In today’s interview, we sit down with Abisola Olutokun, a talented Nigerian-Canadian filmmaker, shaking up the world of storytelling with her unique perspective.

From her early days as a child actor to becoming a director, Abisola is carving a niche for herself in the competitive world of filmmaking. Known for her recent production The Fadugbas, she shares insights into her journey, her challenges as a diasporic filmmaker, and what keeps her going.

1. What drew you to filmmaking?
I have always regarded myself as a storyteller. I have always loved telling stories, whether it’s through blogging, writing, or speaking. Before filmmaking, I authored three amazing books that bordered on migration, family, newlyweds, and childbearing. I discovered filmmaking as another avenue to tell transformative stories, it’s a different medium, but it has the power to touch people in a unique way.

2. Tell us about The Fadugbas, what inspired it?
Having first-hand experience as an immigrant, I have been able to witness the struggles that many immigrant couples go through, especially when adjusting to life abroad. The Fadugbas was born from my desire to educate, to help maintain peace and love in relationships, but in an engaging and relatable way.

Being in Canada for over seven years, I’ve seen marriages break down due to cultural shifts and the strain of adapting to new surroundings. I wanted to explore how couples can work through those challenges and address them before they result in a breakup.

3. Before The Fadugbas, did you have a film background?
“Oh yes! I started off as a child actor at the age of 10, featuring in my first film. After that, I continued acting in church plays before moving up to lead Covenant University’s Theatre Group as their Director. I also had a similar position during Youth service at the National Christian Corpers’ Fellowship (NCCF).

Later, I honed my skills by taking acting classes at Radiance Toronto. Interestingly, the inspiration for my first book came while attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), I was part of the Filmstars project in Toronto. My first short film, Japa Wahala, came out in 2023 and that was an incredible learning experience.

4. What do you think makes a good movie?
A good movie is driven by a strong and relatable story. It all comes down to the narrative. But, it’s also about the right cast and crew that understand the vision of the story and are committed to delivering accurately.

You can have the perfect story, but without the right actors to bring it to life, it might not convey the emotions and depth that the story deserves.

5. What are some challenges you faced producing The Fadugbas?
As a new filmmaker, I faced quite a few challenges. I had to wear my hat as a project manager to navigate one of the biggest hurdles in the production which included managing the different phases of the projects, logistics and resources, cast and crew scattered across different locations while trying to maintain the authenticity of the story. Budgeting is always a challenge, especially for independent filmmakers, and getting the right team together for a project is not always easy but perseverance and passion helped me push through.

6. What sort of movies would you like to work on but haven’t had the opportunity yet?
There are many genres I would love to explore. I’m particularly interested in historical dramas and documentaries that explore African heritage, as well as films that tackle social issues like immigration, love and family.

7. What inspires you as a person?
My main source of inspiration is God. Then people I meet, the stories I hear, and the resilience of communities. I’m also inspired by the ability to make a positive impact through storytelling, whether it’s through a film, a book, or an article. I want my work to spur reflection and spark change.

8. Tell us about Abisola, what other things do you do apart from filmmaking?
Besides filmmaking, I am also a certified project manager and a social entrepreneur. I’ve published three books and have been writing & creating content for over 5 years now. My first book is Travelling Out which explores stories of immigrants, a guide for new migrants.

Afterwards, I authored 365 Days Married and also Journey to Motherhood. As a social entrepreneur, I founded The Hatching Lady in 2017, a platform created to empower youths and women from the ages of 18-35 years old. Through it, we have hosted conferences, trainings, and charity outreaches in Nigeria & Canada. I am passionate about helping others tell their stories and I enjoy mentoring young people. I’m also a bit of a foodie, so when I’m not working on a film project, I like to try out the different cuisines in my community.

9. What are some things that make you happy?
Spending time with my family, connecting with fellow creatives, and seeing my work resonate with people. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing that your film has made a difference, no matter how small. Knowing I am also working in line with God’s perfect will makes me really happy. Also, I love good food and good movies!

10. What’s your style?
My style is rooted in authenticity and emotional depth. I try to create content that feels real and speaks to the human experience. I don’t like to shy away from difficult topics, but I aim to present them in a way that is engaging and relatable. I want the audience to feel something, whether it’s joy, sorrow, or reflection.

11. Any words for people reading this?
Never underestimate the power of your story. Every individual has something unique to offer. If you have a passion, don’t let anything stop you. Keep pushing forward, even when the challenges seem impossible. And remember, sometimes the hardest paths lead to the most beautiful destinations.

12. Would you like to give a shout-out to some people who contributed to the success of The Fadugbas?
Absolutely! To the best cast and crew that made this production happen in Canada, thank you so much for trusting me with your time and skills. Major shout out to Olutokun Emmanuel – our super fantastic DOP, Olowofela Johnson, the incredibly talented actor who played – Fadugba, Semilloore Atewelogun our super amazing Therapist, Tolu Adekunle and Fadekemi E.O.J our awesome camera crew members, Bolaji Opakunbi our editor.

Finally, I would like to appreciate my beautiful family, my mum, dad, sisters, brothers, my amazing husband and my son. The miracle of his birth is like air to my wings that keeps me dreaming and wanting me to live fully and do the things God has written about me.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, OkuSaga Adeoluwa takes us through his diverse career in entertainment—spanning art, reality TV, and films. He also discusses his role in the upcoming second season of “Anikulapo,” his ‘couple chronicles’ with Liquorose, and much more.

In our previous feature, we caught up with Shamz Garuba, who talked to his multifaceted career as a model and actor, how his modelling skills has helped his acting, his latest movie “A Night in 2005,” and moreIf you missed it, catch up here.

How would we describe Saga Adeoluwa? One word: multitalented. Saga first grabbed our attention on Big Brother Naija, and since then, he’s proven time and time again that there’s no stopping him.

Saga is living proof that being gifted in many areas isn’t a limitation—it’s a blessing. When he stepped into the entertainment world after Big Brother, those who knew him best kept urging him to focus on just one thing. But Saga couldn’t—and wouldn’t—abandon the other parts of himself. And aren’t we glad he didn’t? Imagine missing out on Saga the actor, who lit up screens in “The Men’s Club”, or the one we’re counting down to see in “Anikulapo.” What about Saga the hyperrealist artist, whose work speaks for itself? And let’s not forget the sides of him we’re yet to meet.

“I couldn’t just abandon the other parts of me. So, I decided to go for it all,” he told us. And go for it, he did!

