency First Lady of Kwara, Amb. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, Honourable Abike Dabiri, Pastor Paul and Ifeanyi Adefarasin, Mo Abudu, Chairman Arise News Channel Nduka Obaigbena, John Momoh, Channels TV, Tonye Patrick Cole min, Honourable Commissioner Folashade Ambrose, Pastor Bolaji Idowu, Betty and Soni Irabor, Kate Isa, Kemi Adetiba, Colette Otusheso, Adebola Williams, Reality TV star Chioma Ikokwu and Mary Ojulari.

Global Tributes and Testimonies
A remarkable highlight of the night was a video tribute from Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the first female President of Mauritius, who acknowledged Busari’s courage, vision, and the significance of her accomplishments, recalling her first encounter with Stephanie in 2017 at the TED Global conference.

“I saw then a very articulate, determined, and ambitious young lady. Stephanie has become the face of Africa at CNN. People like Stephanie provide the voice that our continent needs,” said Gurib-Fakim.

From within the CNN family, renowned anchor Richard Quest said it was “an honour and a pleasure to … celebrate your achievements in broadcast and journalism,” he said.

“Over the years, we’ve done many stories trying to bring the excitement, vibrancy, imagination, and enthusiasm of Africa to the global audience. You are unique in your ability to do this,” he added.

Other CNN colleagues underscored her role as a mentor and leader, praising the standards of storytelling she championed and her lasting impact on the industry.

Celebrated Nigerian leaders and influencers also weighed in. Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria’s Minister of Trade and Investment, described Busari’s career as a testament to the power of narrative in shaping economic and cultural landscapes, saying

“I’m so proud of you. Sixteen years at CNN is no joke, on the global stage representing your country. This isn’t just journalism; it’s impact. Your life has made a difference in this career, and my prayer is that you continue to shine. Your best is yet to come.”

Royal support came from Olori Atuwatse III, who underscored the cultural significance of Busari’s work, saying: “We recently met, but I felt immediately connected to you because of your excellence, your commitment, your passion, and the professionalism with which you approach your work. His Majesty and I have been very blessed to know you.

We celebrate with you from the Iwere Kingdom and join the rest of the world in acknowledging the wonderful, excellent, and amazing gift that you are to the media world and to the world at large.”

A Platform for the Future: Stephanie Busari Storytelling Academy
While the evening was a tribute to her illustrious past, Busari also used the platform to unveil her vision for the future. The newly launched Stephanie Busari Storytelling Academy aims to nurture 100,000 African storytellers over the next decade, while mobilizing a $100 million fund to support thousands of emerging narratives.

Guided by Chairman Tonye Cole, the Academy will provide training, mentorship, and resources to aspiring journalists, filmmakers, and creators determined to present Africa’s stories with authenticity and nuance.

“Tonight is a celebration of the journey so far, but it is also a moment to look ahead,” Busari stated. “For 25 years, I’ve told stories that matter. Now, I want to help others do the same. The Academy will equip a new generation of storytellers with the tools to share their truth—unfiltered, undiluted, and unafraid. If we are to shift global perceptions and unlock Africa’s full potential, we must invest in the people who will shape how the world sees us.”

Expanding Her Reach: SBB Media and StephanieBusari.com
The night also marked the debut of Busari’s new website, StephanieBusari.com, and the official introduction of SBB Media, her innovative consultancy poised to take African narratives global.

SBB Media will offer a suite of services—from documentary filmmaking and media training to public speaking coaching and strategic communications consultancy—tailored for individuals, brands, and organizations looking to engage authentically with African audiences and issues.

“SBB Media is my personal pledge to keep forging ahead,” Busari explained. “After decades of reporting at the frontline of some of the world’s biggest stories, I’ve learned one thing: who tells the story matters. Through SBB Media, we will partner with visionaries, activists, and entrepreneurs to ensure their messages resonate far beyond their borders. We will use our media acumen to elevate African voices in global dialogues, shifting mindsets and policies.”

Prominent Voices and Supporters
High-profile guests, including Pastor Paul Adefarasin, John Momoh, Mo Abudu, Debola Williams, and Toyin Saraki, delivered impassioned speeches, each reflecting on Busari’s influence. They spoke of her unwavering moral compass, her eye for detail and human connection, and the profound ripple effects of her work.

“Stephanie has been a light in the media world,” said Mo Abudu. “With this Academy, website, and media company, she is sharing the burden of the torch, giving countless others the opportunity to discover their voices, refine their craft, and find global audiences.”

Corporate partnerships also shone through. Chivas Regal and major media outlets like 54 News and Channels TV affirmed their support for Busari’s initiatives, recognizing the transformative power of inclusive and representative storytelling. Their involvement ensures that budding storytellers trained by the Academy will have platforms to reach audiences and the backing of a robust international network.

A New Chapter, A Renewed Promise
As the evening drew to a close, Busari’s words captured the essence of the celebration. “I stand here grateful for the 25 years behind me and excited for the decades ahead,” she said.

“We have much work to do—rewriting outdated narratives, highlighting talent and innovation, and investing in the next wave of creators. Tonight, we honour the past, but starting tomorrow, we build a future of limitless storytelling, where Africa’s many stories are told with pride, accuracy, and enduring impact.”

For over 20 years, Titi Oyinsan has been one of Nigeria’s most popular voices in broadcasting. She began her journey at just 17 and is now the lead anchor of “Wake Up Nigeria” on TVC—a career path that’s nothing short of inspiring.

Titi’s story began in 2003 with little idea of where her love for the media would take her. Fast forward two decades, and she’s not only a TV host but also a radio presenter, producer, and author. But her rise hasn’t been without its challenges.

On #WithChude, Titi shared a pivotal moment that shaped her career. Early on, she auditioned for “New Dawn,” the talk show hosted by Funmi Iyanda, but didn’t get the role. That rejection could have crushed her, but instead, it became her driving force. “I became determined,” she said. “I promised myself I would have my own talk show. I would host my own breakfast show, and one day, I would be on my own magazine cover.”

It was a turning point that fuelled her ambition and helped her carve out the remarkable 20-year career she’s known for today.

Titi also let us in on a sweet story about how she met her husband, Gbemileke Oscar Oyinsan. At the time, she was at Soundcity, and he was with Showtime Africa. They first crossed paths on a red carpet, where he happened to be the last person she interviewed. After the event, a torrential rainstorm left the area flooded. Gbemileke stepped in to help, carrying her to her crew’s bus. From that moment, they became inseparable, and today, they share a beautiful life with their two children.

Titi Oyinsan’s journey is proof that perseverance, hard work, and a dream can take you far.

One day, Veekee James had an epiphany: she was paying the salaries of over 30 people, and she was just 5 year into her fashion business. It was at that moment she realised she was an economically powerful woman.

We visited Veekee James’ studio, where all the magic happens—from client consultations to designing and crafting custom pieces. Just as we arrived, Veekee was in the middle of creating a dress. Swapping her heels for flats, she got to work and walked us through her inspiring journey.

If you know Veekee, you’ve probably heard her story about starting her fashion business in her mum’s living room in Ajegunle. Reflecting on her humble beginnings, Veekee shared that, despite her undeniable talent for fashion, she had other skills too, including makeup artistry, which she used to earn extra income. However, she always prioritized her fashion dreams. “Prioritise your future,” she advises, explaining that instead of splurging on designer bags or shoes, she saved money from her side businesses to fund her fashion brand.

When asked what her bank balance would look like as a dress, Veekee said it would be a grand, flowy ball gown—an image of true financial power! We also enjoyed talking about her journey to becoming one of Nigeria’s top designers, which was not without its unique challeneges, as well as the importance of women gaining financial independence, autonomy, and economic power.

In this episode of #HerMoneyHerPower, Tobi Ayeni, known as Miss Techy dives into the importance of women taking up space in male-dominated fields like tech. She opens up about tech, money, power, and the intersection of these themes.

As a tech content creator, Miss Techy shared the obstacles she faced early in her career. One key challenge was the assumption that, because she didn’t fit the ‘tech bro’ stereotype, she couldn’t possibly know her stuff. This misconception affected how her content was received, forcing her to work twice as hard to prove her expertise.

For Miss Techy, economic power as a woman means complete independence: “It means I don’t need to rely on anyone to make things happen. I can work for my money, earn it, spend it how I want, save it how I please, invest wisely, and still help others along the way.”

She also debunked the misconception that women can’t afford certain luxuries without the help of a man. Citing a real-life example, she recalled buying an Apple Vision Pro and the insinuations that a man or sugar daddy must have paid for it.