In our chat with Saga, he opened up about his creative journey and what excites him most about acting. He talked about “The Men’s Club: The Next Generation,” his first Amazon Prime project (now streaming), and shared some practical advice on creativity and self-expression. He even revealed which directors he dreams of working with and so much more.

Oh, and here’s a fun fact—Saga wasn’t always in entertainment. He started out as an engineer with a regular 9-to-5. If there’s one thing his story teaches us, it’s that reinvention is always possible.

Dive into our lively conversation with Saga Adeoluwa below—you’re going to love it!

***

Hi Saga, it’s so great to have you here. How are you doing today?

Well, I’m doing okay. It’s been a very long day, you know, from set and everything—it’s just been crazy. I never really expected that being an actor would be so stressful, but I’m still grateful. It’s been a productive day. Thank you.

Let’s dive right in—your latest project, Anikulapo Season 2. We’re excited to see you join the cast! How does it feel to step into such a culturally rich and historical series?

When I got the message from Kunle Afolayan inviting me to be part of the project, I was overwhelmed with excitement—almost like a vein in my head popped, but in the best way possible. I was so thrilled that I called all my close friends and family members to share the news even before I returned his message or call.

It was easily one of the best moments of my year.

As for being part of such a culturally rich series, it’s incredibly fulfilling. If you’re familiar with me or my brand, you’d know how deeply connected I am to Yoruba culture. While I may not embody it in every way, I strive to express my Yoruba heritage through my dressing, my art, and the conversations I have. I’m passionate about promoting Yoruba culture to the best of my ability.

So, being part of this series was a truly proud moment for me, and I’m incredibly honoured to have been involved.

You’ve had such a diverse career in entertainment—art, reality TV, acting. When it comes to acting, what excites you the most compared to the other aspects of your creative journey?

At my core, I’m a performer, and acting is performance in its rawest form. I express myself with every limb, muscle, and emotion—my body is my paintbrush, and the screen is my canvas. That level of expression excites me.

I’ve taken on diverse roles, from an Igbo carpenter to a respected prince in Anikulapo, a broken-hearted husband, and a spoiled child. I love how acting allows me to explore such a wide range of characters. As a performer, the immediate reward of audience reaction—seeing people enjoy my work—is incredibly fulfilling. Unlike other art forms, the applause comes fast after a movie is released, and that connection with the audience is something I really enjoy.

Acting works for me because it feeds that need to perform and be seen.

Speaking of your journey, you’ve been in the public eye since your time on Big Brother Naija, and now you’re diving deeper into acting. How would you say your approach to fame and your craft has evolved since your BBNaija days?

Well, my journey has been quite interesting. First of all, I had no preparation for this. I was an engineer, working 9-5, mostly offshore. I was a well completions engineer—hands-on, ensuring wells were in place, working optimally, and free from safety issues.

Entertainment was never on my radar. I didn’t even watch much TV, and even now, I don’t know many people in the entertainment industry because I was never part of it. Entering Big Brother Naija was a bold move for me, and leaving the show felt like being thrown into deep waters. I’ve had to fight to stay afloat.

Over time, I’ve learned a lot about my brand, how people perceive me, and how to portray and carry myself. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of socialising within the industry and building connections. I’ve also come to value community, which includes my family, fan base, and supporters. Developing my skills has been a key focus, ensuring I always put my best foot forward. As a performer, you have to show up, deliver, and always come correct.

All these lessons became invaluable when I finally started acting last year. I needed these skills in my arsenal to be the best I can be, and they’ve made a significant difference in my journey so far.

If your life at this moment were a scene from a movie, which movie would it be? It could be one you’ve acted in or one you’ve watched.

This is an interesting question. I often tell people that, above all else, my life is about the pursuit of happiness. If my life were a scene from a movie, it would undoubtedly be The Pursuit of Happyness.

Like the protagonist, I’m just someone fighting to survive—fighting to find joy, to put food on the table, to make a name for myself, and to ensure my family’s happiness. That relentless fight is what defines me.

You’re constantly evolving, and it’s so inspiring. What advice would you give to young men looking to break into the entertainment industry, especially those who, like you, have multiple talents?

When I started out after Big Brother, I was still figuring things out. Everyone close to me knew about my many talents, but they kept telling me, “Focus on one thing.” I couldn’t do that—I couldn’t just abandon the other parts of me. So, I decided to go for it all.

The first piece of advice I’d give anyone is this: there’s really no formula for success. One person can succeed through method A, another through method B, and both can achieve different results that work for them. The most important thing is to believe in yourself and your dreams. Success doesn’t happen by chance. Everyone who has achieved something great started by having faith in themselves.

If you lose that belief, you won’t take the steps needed to reach your goals. You’ll miss out on opportunities because you didn’t position yourself in the right place. But when you believe in yourself, you’ll keep pushing, showing up, and eventually getting where you need to be.

So, my advice is simple: always believe in yourself.

Out of all the projects you’ve worked on so far, which one has been the most exciting for you?

The most exciting project I’ve worked on so far has to be Anikulapo. It’s the biggest platform I’ve ever been a part of, and the experience was incredible. Before that, I was on The Men’s Club, which was also a huge milestone for me at the time—it was the biggest project I had done up until then.

Earlier, I worked on Afrobeat Superstar, though it hasn’t been released yet. Still, out of everything, Anikulapo has been the most thrilling project for me. I honestly can’t wait for you all to see what I’ve been working on—it’s amazing, and I know it’s going to blow your mind. You’re going to love it!

With all your projects, you must stay busy. What’s your perfect way to unwind when you get some downtime?

Saying I’m busy is an understatement—my schedule even worries my father. My family is constantly concerned because I barely get any time to rest.

On my days off, I always prioritise going to the gym. Contrary to popular belief, working out isn’t stressful; it’s actually a way for me to unwind and heal. For me, the gym is a form of self-love. A typical day off starts with breakfast, followed by a gym session. Afterward, I head home, take a shower, and maybe watch a movie. Sometimes, I just sit quietly in the dark, reflect, and plan for the week ahead.

My downtime usually revolves around gym sessions, music, movies, and occasionally sketching or painting. While sketching and painting feel more like work than rest, they still serve as a creative outlet that helps me recharge.

If you could compare your next film to a dish, what dish would that be?

That would definitely be creamy pasta.

The film, The Men’s Club, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime on December 4. I’d call it creamy pasta with a lot of prawns, chicken, and different types of protein—not just prawns and chicken, but also hot dogs, sausages, and all that good stuff.

It’s very tasty, very creamy, very beautiful, and all of that.

You and Liquorose have become quite the dynamic duo with your ‘couple chronicles’ recreations of movie scenes. If you were introducing yourself to someone new, which one would you recommend they watch first?

Oh yes, Couple Chronicles—it’s definitely my most successful endeavour. I’m so proud of it, and I truly appreciate all the love and support it gets. It’s something I’m incredibly proud of, not just for myself but also for Liquorose. We work tirelessly to bring it to you every Sunday—it’s no easy feat!

If I were introducing Couple Chronicles to someone new, I’d definitely recommend starting with the Bridgerton episode. It’s such a beautiful and emotional piece, with the whole “Do you love me? I love you” vibe—it’s unforgettable. Another great one is the Yoruba episode where we’re hilariously cussing each other out—it’s one of our earliest and still a classic.

Then there’s the English-Nigerian episode, where she’s telling me to stop watching football and focus on her. The whole Arsenal and Barcelona analogy, scoring goals versus watching matches—it’s absolutely hilarious! And of course, the recreation of Idris Elba and Beyoncé—so powerful and unforgettable. Those are definitely my top four episodes!

If you could shoot your shot with any director you’d love to work with, who would it be? You never know, they might be reading this right now!

One director I really want to work with—I’ve worked with her before, but it was on a very minor role, and I would like something major—is Jade Osiberu. She’s phenomenal.

Also, BAP, Bolanle Austen-Peters, she’s amazing. I’ve worked with my dream director, Kunle Afolayan, and I’m very proud of myself for doing that.

Who else again? A lot of them. Let me not mention all, but the two—BAP and Jade Osiberu—are the ones I want to work with right away. So, please, give me a call.

So, what’s next for Saga? What should we be on the lookout for?

What’s next for me right now? Uh, I have a lot of YouTube projects coming out almost twice a month, right about that frequency. So please, you can go to YouTube and search my name, Sagas Movies, and you’ll see a handful that you can watch.

And I said, I have my first Amazon Prime project coming up in December—”The Men’s Club: The Next Generation.” It is so amazing, you’re gonna love it.

And then I did a film with Jade Osiberu—”Christmas in Lagos“—also out on Amazon Prime in December. You’re gonna love it as well.

Christmas is in the air, and so is the festive cheer from “Christmas In Lagos,” Jade Osiberu’s new movie, which premiered today on Prime Video. But can we talk about the stunning new photos of the cast that Jade just posted on her Instagram page? The answer is yes—absolutely yes! You know we love everything style and fabulous, so let’s dive in.

The photos are giving fine, they’re giving style, they’re giving traditional bridal chic, they’re giving owambe vibes, and they’re serving colour in all its glory. For this shoot, Jade herself stepped out from behind the camera to join the cast, and she understood the assignment. Dressed in a pink and green lace dress with cascading drapes and a matching pink gele, she looked every bit regal and befitting of her role as producer.

The cast, including Teniola Aladese, Shaffy Bello, Richard MofeDamijo, Angel Anosike, Rayxia Ojo, Shalom C. Obiago, Waje, Wale Ojo, Ladipoe, Tris Udeh, and Obinna Okenwa, stunned in coordinating pink and green outfits. Their looks were elevated with matching caps and gele, for that traditional elegance.

From Production Sets to the Emmys: Busola Komolafe’s Journey to Championing African Narratives https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/12/busola-komolafe-emmy-awards-academy-member/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 11:49:02 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1686987 Busola Komolafe believes African stories are compelling because they blend cultural richness with unique perspectives. “African stories offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before—whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions,” she explains.

Throughout her expansive career in media—spanning filmmaking, visual storytelling, and TV leadership—Busola Komolafe has consistently championed one mission: projecting authentic African stories to a global audience.

Not just any African stories, though. Busola is deeply committed to showcasing the rich, positive, and multifaceted narratives that highlight the continent’s beauty and complexity. She believes African stories are compelling because they blend cultural richness with unique perspectives. “African stories offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before—whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions,” she explains. “At the same time, these stories touch on universal themes like love, family, and ambition, which resonate across cultures. It’s this combination of specificity and universality that makes African storytelling so powerful.”

For decades, African storytelling in films has often been told by outsiders, perpetuating stereotypes and negative narratives. Studies reveal that many of these portrayals have used Africa and its people merely as resources to create distorted images that are far removed from the continent’s realities. But the tide is changing. With more Africans stepping forward to tell their own stories, a new era is emerging—one that dismantles stereotypes and amplifies the diversity and beauty of the African experience.

Busola is a key player in this movement. Beyond her work as a storyteller, she now holds a prestigious position as an Active Member of the Emmy Awards Television Academy. For Busola, this achievement is not just personal—it’s a win for every creative working tirelessly to amplify African voices. “This is validation of years of dedication to storytelling and creative work,” she says.

Despite her busy schedule, Busola graciously took the time to share her journey with us. She reflected on the moments that shaped her passion for storytelling and outlined her plans as a member of the Academy. These include highlighting the vibrancy and depth of Nollywood and advocating for the recognition of African storytelling within the global television landscape.

***

Hi Busola, it’s great to have you speak with us. How are you doing?

I’m doing great, thank you! It’s a busy but rewarding time, and I’m excited to be sharing this moment with you and your readers.

Congratulations on your selection as an Active Member of the Emmy Awards Television Academy. What was the first thought that crossed your mind when you got the news?

Thank you so much! The first thought that crossed my mind was sheer gratitude. It felt surreal, like a validation of the years of dedication to storytelling and creative work. I remember thinking, “Wow, this is a recognition not just for me but for the entire African creative community.”

This achievement is not only a personal milestone but a big moment for Nigerian and African creatives breaking into global spaces. How does it feel to represent such a vibrant creative community?

It’s an incredible honour and responsibility. Nigerian and African creatives bring such unique perspectives and energy to storytelling, and being in a position to advocate for that on a global stage feels like a privilege. It’s a testament to the richness of our cultures and the power of our narratives. This is not just my win it’s a win for every creative out there working tirelessly to tell our stories.

Your journey spans filmmaking and TV production, leading to this incredible opportunity with the Television Academy. Was there a defining moment that shaped your passion for storytelling?

Growing up without so many siblings, TV became my closest companion. In a quiet household where not so many kids running around, the presence of a TV set transformed my world. I remember the anticipation of waiting for the local TV station to come on at 4 p.m. The moment the screen lit up, the entire house came alive. It was magical, and even as a child, I could see how captivated my parents were by my fascination with TV content.