Miss Techy spoke candidly about how society pressures successful women to downplay their achievements. She admitted she used to be concerned about intimidating others with her success, but she’s moved past that mindset.

As the world becomes increasingly tech-driven, it’s crucial for women to harness technology for economic progress and to amplify their voices. Miss Techy emphasiSed the importance of tech for women, explaining how it can create opportunities and products that cater to their needs. She stressed that it’s time for women to redefine what it means to hold economic power.

Nelo Okeke is here to drop some serious truth bombs about marriage and financial independence. And she does that sharing her experience. She got married young and admits that she didn’t know much about money back then. In her family, education was a big deal, but financial literacy wasn’t.

Having married at the age of 23 after meeting her husband at 22, she acknowledges that discussions about women’s economic power were absent in her upbringing. Coming from a family where education was paramount, Nelo is grateful for the privilege of a solid educational background. “I graduated with my master’s degree,” she noted, highlighting the importance of education in her life. However, she admitted that despite her qualifications, she undervalued the significance of financial stability during her early years.

Nelo recounted how, at the time, she viewed marriage as her primary focus, even quitting her job, with the belief that her husband would take care of her financially. “Do not do it,” she cautioned young women, emphasising the importance of being financially savvy and self-sufficient.

“Nobody ever taught me I had the option of making my own money. No one encouraged me to aspire to be greater than what I was,” the digital content and lifestyle creator reflected. Nelo pointed out a stark reality: “We teach boys that financial independence is important, and we teach girls that marriage is important.” While she acknowledges the significance of marriage for both genders, she firmly believes that financial stability is equally crucial.

Now, as a mother, Nelo is committed to instilling the values of ambition and independence in her daughter. She encourages her to strive for greatness and pursue her career ambitions, stating, “I want her to have her money and economic power.” Though Nelo’s early marriage worked for her and she married a supportive husband, she emphasises that having personal financial resources is essential. “No matter how rich your husband is, it’s vital to have your own money so you can maintain your agency, with or without a husband.”

Nelo is thrilled to align with the #HerMoneyHerPower movement by BellaNaija and The She Tank, expressing her hope that others join the conversation. “This is literally the life I live,” she stated passionately.

Standing on #HerMoneyHerPower business, Blessing Adesiyan recently sat down with News Central to discuss the delicate balance between being a successful woman in the corporate world and managing a fulfilling personal life.

Let’s face it, there’s a long-standing myth out there that women who climb the corporate ladder often sacrifice their personal lives. But Blessing is here to tell you that it’s not true.

While women are undoubtedly exceptional multitaskers, balancing successful careers, managing households, raising children, and still making an impact in their communities, Blessing insists it’s not about asking “can women have it all?” but rather how the society can ensure that women live their best lives without compromise.

As CEO of Mother Honestly Group Inc., Blessing knows a thing or two about this. Her company aims to bridge the gap between women, workplaces, and economies. She also debunked the myth that men can’t step into household care activities, stressing that true progress comes when everyone, regardless of gender, takes shared responsibility for family and home life.

The conversation also touched on the societal expectations placed on women and the importance of supportive partnerships. Blessing emphasised the need for women to have agency and control over their money, time, and decisions, saying it’s about stepping into their power and making choices that benefit both their personal and professional lives.

“It’s time to step into our economic power,” she urged. “We’re doing this for our daughters and young girls around the world.”

At 35, Damola Adamolekun is the youngest CEO of the seafood chain, Red Lobster. Born in Nigeria and raised in Zimbabwe and the Netherlands before relocating to Springfield, Illinois, at the age of nine, Red Lobster was one of the first chain restaurants he visited upon arriving in the United States. It soon became a favourite dining spot for his family.

It was at the Red Lobster in Springfield that Damola and his family—his parents, a neurologist and a pharmacist, and two siblings—first experienced the joy of cracking crab legs and tasting lobster.

In recent years, Red Lobster faced a storm of challenges, especially following the introduction of the popular “Ultimate Endless Shrimp” promotional deal. Priced at just $20, the offer allowed guests to indulge in unlimited shrimp, which proved to be wildly popular but came with hefty financial repercussions. The company suffered losses of $11 million in the first quarter alone.