My mum nurtured this passion by buying me Bollywood/Hollywood films, and I would immerse myself completely in those stories. It sparked something profound in me, even as a little girl. I realised that I wanted to be part of the magic that TV brings, the kind of magic that fills a quiet living room with life and offers an escape for anyone watching. From that young age, I knew I wanted to create those moments, to be part of the world that gave others the joy and companionship TV gave me as a little girl.

As a TV executive, you’ve worked on impactful projects. Which one has challenged you creatively or stayed with you the most?

The project that challenged me the most and has stayed with me is my short film “Phantom.” It was my first foray into filmmaking after years of working primarily on reality shows. The story came to me, and I felt a deep need to tell it, even though it was a significant departure from the kinds of projects I had worked on before. It was also my first time directing a film, and I deliberately chose to tackle a complex, impactful narrative, a psychological thriller that delved into deep, thought-provoking themes. It wasn’t a “safe” or easy story for a debut.

I vividly remember how nervous I was the morning of the shoot. I prayed and committed the entire production to God, asking for guidance and for the Holy Spirit to take control. That day marked a creative leap for me, and though it was a challenge, it was a beautiful and rewarding one.

The effort paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined. “Phantom” went on to earn selections at seven international film festivals, received two prestigious nominations in New York and Los Angeles, and won multiple awards, including Best Short Film Nigeria at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival and Best African Film at the International World Film Awards. For a first attempt at filmmaking, it was both a personal and professional milestone.

“Phantom” didn’t just challenge me creatively; it shaped me into the award-winning filmmaker I am today. Looking back, I’m proud of the risks I took and grateful for the journey.

African stories are gaining global recognition like never before. What do you think makes our storytelling so compelling, and how can this momentum be sustained?

African stories are deeply compelling because they are rich in culture and unique in their perspectives. They offer narratives that many people around the world may never have encountered before whether it’s a glimpse into our cultural nuances or the exploration of our traditions. At the same time, these stories touch on universal themes like love, family, and ambition, which resonate across cultures. It’s this combination of specificity and universality that makes African storytelling so powerful.

To sustain this momentum, we need to focus on developing a strong industry structure. We have incredible talent, but for the industry to thrive long-term, we must build a system that supports consistent, high-quality output. This includes investing in training, funding, and infrastructure, as well as fostering partnerships that help us access global markets.

Now that you’re an Emmy voter, how do you plan to use your platform to champion diverse voices in television?

As an Emmy voter, my primary responsibility is to ensure that excellence and representation are recognised and celebrated. With my vote, I have the power to advocate for stories and creators that reflect the diversity of voices and perspectives in the television industry, including those from Africa and other underrepresented regions. My focus will be on honouring content that embodies exceptional storytelling and innovation, while also contributing to the broader recognition of diverse narratives in global television.

Beyond voting, how do you see your role in the Television Academy helping to amplify Nigerian and African stories to a global audience?

Being part of the Television Academy allows me to serve as a bridge, connecting global audiences to the richness of Nigerian and African stories. Through enlightenment and advocacy I can help highlight the vibrancy and depth of Nollywood, showcasing its cultural significance and creative impact. My role is to advocate for the recognition of African storytelling within the global television landscape, opening minds to the beauty and diversity of our narratives.

When you’re not working, which shows or creators do you enjoy watching? Do their stories influence your creative vision in any way?

Even though their stories have not influenced my creative vision, I admire the work of Biyi Bandele (may he rest in peace). His exceptional directing in the film, “Half of a Yellow Sun” left a good mark on Nigerian cinema. I also like the work of BB Sasore. I think he’s one of Nigeria’s brilliant storytellers, bringing depth and creativity to his projects. Abby Ajayi is also one great writer even though most of her works is in Hollywood.

Shonda Rhimes for her exceptional story world-building and how intricately she crafts her characters in her TV series. She creates layered, multifaceted characters that feel real.

What’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?

There’s so much more to come, and I’m truly excited about the journey ahead. This is such a pivotal time for African creatives. While I can’t reveal too much just yet, I’ll say this: watch this space. The future is bright, and I’m honoured to be part of this wave of African excellence.

There are young filmmakers reading this interview and thinking, “I’d like to be in a global space like this too.” What advice would you give to them as they work towards that dream?

The first thing I’d like to say is, there’s no such thing as an overnight success. What may appear as an overnight breakthrough often takes years of challenges, growth, being knocked down, rising up again, staying consistent, and staying true to your journey. It’s hard work, dedication, and perseverance over time that bring success.

So, my advice is to stay the course. Know exactly what your goals and purpose are. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” That “why” is what will drive you, keep you motivated during tough times, and remind you why you started.

Believe in your voice and the uniqueness of your perspective. Excellence should be your standard in everything you do. Don’t look for shortcuts or the easiest way to achieve your dreams. Instead, focus on the path that prioritises quality and authenticity. That’s what will make you stand out.

Finally, surround yourself with mentors and people who inspire and challenge you. Learn from their journeys, take advice, and build relationships that will help you grow. Remember, success is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, stay determined, and keep striving for greatness.

Last night’s premiere of Toyin Abraham’s “Alakada: Bad and Boujee” had the who’s who of the entertainment world stepping out in style their boujee best. The red carpet was a pastel dream, with each star embracing the “pastel paradise” theme in their own chic way.

The star of the night, Toyin Abraham, absolutely owned the carpet in a beautiful lemon-green-two-piece. The outfit shimmered with glittering stones along the neckline, sleeve hems, and trouser cuffs. And let’s talk about that oversized rose attached to her outfit – a gorgeous statement piece that cascaded all the way to the floor.

Meanwhile Ini Edo was all about the Owambe glam in a red sequined dress and gele that’s perfect for your Owambe style inspiration. Kiekie brought her usual fun vibe, adding just the right amount of playful energy to the evening, while Bimbo Ademoye kept things soft and glowing with her subtle yet striking beauty.

From Funke Akindele‘s Everybody Loves Jenifa to Mercy Aigbe‘s Thin Line, Femi Adebayo‘s Seven Doors, and Jade Osiberu‘s Christmas in Lagos, stars brought their fashion A-game, showcasing a dazzling array of styles and beauty looks that have left fans and fashion enthusiasts dissecting and celebrating these sartorial triumphs.

1. Everybody Loves Jenifa

First on the list is Funke Akindele’s SOMO dress, with golden and green embellishments; it was a modern couture masterpiece. Diamond jewellery added subtle elegance, while sleek hair, glowing makeup, and expert styling completed the breathtaking look, resulting in a fab red carpet moment!

Coincidentally, the same designer dressed Nollywood star, Omowunmi Dada in a similar mini dress, see below:

Likewise, men at the premiere showed up and showed out. Another twin style moment that caught our eye was the striking similarities between Falz and Akin Faminu‘s monochrome suits featuring silver embellishments.

2. Thin Line

With this premiere’s dress code being risqué and racy“, Uche Montana did not come to play. The stylista wore a sultry Weiz Dhurm Franklyn piece that was sure to turn heads and steal second glances.

Mimi Yina brought a textural twist to the premiere in her satin jacket and sheer cyan innerwear bringing a reimagined corporate risqué vibe to the event.

Mercy Aigbe, the woman of the moment, came exceptionally clad in a sin city theme. The star actress and producer showed up in a star-studded dress and captured hearts with her edgy yet sublime glam.

Three days ago, we brought you all the fabulous looks from the premiere of “Christmas in Lagos,” Jadesola Osiberu’s holiday movie that’s already on everyone’s December watchlist. From bold statements to elegant silhouettes, the stars embodied the ‘Lagos High Fashion’ theme in so many stylish ways.

But let’s pause for a moment—just a brief pause—and focus on one look that really had our attention: Teniola Aladese. The film’s leading lady showed out, turning the red carpet into her runway with a look that perfectly balanced tradition and contemporary style.

She rocked a custom Emmy Kasbit ensemble that features a tailored Ladun Akwete coat with a waistline cut out detail, matching akwete culottes and silk ombre shirt off the spring 24 collection. The entire outfit was a seamless combination of bold structure with effortless elegance, and we can’t stop thinking about it.

The accessories were equally on point, with colourful strappy heels that added just the right pop. Her sleek bun, with soft strands framing her face, gave the whole look a relaxed yet polished vibe.

Take a look at her look below and tell us—did she bring the fashion heat or what?

Do you remember the first time you saw Eucharia Anunobi on your TV screen? She had that rare ability to make you stop and watch, completely captivated. From her early days in the ‘90s, Eucharia quickly rose to become one of Nollywood’s most unforgettable stars. Whether she played a fierce gangster or a commanding powerhouse, her performances were impossible to ignore.

And let’s not forget her style. It wasn’t just her acting that kept us hooked; it was the flair she brought to every appearance. The dramatic jewellery, the perfectly arched eyebrows, the flawless wigs—she made being extra look effortlessly chic. Watching her, you couldn’t help but wonder: how did she make drama look so glamorous?

No matter the role, Eucharia brought a mix of elegance, sass, and intensity that demanded your attention. She could play the villain, the fighter, or the flawed human being with such heart and style that it’s no surprise she’s considered one of Nollywood’s greatest. Her ability to make you laugh, cry, or feel a little scared—all while looking like she belonged on a magazine cover—was unmatched.

Today, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to celebrate five of her most iconic roles that prove why she’s a Nollywood legend:

Abuja Connection

In “Abuja Connection,” Eucharia plays a no-nonsense gangster pimp caught in a power clash with Sharon Chukwuka. These two women are locked in an epic battle, and Eucharia’s character is the kind who takes no prisoners. Watching her is a masterclass in playing a powerful, ambitious woman with serious edge.

August Meeting

Who could forget “August Meeting,” one of Nollywood’s ultimate drama fests? This film is one of those classic Nollywood tales that mixes ambition with drama. Eucharia plays Lorlor Odoziaku Amaka, a fierce contender for the presidency of the Umuoriji women’s community. With the upcoming August meeting of the Umuoriji women, Amaka and Angela are in a fierce battle to win the votes of the members. The rivalry between these two escalates to the point of using supernatural tactics, and Eucharia brings all the tension, making you both love and fear her at the same time.

Born Again

In “Born Again,” Eucharia takes on the role of Blessing, a woman who pretends to be a “born-again” Christian hopes of landing a husband. But things get messy fast when she moves in with a church member’s family and starts an affair with her host’s husband. Eucharia’s portrayal is dramatic and intense, as she plays a woman who uses faith as a disguise to get what she wants, only to get caught in her own lies.

What Every Woman Wants

In “What Every Woman Wants,” we see Eucharia as Agatha, a career-driven woman whose ambition comes at the cost of her family life. The struggle between wanting to make it big and maintaining your personal relationships is something so many of us can relate to. Eucharia brings that relatable tension to life with depth and emotion that leaves you thinking.

Waste Collectors

And then there’s “Waste Collectors,” where Eucharia plays Sophia, a woman tangled up with a secret society and making money through dark means. Mysterious, sharp, and just a little dangerous, Sophia is a testament to Eucharia’s versatility.

How KC Obiajulu Became a Decorated Cinematographer in Today’s “Doing Life With…” https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/11/doing-life-with-kc-obiajulu/ Sat, 30 Nov 2024 11:00:39 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1684143 I decided I was going to make a living as a cinematographer. I was going to make a living out of that thing that embarrassed me.

Doing Life With… is a BellaNaija Features series that showcases how people live, work, travel, care for their families and… everything in between. We are documenting the lives of all people and ensuring everyone is well-represented at BN.

Did you miss our last conversation with Emmanuel Osahor? You can catch up here.

This week, we are featuring KC Obiajulu, a multi-talented Nigerian cinematographer known for his work on notable modern Nollywood films, including “Over The Bridge, which won him the 2024 AMVCA for Best Cinematography. Enjoy the conversation!

Hey KC Obiajulu, describe how you’re feeling in three words

Hey, BellaNaija. I would say anxious, excited and hopeful.

Great! What are you currently working on?

Right now, I’m in Okija, Anambra state. I’m working on a documentary called “Uruji.” I’m also doing post-production for “Something About the Briggs,” and “Man in the Mirror”. I’m planning a couple of commercials for December. There are two commercials on my desk and there’s a music video. So, yeah, I’m just working on a bunch of stuff.

You seem busy

I actually am.

What’s the best part of being a cinematographer?

The best part is that you get to shape how people perceive something. Most audiences are visually driven – what they see, how you block a scene, and how actors perform in front of the camera determine how they will react to certain things. Knowing that you are capable of doing that? It’s like having superpowers.

What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on?

It has to be “Rehearsal.” I love it. It’s a short film directed by Michael Omonua. It’s an amazing film and a turning point in my career. That was when I realised how important the power of storytelling with a camera is. And not just pointing the camera and shooting stuff, but actually understanding the story and knowing how to approach it visually and creating a visual language for a film. I think that is the most exciting project I’ve worked on.