In an interview with CNN, Damola reflected on the move, saying, “That’s a very expensive product to give away endlessly.” The deal, while driving traffic, led to operational chaos, with more than 100 restaurant closures and thousands of layoffs. By early 2024, the company had filed for bankruptcy. “You stress out the kitchen. You stress out the servers. You stress out the host. People can’t get a table,” Damola explained, shedding light on the strain the deal placed on the company’s operations.

Despite these challenges, Red Lobster has recently emerged from bankruptcy under new ownership, and Damola, who assumed his role as CEO in August, has ambitious plans for the chain’s revival. He intends to make “incremental changes” that will not only restore its former glory but also attract a younger, more diverse customer base. A “brand refresh” is underway, aiming to revamp restaurant layouts, décor, lighting, music, and even waiter uniforms. The goal is to enhance the dining experience without alienating Red Lobster’s loyal traditionalists.

When asked about his age and how it factors into his leadership, Damola is unfazed. “I’ve been in positions of authority for a long time. My 35 might be different from somebody else’s 35, but these are just numbers. It’s about your experience, who you are as a person, the quality of your character, your integrity, your intelligence, your communication abilities—it’s a lot of things that are different from person to person. Age is just one of them,” he confidently stated.

Damola’s journey to the top wasn’t a sudden rise. After earning his MBA from Harvard Business School in 2017, he joined Paulson & Co., a prominent investment firm founded by billionaire John Paulson. It was there he saw the potential to expand P.F. Chang’s small delivery business. In 2019, after Paulson & Co. acquired a controlling stake in P.F. Chang’s, Damola joined the restaurant’s board of directors and later became its CEO during the pandemic in 2020.

Digital creator and interior designer, Ummeeta Rabiu, is giving us a glimpse into her world with a recent trip to Anambra, where she navigated the intense demands of managing workers on-site for a heavy-duty construction project. Breaking walls, making critical decisions, and keeping the project on track were all in a day’s work for the multifaceted entrepreneur.

The stress of handling it all was undeniable, but Ummeeta’s ability to juggle her various roles was nothing short of inspiring. After wrapping up the construction project, Ummeeta returned to Abuja for some much-needed rest and self-care. She treated herself to a luxurious spa day. It was her way of unwinding after a demanding work trip, but more than that, it reminded her of the deeper significance of being financially independent.

“This experience reminded me how fulfilling it feels to be financially independent and take care of myself without relying on anyone else,” Ummeeta reflected.

For her, this wasn’t just about pampering—it was about the freedom that comes with having control over her finances. Ummeeta’s goal in life is simple but powerful: to make money, be happy, and enjoy life on her own terms. This mindset resonates perfectly with the message behind the #HerMoneyHerPower campaign, an Initiative by The She Tank and BellaNaija focused on encouraging women to take charge of their finances, embrace financial independence, and make decisions that align with their personal goals and desires.

The #HerMoneyHerPower campaign is all about shifting the narrative for women. It’s about breaking free from societal norms that often limit women’s financial potential, and Ummeeta is a living embodiment of that message. Her journey from construction sites to spa days is more than just a display of balance—it’s about showing that women can work hard, enjoy the fruits of their labour, and be unapologetic about their financial power.

Whether Ummeeta is overseeing a construction project or indulging in a self-care routine, she is proof that a woman’s financial power is, indeed, her freedom.

“As women, money is something we should talk about,” says Saheeba Zainab Hussain, founder of “Soul Unraveled” and an advocate for self-development, mental health, and creating safe spaces for women and girls. Her focus is clear—women need to have conversations about money, and she’s leading that dialogue with her life and work.

Coming from a lineage of strong, financially independent women, Saheeba has always understood the importance of financial self-reliance. Her grandmother, raised 12 children on her own, and her mother, starting from a small room, built a clinic into a successful enterprise. Following their example, Saheeba ventured into various side businesses while studying medicine—selling abayas, jewellery, clothing materials, running a food business, and even offering traditional spa services from home.

For her, these businesses were not just about making ends meet; they were about gaining the financial freedom to live life fully, just like her mother and grandmother. “You have to start from scratch,” Saheeba advises, emphasising the importance of never belittling any hustle, no matter how small. Every step, no matter how modest, brings you closer to achieving the financial independence that allows you to stand on your own two feet.