Can you share a bit about your background?

I will start from my teenage years when I moved to Jos. I attended the University of Jos and later went to film school. My first inspiration came from my mother, who was a cinematographer and a journalist. Following in her footsteps, I began my career as a journalist before becoming a cinematographer. I grew up immersed in the world of entertainment, often watching my mother go to work. I even worked as her assistant for a while, which helped me gain valuable insights into the industry.

During this time, I met Sammy Adesuji, a colleague of my mother, who mentored me in journalism. Eventually, I went to film school to learn the theoretical aspects of filmmaking.

Is there any key moment from your journey that shaped you into what you are today?

Everything shaped me, but the moment I decided that I would be a cinematographer was when I was on “Blue Flames” set by Papel Apel, a filmmaker based in Abuja. The first day on the set, I spoiled the camera. I got fired. But I refused to leave. I stayed back and said to him, “I came here to learn and learning I will do.” For spoiling his camera, that wasn’t such a wise thing to do. But it turned out to be great. The likes of Bimbo Akintola and Keppy Ekpeyong begged on my behalf and I eventually stayed back. It was embarrassing but I finished the project. That day, I decided I was going to make a living as a cinematographer. I was going to make a living out of that thing that embarrassed me.

We admire that determination

Thank you.

So that was how your cinematography journey began

Yeah, pretty much that. It all began in Jos. After that embarrassing moment on Papel’s set, I went back to school and, as a final year student, I changed my major from directing and writing to cinematography. I started shooting all kinds of films. My classmates didn’t trust me enough to shoot certain things, so I had to force them to allow me. I performed horribly. I was shooting giant grains in broad daylight. The exposure was off. I was reflecting in the actors’ glasses. But I was just very enthusiastic about the whole thing, and I learned from that.

It made me want to do more. I interned as a second AC and then I became a first AC. That’s how I found my mentor, Kago Idebo, “Bishop,” as people know him. He mentored me for a few years and eventually, I moved to Lagos. He recommended me for a job where I worked on a project and I met Muhammad Atta who is an amazing guy and mentor. So I had Kago and Muhammad mentor me for about seven years. As a camera preacher, I was studying their work and the works of the likes of Wale Fista, whose work inspires me a lot.

When I transitioned from being the first AC to camera operating for these people, I became a cinematographer for them on certain projects. And that’s how I became the cinematographer that I am today.

How important is it for you to be part of the people pushing the industry forward?

Nollywood is evolving and growing, doing numbers locally and internationally. Everyone is doing what they can, doing what they know how to do the best way they know how to do it. We’re building this house, this industry, brick by brick. Everyone is bringing what they can bring to the table: cement, blocks, sand, water, anything you can bring. And I am doing my part the same way I can. The only thing that keeps me up at night is to do my work the best way possible. Give my best every time, show up. And not just show up, but show up 110% every time I have the opportunity. I think that will help build our industry. I know the skill set that I possess and I believe that it will help build the industry as well. So in any way possible to contribute to Nollywood’s evolution, I will do that the best way that I can with every knowledge that I have, with every skill set that I have.

What is the most challenging thing for you right now as a cinematographer?

The most challenging thing for me now as a cinema is finding projects that I like. Finding projects that I like that align with my timing. Finding projects that I like that align with the budget that is required for it to be done. Finding projects that I like that have people who are as enthusiastic as I am to make the project because sometimes, when people give you projects to work on, you realise that you, as someone who is hired on the project, are even more enthusiastic than they are.

There are so many projects out there to like. But there are other factors like: Do you have the right resources to do the projects? Do you have the right team to do the project? Would you work with the right people? Would you work with the people who see the vision the same way you see it? Is it the right timing? You know, some of these things.

How are you navigating the challenges?

I stopped focusing on what’s next for me to work on, but on how I can be better. When I’m not working, I’m reinvesting in myself. I’m learning new stuff, I’m learning new tricks and learning how to tell stories differently. I think if you get better at working and doing stuff, there’s always going to be something to work on. People will recognise that and the industry is not blind. They can see who is putting in the work. They can see who is putting in work with great results. They can see who’s putting in quality work.

Considering that you do both, is there a difference between directing the photography of a music video and a film?

There is a big difference. Working on music videos is very short-term and very easy to work on, compared to working on films. And with a music video, you can get away with a lot of stuff.  You need to know how to shoot pretty pictures, to be honest. It doesn’t apply to every music video, but most of it, yes. Especially from this side of the world, some music videos, they’ve got a lot of substance to them and require a lot of work.

But working on films requires a lot of focus. It requires that your attention span be long, which is something I struggle with. It requires that you be present at all times depending on how long you make that film. So you can shoot a scene on day one that ties to the scene that will be shot on day 30.

And you have to consider day 30 while shooting that scene on day one. And by the time you go back to day 30, you have to remember what happened on day one. It’s beyond just shooting pretty pictures. It is more about how you tell a compelling story. You can keep people in their seats and keep people glued to the screen for however long that film is. And you have to be there thinking about it, the whole process, the entire way. You have to practically do that even before you go on set.  And when you get on set, you have to remember all the plans you made. It’s hard. It’s hard.

So music video and film? They are two separate worlds. Weirdly, I’ve been able to navigate both, which is quite interesting. I hope that with time we have more DPs who can jump between both worlds.

What’s a typical day in your life?

When I’m not working, I usually stay at home in bed. I tend to wake up late on my days off—around 9 a.m.—because I wake up early for work every day that I have to go to set. After getting out of bed, which can be around 10 or 11 a.m., I follow my morning routine: I eat, shower, and spend some time on my iPad doing a bit of time accounting. Not money accounting but assessing how I’ve spent my time and what needs to be done. I also like to play little video games and make phone calls.

Honestly, I prefer to stay home on my off days. I enjoy spending time alone because I spend so much time talking to people on set, and it can be exhausting. Being at home allows me to unwind and not be bothered by anyone. Sometimes, I even turn off my phone.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, Shamz Garuba takes us through his multifaceted career as a model and actor, how his modelling skills has helped his acting, his latest movie “A Night in 2005,” and more.

In our previous feature, we caught up with Segilola Ogidan, who talked to us through her inspiring career journey, from her directorial debut to her AMVCA nomination, and more. If you missed it, catch up here.

Every now and then, we get to have some Nollywood stars indulge us by answeing some questions about their journey and experience in the second-largest film industry in the world. (Hey, we’re not bragging—that’s the fact, and we’re just happy to share).

This industry is teeming with incredible talent, and one of its stars is Shamz Garuba. Of course, you know him.

A quick scroll through Shamz’s Instagram might make you pause—actor or model? His bio says actor, but his effortless poses, sharp angles, and appearances on the runway hint at his versatility. Oh wait, is that him in a men’s fashion lookbook? And there he is in a fragrance commercial! Do you know he also writes music and even sings? It’s giving multi-talented.

Shamz started his professional modeling career in 2016, and he credits his mother for spotting his potential two years earlier. In 2014, she encouraged him to explore modeling and even made inquiries to help him get started.

Mums really do know best, don’t they?

In our conversation with Shamz—which, trust us, was as interesting as it gets—he talked about his modelling career,  his journey into Nollywood, his latest film “A Night in 2005,” his growth as an actor, and much more.

When we asked him to compare his upcoming film to a dish, Shamz described it as “classy” with a “rich, suave tech director” character at its core. His pick is mashed potatoes and creamy garlic chicken. (We’re totally sold—and now eagerly waiting for his next release)

Dive into our chat with Shamz below:

***

Hi Shamz, it’s great to have you here. How are you doing today?

Hey BN, thanks for having me. I feel great today actually. I am grateful to be able to see another day and go out there and do my best.

Let’s jump right in—your latest project, “A Night in 2005,” where you play young Ope, how was that experience for you?

“A Night in 2005” is definitely one for the books and playing young Ope was fascinating and also challenging. But hey, I love a good challenge. The beautiful aspect about the project was the bonds that were formed. I met people on the set that I cherish and love now. It was a safe space to perform and exist. Shout out to Ted Abudu for such an important story that needed to be told.

You’ve played some really different roles—from Rabiu in “Crime & Justice Lagos” to Tokan in “Dear Diane”—and now you’ve made your cinema debut with “A Night in 2005”. Have you seen yourself grow as an actor through these roles?

Hmmmm actually very different roles and I love that. For me, every project served as a master class in acting since I learnt from each one and used it to get ready for the next. I have undoubtedly grown as an actor. The director of Crime and Justice Lagos, Onyinye taught me how to live in the moment, listen and connect with my environment. She held my hand all through the process and It felt like acting school. On dear Diane’s set I was surrounded with talent, from Detola to Riyo to the great Patrick Diabuah and to the very talented Toluwa Wumi, I definitely learnt a thing or two. Experience is really the best teacher and I try to immerse myself and be very present when I’m on a project.

We can’t skip over the modelling part. When did you first realise this was something you wanted to do?

People always get shocked when I say my mum was the one that actually thought I looked like a model and made enquiries on how I could start modelling in 2014. But once I started I was drawn to it and I started growing from there and started professionally in 2016.

How has your modeling career influenced your acting? Do you find that one helps the other when you’re on set?

My modelling career has greatly influenced my acting because I don’t think I would be an actor at all if I hadn’t started modelling. The reason is that I always wanted to be an actor but I watched how confident and outspoken actors were and I grew up very introverted, I still am lol. But modelling taught me how to be confident, how to handle rejections, how to talk to people, how to be presentable and how to properly brand myself as a talent. The things I know now as a model and the relationship built as a model has greatly affected my trajectory as an actor.

Besides acting and modelling, what other talents do you have? What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Asides modelling and acting. I’m very technical. I graduated from the university of Ilorin where I majored in Civil Engineering and I practiced for a while post graduation. Regarding talents, creative work comes naturally to me. I tend to come up with great creative ideas for film, ads and other things. I write music and sing as well and I featured in a TV show coming out next year that the world will get to experience that side of me. As an actor I love that I get to showcase these talents through storytelling. Cheers to unveiling talents we don’t know we have yet.

When you’re not working—whether that’s on the runway, shooting an ad, or filming—what would we most likely find Shamz doing in his downtime?

In my downtime I am mostly just chilling. Either I am catching up with films and shows I’ve planned to see or I’m playing tennis or I’m having a good swim. I also try to put down ideas for films I would love to make. Hopefully, I get to make them.

If you could compare your next film to a dish, what dish would it be?

My next film is very classy and my character is a rich and suave tech director. So, I’ll say Mashed Potatoes and Creamy garlic chicken lol.

Let’s say someone only knows you as a model but now wants to get to know you as an actor. Which of your roles would you point them to first?

I’ll definitely point them to Dear Diane first because that is widely available and it shows my character going through a plethora of emotions. So guys, Dear Diane is still showing on RussetTv on YouTube. It’s a show that will mess with your mental health in a good way.

If you could work with any director in Nigeria, who would you love to collaborate with next? We’re sure they’d love to hear it

I’ll love to work with any director that will challenge me to be a better actor and ispassionate for great and quality work. I’ll definitely love to work with BB Sasore, Jade Osiberu, Yinka Edwards again, Blessing Uzi and lots of amazing directors. Recently I got to follow Ifeoma Chukwuogo’s work and she’s amazing. Shout out to filmmakers that ensure stories are being told and executed excellently.

So, what’s next for Shamz Garuba? What exciting projects should we be on the lookout for

I was opportune to work on a couple of amazing projects this year. So definitely, next year a lot of film projects that I’m in would be out. We should be on the look out for “Afrobeats Superstar,” “Red Circle,” “Olufemi,” “Black Game” and a couple of projects that has not been announced yet.

Thanks a lot for having me BN, chat with you soon ❤

The Smart Money Woman season 2 debuted earlier this month to a wave of excitement—and it’s safe to say, it didn’t disappoint. While fans of the best-selling book and the previous season eagerly tuned in, the show proved it has a magnetic appeal that extends far beyond the book’s loyal readers.

One standout feature of the show? The sheer style on display. Not only did the series bring much-needed escapism (and humor!) to its audience, but the wardrobe? Utterly swoon-worthy. The best part? 90% of the pieces were from Nigerian designers, showcasing the vibrant creativity of the Nigerian fashion scene across all ten episodes.

Below, feast your eyes on exclusive imagery from the show, with a style recap from episode 1. Whether you’re in the mood for sumptuously costumed, binge-worthy TV or just looking for inspiration to elevate your wardrobe, this one’s for you, Bellastylistas!

Nollywood stars brought the heat to the red carpet last night at the premiere of “Suspicion,” held at IMAX Cinema, Lekki. With a dress code like “Flamboyantly Gidi,” it was no surprise that culture, creativity, and style were on full display.