To Saheeba, #HerMoneyHerPower means freedom, choices, and power. It’s about having the resources to pursue opportunities without limitations. This belief led her to create “Chai Outreach,” a programme that teaches young girls—who would otherwise be married off after secondary school—how to take control of their finances. Through skill acquisition and business training, these girls can start their own ventures and earn own income. Saheeba’s vision is to ensure that marriage is not a decision made out of financial desperation or vulnerability, but one made from a place of strength, where they have their own resources to bring into the relationship.

As Lagos wraps up its Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Ife Durosinmi-Etti, the founder of Herconomy—Nigeria’s first fintech company for women—shares a powerful message for women about the importance of financial independence.

In an address as part of the #HerMoneyHerPower campaign, Ife drives home the point that “Money stops nonsense!”—a statement that resonates deeply with women navigating their personal and professional lives. Reflecting on her experiences and interactions with women in difficult situations, she emphasises the critical need for women to have their own income, to build their wealth, and secure their futures.

She recalls witnessing countless women trapped in toxic relationships, their fears rooted in questions like, “How will I fend for myself or my children?”, “Where will we live?”, or “So after I suffered with this man, now that he has money, someone will now reap where I have sown?” But her message is clear: your life and wellbeing are far more important than staying in an unhealthy relationship for financial security.

She continues, “These are really valid fears/concerns but in all this, please choose yourself, love yourself and know that you are made for more. You have options and you can truly leave an abusive relationship, without shame and having your own money will give you those options…”

In her message, Ife addresses critical issues like financial abuse—one of the most under-discussed forms of abuse women face, even those in positions of power. Financial abuse occurs when an abuser uses control tactics to limit a victim’s access to money, assets, and independence. Ife explains that this often includes actions like restricting access to bank accounts, forcing women out of jobs, or refusing to pay bills, which can lead to ruined credit scores and long-term financial instability.

“Financial abuse is a tactic used by abusers to increase control over their victim” Ife warns, adding that it’s time for women to be aware, stand strong, and take control of their finances.

There are a few things Cynthia Obi-Uchendu holds close to her heart, and among them is her deep gratitude for her financial independence.

In talking about the #HerMoneyHerPower campaign, the entrepreneur opened up about how her financial stability has empowered her to manage unforeseen challenges and make decisions without hesitation. She shared a personal anecdote about a recent issue with her home’s inverter when the power supply was cut off. Thanks to her financial resources, she didn’t have to wait for her husband to return home—she sorted it out herself, a moment that reminded her of the strength that economic power provides.

Beyond managing day-to-day issues, Cynthia is grateful for the freedom to pursue her dreams. From running multiple businesses to traveling and taking courses to enhance her skills, she acknowledges that her financial freedom has been a key enabler in living life on her terms. This financial freedom allows her to break free from the stereotypes often cast against women, giving her the agency to shape her destiny.

Speaking further, Cynthia reflects on the joy that comes with having her own money. “Spending ‘Odogwu’s’ money (referring to her husband) is sweet, but there’s a unique pride, joy, and freedom in spending mine,” she said with a smile. She goes on to encourage women to embrace financial independence, underscoring that “nothing beats having economic power.”

The latest episode of the “Deep Dive with Teju Babyface” podcast delivers an inspiring narrative. Precious Oshideko, an information security analyst, began his career at the age of 40, proving that it’s never too late to start anew.

At 40, Precious had little knowledge of Microsoft or basic computer skills. Before moving to the United States, he served as a pastor, mainly guiding teenagers. But upon arriving in the USA, he aspired to break into the corporate world, despite lacking the technical skills typically required for a 9-to-5 job. Determined to learn, he opened his mind to new opportunities and embarked on a journey into the field of information security.

His story embodies the adage that “life begins at 40.” Currently pursuing a doctorate, Precious is set to be addressed as Dr. Oshideko by September.

In this conversation, Precious shares with Teju Babyface the details of his career journey, the challenges he encountered, and the resilience that helped him overcome them.

Africa is on the cusp of a technological revolution, driven by a burgeoning young population that is eager to embrace digital tools and skills. With a significant majority of its population under the age of 25, as confirmed by recent data from Wikipedia, the continent is uniquely positioned to harness the power of technology and leapfrog traditional development paths. This demographic advantage presents a tremendous opportunity for Africa to become a global leader in various socioeconomic spheres, including innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

To many organisations, technology is not just an industry; it is a catalyst for economic growth, social transformation, and improved quality of life across the continent. One such organisation is ALX, Africa’s leading tech career accelerator. A registered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to creating access to world-class tech training for millions of people in Africa and the world.