Akin Faminu embodied Yoruba royalty in a black and green agbada, complete with a staff that added an extra touch of majesty. Stan Nze also brought his A-game in a traditional outfit styled by Am Diddy. Like Akin, he paired his look with a staff, exuding confidence and power.

Omowunmi Dada was a stunner in a custom black jumpsuit by Nkadumeje. The outfit featured a dramatic golden sleeve that cascaded all the way to the floor, giving her a bold and chic presence. Her African-inspired hairstyle tied the look together perfectly.

Ify Mogekwu of Ify’s Kitchen served regal vibes in a three-piece outfit in different shades of brown. Topping it off with a hat and a walking stick, she looked every bit like a modern-day queen.

The star-studded event was packed with Nollywood favourites, including Uzor Arukwe, Kalu Ikeagwu, Ill Bliss, Blessing Jessica Obasi, Akah Nnani, Boma Akpore, Tony Akposheri, Esegine Orezi Allen, Yemi Cregx, and Shaun Okojie.

Directed by Tosin Igho, “Suspicion” follows Voke, played by Stan Nze, a man who, after the tragic murder of his goddaughter, gains ancient juju powers and embarks on a quest for justice. His journey isn’t just a tale of vengeance but an exploration of the moral complexities that accompany supernatural power, as Voke navigates a world influenced by black magic.

The movie’s cast includes Stan Nze, Omowunmi Dada, Uzor Arukwe, Kalu Ikeagwu, Richard Mofe-Damijo (who also serves as an executive producer), and many more.

We always love when our Nollywood stars team up with their Ghanaian colleagues, and “Two of a Kind” brings that collaboration to life in a powerful way. Led by the Rita Dominic, this film dives into a moving story of love, loss, and healing, promising an emotional ride from start to finish. Stan Nze, Uzor Arukwe, and Omowunmi Dada lead the cast of “Suspicion,” a new thriller from director Tosin Igho. Premiering worldwide on 28 November as a Prime Video Original, “Suspicion” explores the depths of African mysticism, weaving together age-old traditions and modern moral dilemmas.

The story follows Voke, played by Stan Nze, a man who, after the tragic murder of his goddaughter, gains ancient juju powers and embarks on a quest for justice. His journey isn’t just a tale of vengeance but an exploration of the moral complexities that accompany supernatural power, as Voke navigates a world influenced by black magic.

Tosin’s vision for the film marries thrilling spectacle with moral introspection. “African powers aren’t just about spectacle, they’re deeply rooted in moral responsibilities and consequences,” he explains. “Traditional African magic has always been about balance. When you dish out vengeance, you must be prepared to taste its bitterness yourself.”

Stan Nze describes “Suspicion” as more than a supernatural revenge thriller: “It’s an exploration of justice through an African lens. This film challenges us to confront the moral costs of power and journeys into the soul of Nigerian culture, seeing justice, vengeance, and tradition clash in complex and unexpected ways. Audiences will have a new perspective of African mysticism rarely explored on this scale.”

Joining Stan Nze, Uzor Arukwe, and Omowunmi Dada are Kalu Ikeagwu, Shaffy Bello, Tina Mba, Ashafa ‘Small Mummy’ Salamot, Francis Sule, Boma Akpore, Tony Akposheri, Esegine Orezi Allen, and Richard Mofe-Damijo, who also serves as an executive producer.

When Nollywood comes to your mind, the spotlight, often times, is usually on its star-studded actors, but not today, we are switching things up and talking about the real game changers—the directors who craft the magic behind the scenes. These talented filmmakers bring out the best in actors, thereby transforming scripts into powerful stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Let’s take a look at some of Nollywood’s most brilliant minds who are shaping the industry one film at a time.

Kunle Afolayan

Safe to call him the culture keeper, Kunle is known for taking us on journeys that blend history, culture, and gripping storytelling. From the haunting “The Figurine” to the historical thriller “Anikulapo” and the suspenseful October 1, his films stick with you. He’s also given us the quirky fun of “Phone Swap” and the high-stakes.

Jade Osiberu

With her movies, Jade Osiberu sure knows how keep things fresh. Her debut film “Isoken” was a breath of fresh air, exploring love and societal pressure. While “Gangs of Lagos” brought us gritty, street-level storytelling like we hadn’t seen before.

Kemi Adetiba

Kemi Adetiba did a thing with “The Wedding Party,” a film that’s still a fan favourite to this day. However, with “King of Boys,” she took things to a whole new level, giving us a gripping story of power, ambition, and survival that kept everyone talking. The follow-up, “King of Boys: The Return of the King,” proved Kemi means business, pushing boundaries and showing just how intense and layered Nollywood stories can be.

Kayode Kasum

Kayode has a talent for evoking strong emotions. “This Lady Called Life” is a beautiful, emotional film about dreams and resilience. Then there’s “Sugar Rush,” a fun heist film with plenty of laughs. With each project, from dramas to comedies like “Ajosepo,” Kayode shows he’s got range.

Funke Akindele

If there’s one thing actors do not fail to mention, it is how Funke Akindele brings out the best of them on set. Funke Akindele is not just a face on the screen; she’s a creative force behind the camera. Her film “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” broke records and brought all the laughs. She’s also given us “Your Excellency,” a political satire with her signature comic twist, and “A Tribe Called Judah,” proving she’s made for this.

Tope Oshin

Tope is a skilled storyteller with a knack for creating heartfelt stories and compelling drama. From “New Money” to “Up North,” she knows how to blend romance, humour, and real-life issues. She’s also a talented television director, having worked on popular shows like “Tinsel”.

Mildred Okwo

Mildred has a knack for combining wit with drama. “The Meeting” epitomises her storytelling, combining humour with a look at ordinary issues. Her other films “Suru L’ere”, “La Femme Anjola” and 30 Days show she is not afraid to take major films.

Niyi Akinmolayan

With his latest film, “Lisabi: The Uprising,” Niyi brings history to life on the screen, showcasing his skill in telling powerful stories. From the laugh-out-loud moments in “Chief Daddy” to the suspenseful twists of “The Set Up,” he’s proven time and again that he knows how to keep audiences entertained and engaged.

Abba Makama

Abba isn’t your typical director, and that’s what makes him interesting. “Green White Green” is a funny, satirical take on Nigerian youth, while “The Lost Okoroshi” explores folklore with a modern twist.

Moses Inwang

Moses  is the kind of director who takes risks. He’s tackled everything from political thrillers like “Alter Ego” to the psychological thriller “Blood Vessel.” Some of his other notable works include “Lockdown,” “Bad Comments” and others.