With a network of talent across Africa and a physical presence in eight African countries, including Nigeria, ALX recently held an innovative one-day tech boot camp specifically tailored for teenagers and young school leavers. During an engaging session, they were introduced to the fundamentals of pursuing a career in the tech space. This initiative broadens ALX’s revolutionary outreach to an even younger audience, laying the groundwork for a future-ready generation

ALX aims to foster Africa’s next generation of innovators, analytical thinkers, and leaders who can propel the continent forward. ALX strategically partnered with Slum2SchooAfrica, a volunteer-driven development organisation that empowers underserved children in slums and remote communities with quality education, entrepreneurial skills, and psychological support.

This partnership flourished with a one-day tech boot camp for fifty teenagers from the Slum2School Africa Community, with ALX facilitating the delivery of comprehensive and interactive, early-adoption sessions on relevant tech career paths, sparking the interest of the teenagers in building a tech career based on the introductory session held.

The post Abdulganiyy Ajayi: These 3 Hacks from Product Management Will Propel your Career appeared first on BellaNaija - Showcasing Africa to the world. Read today!.

]]>

Do you dream of an amazing career, one that keeps growing, keeps you satisfied, and lets you reach your full potential? For a lot of people, that dream remains a perpetual pursuit, leaving them wishing for a better tomorrow that seems never to arrive.

While many work hard to excel in their job roles, they often overlook the need for the same level of dedication when it comes to charting their career path. This oversight is a recipe for an unfulfilled career. In today’s rapidly changing world, simply working hard is no longer enough to succeed. Everyone now requires an arsenal of strategies to navigate their career effectively.

Let me share three proven career strategies drawn from product management. These are time-tested tactics that every professional can adopt to grow their career.

Build your career the agile way

People are usually advised to start with an entry-level job as the foundation for a successful career, then gradually ascend to managerial roles. This advice holds true for many, but it doesn’t account for the diverse circumstances that professionals encounter in today’s dynamic job market, especially if they aim for accelerated career growth.

A typical career now often involves horizontal navigations, upward moves, and at times, a willingness to temporarily take some steps down the professional ladder, which can involve accepting positions with lower job titles or salaries in a bid to explore more promising career paths.

This kind of adaptability is at the core of agile methodology commonly practiced by product managers. They understand that product development constraints are always complex and unstable. Hence, they employ an excellent approach of building products in short, iterative phases. The goal is to create products that are flexible enough to meet the ever-changing market demands.

In your career as well, you should always position yourself to grasp great opportunities as they arise. This is a crucial point to note as you make career decisions or acquire new skills.

Career growth analyst, Marti Konstant, defines an agile career as “a self-reflective, incremental career path, guided by response to change, evolving job roles, and designed to optimise creativity, growth, and happiness.” Konstant further advises professionals to “lean into change and make adjustments to career status, rather than sticking to a rigid plan. Acclimate to economic developments and corporate adjustments by uncovering engaging projects.”

Use feedback as a growth catalyst

To accelerate your career growth, you must go beyond your official performance objectives and appraisals. Actively seek candid informal feedback from your colleagues regarding their perception of your performance and personality. This process will highlight your strengths and weaknesses and ultimately guide you on the competencies you need to focus on that will improve your job performance and enhance your chance for success in future endeavours.

“Be open to receiving feedback even if it is incorrect,” says Kiran Bondalapati, a technology leader and career advisor, “You are still getting data about how you are being perceived. Aggregate feedback and find common threads and unique viewpoints. Taking control of your career is too important to be left to your manager.”

You certainly need feedback from colleagues, friends, mentors, and even family members to continuously improve on critical growth areas that will catalyse your career.

Identify and manage your stakeholders

Just as a diligent product manager relies on effective stakeholder management for success, the same principle applies to career progression. The stakeholders in your career are as vital and multifaceted as those for typical products.

A career coach, Caroline Ceniza-Levine, describes them as “People who have a vested interest in the success of your career because it helps their career, because they happen to like you, or because what you do makes their job easier. These people will fight for you when plum assignments are given, when raises are decided, when restructuring means someone gets the short end of the stick.”

Beyond merely recognising your career stakeholders, you need a well-thought-out strategy to manage them. Understand the unique roles they play in your professional journey and identify the aspects of your career objectives that pertain to each stakeholder. This approach, as highlighted by organisational performance consultant, Jo McDermott, “requires you to think through all the players and come up with both an action plan and a communication plan for each. It will likely crystallise your thinking of the next steps and speed your career on its way.”

In all, regardless of your profession’s specific field, always treat your career as a valuable product that you need to manage diligently. This paradigm shift can propel your career growth to unprecedented heights.

Today’s guest on “Omon’s Couch” is Mary Akpobome, a banking veteran and the chief operating officer at Imperium Capital Partners. Mary shares her fascinating career journey, from studying theatre arts to becoming a leader in finance.

For Mary, banking was never her plan. Fresh out of university, she began her professional journey as a customer service intern at Citizens Bank during her youth service. Despite her background in theatre, her talent shone through. She attributed her secret to climbing the ranks to excellence in her role and a knack for building strong relationships. Mary explained how this led to her being entrusted with setting up customer service departments whenever the bank opened a new branch.

Mary’s journey didn’t stop there. She transitioned to marketing and steadily climbed the corporate ladder, eventually moving between different banks. In this conversation with Omon Odike, she also explained why role modelling is a powerful tool for young people.

Yewande Jinadu: How Can HR Professionals Protect Their Mental Health Better? https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/07/human-resource-professionals-protecting-mental-health/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 15:33:03 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1664658 I spoke with a therapist who asked me to define ‘rest’ and what that means to me. Now, anytime I feel worn out, I ask myself, "What would rest mean to you at this point?"

As someone who has not only faced various dilemmas but also coaches and mentors HR professionals through complex situations, I can affirm that HR professionals also face significant mental health challenges. While HR is traditionally expected to support other employees through their mental health struggles by partnering with professionals, it’s often overlooked that they also suffer from similar issues. Regrettably, there is no dedicated support system for HR professionals.

The challenge begins with the ambiguous responsibilities of HR professionals. Depending on the size and structure of a business, HR might find themselves handling procurement, administration, finance, operations, IT support, and more.

Recently, people shared the challenges they face this rainy season, highlighting the impact of the heavy downpour on their attendance and punctuality at work using the trend ‘Dear HR’. However, the truth is that such communication should not be directed at HR. Line managers are responsible for their team members’ attendance and punctuality. HR should be kept informed but should not be blamed for these issues. Here are some strategies HR professionals can use to protect their mental health:

Focus On What is Within Your Control

Organisations have various dynamics, and while HR professionals often treat the business as their own and wish for the best, it is crucial to avoid self-blame for aspects beyond their control. When it comes to employee satisfaction, if decision-makers do not approve of certain initiatives, do not tie your self-worth to the outcomes. This can prevent overthinking and unnecessary stress.

Try Your Best

Analyse what is within and outside your control, and strive to do your best with the elements you can influence. This reflection isn’t to justify yourself but to ensure you’ve given your all. This approach will help you sleep better at night, knowing you’ve put in maximum effort.

Seek Support

Don’t attempt to solve everything on your own. It’s okay to reach out to trusted HR professionals for advice. Realising that others have faced similar scenarios can be reassuring and provide valuable perspectives.

Maintain a Life Outside of Work

If work is your sole source of purpose and joy, your mental health will suffer when issues arise. Cultivate a fulfilling personal life where you feel loved and enjoy activities outside of work. This balance ensures that you have a strong foundation to weather any professional storm.

Engage with Professionals

Consider engaging with a coach, therapist, mentor, or counsellor. While friends can be supportive, the severity of certain issues may necessitate professional help. Therapy can address actual mental health conditions and past and present issues, coaching can guide your future progress, and a counsellor can provide advice on potential steps.

Practice Self-Care

Engage in activities that relax and rejuvenate you, such as exercise, hobbies, or meditation. Do what makes you feel good. Not long ago, I spoke with a therapist who asked me to define ‘rest’ and decide what it means to me. Now, any time I feel worn out, I ask myself, “what would rest mean to you at this point?” Then I allow myself rest to prevent burnout.

HR professionals must recognise the importance of their mental health and take proactive steps to protect it. Taking action towards mental well-being not only benefits you but also enhances your ability to support others, creating a healthier workplace for everyone.
